For future folklore/evermore reactions—she first said this was fictional and she did create characters, but there are LOTS of songs on both albums that are very much not fiction (my tears ricochet, invisible string, epiphany, peace, and long story short, to name a few) and she has spoken about how all the songs do relate to her personal experiences and emotions. “Fictional” is very loose IMO! I think a lot of songs have layers, the story may not be exactly hers but the feeling behind is what’s real. While I do think champagne problems is a story, in hindsight now it does make fans wonder how she was really feeling during that time.

I’m suspicious this is low-key about Taylor Lautner. There was rumor way back when they were dating that the reason it ended was because he proposed to her & she turned him down cuz she was so young & still pursuing her career. “Back to December” is confirmed about him… but I suspect Champagne Problems might be too, given the references in the bridge: November, college dorms, flannel, it being over by Christmas. Midas touch on the Chevy door: Midas was a king whose touch would turn everything to gold. He was a gentleman opening the Chevy door for her, making the humble vehicle, and her, feel like gold. This dorm was once a madhouse, I made a joke “well it’s made for me”: Some college dorms used to be mental hospitals back in the day… she’s joking that its “made for her” cuz she’s crazy ;) How evergreen our group of friends, don’t think we’ll say that word again: Evergreen are trees that don’t die off in fall, they stay green all year (like Christmas trees 😉). I think champagne problems represents the fact of "what do we do with this unopened bottle of champagne now" aka, you can't open it since she said no and now everyone is standing around, not celebrating. Yes! Midas was a king who turned everything he touched to gold. The subject of the song can make his Chevy seem more luxurious just with his touch. Her flushed cheeks (turned red or pink from the November cold) could be cured from his giving her his flannel jacket. And I agree with genius on ‘our’ being the word they can’t say anymore because they don’t share anything anymore, including their friends who had always been there. The interpretation I heard of crest fallen on the landing is how sometimes a family name is referred to as the family ‘crest’ and since she denied him it fell on the landing (possibly where they were standing) since she isn’t taking his name.. So at the end when she is talking about the new person that will fix all the issues she caused, she says that person will take his last name AKA the family ‘crest’.

The way I interpret the beginning of the song where she goes “you booked the night train for a reason so you could sit there in this hurt” but then says “bustling crowds or silent sleepers, you’re not sure which is worse”…. Imagine you just begged someone on your knees to marry you and she ghosted you without a reason, shattering your glass heart, and you thought being alone “in this hurt” was the right choice but you’re obviously not totally thinking clearly. Then as you’re wide awake surrounded by everyone asleep (there are some trains that cost more $$ but you can book a sleeper car with beds overnight) you end up wondering if it’s actually worse to be alone with your thoughts at night after what just happened than around a bunch of “bustling” daytime people going about their lives as normal when yours isn’t anymore. Second guessing your “reason” for the night train and wondering if maybe the crowds and the noise would have helped distract you from how damn broken you feel. Like which is the lesser of two evils? Or is there even one? Either way you’re alone. Hope I’m making sense, it’s 2:30am and I’m still crying along with y’all. 🤣💜

It’s a paradox. Just like they were supposed to last forever, the “don’t think we’ll say that word again” means that their friend group isn’t going to last forever either, even though it was supposed to. And then, “the hometown skeptics called it champagne problems” ties in with the line “she would’ve made such a lovely bride, what a shame she’s fucked in the head, they said.” The people who didn’t think they’d make it in the first place are like “yeah, what’s the big deal.” And then they’re like “she must’ve been CRAZY not to marry him.” It’s this idea that everyone from the outside was constantly judging their relationship. They were damned if they do, damned if they don’t. And of course, “what a shame she’s fucked in the head” is our second clue that she struggled with mental illness. Which is why “and I couldn’t give a reason” and “1 for the money (he had money, you must be ‘crazy’ not to marry him), 2 for the show (because everyone’s watching) I never was ready, so I watch you go” make sense. There are so many references to mental health being the cause of this, which was a huge theme at the beginning of the pandemic. Busting crowds or silent sleepers, you’re not sure which is worse - she just broke his heart and he doesn’t know if it’s better to be surrounded by people, or by himself in a “sleeper car” (which is a phrase for a train car where people can sleep). Crestfallen, the literal origin/definition of the phrase, is actually: “late 16th century: originally with reference to a mammal or bird having a fallen or drooping crest.” So the “crest” of your head is basically the crown of your head. It’s when a horse or bird lies its head on its chest. Basically your head has fallen down (so you’re looking down at the ground) out of sadness and disappointment. But everything else, the overall meaning and theme and tone of the song, y’all got perfectly. PLEASE do not be worried about your videos being long. We don’t mind at all and actually prefer it. Also, don’t be afraid to get on Genius and read through it for a minute until you understand. We do not mind waiting patiently for y’all to realize what’s going on, so that way it hits harder. I think I can finally speak for the two of you when you say, you understand why Taylor is as huge as she is and why she has such a loyal following. Go look at the chat. Look at the community of kindness that she’s created. Look at the way her songs and lyrics move people. Listen to how talented she is vocally and musically with the guitar and piano. The live version of this at The Eras Tour is out of this world good. Also (again lol), Taylor has said that Folklore and Evermore (her sister albums, as she calls them), are mostly concept albums where she’s created fictional characters and stories. BUT, we know for a fact that isn’t completely true with songs like Invisible String that directly reference her life. I think her and Joe were going through some stuff for a long time before they broke up (March of 2023, literally RIGHT when The Eras Tour started). And I think they wanted to keep it quiet (because he ALSO struggles with his mental health - like extremely - his social anxiety is so bad that he never even walked a red carpet with her), so she made people believe these had no connection to her life. But the way Taylor writes, the way almost everyone writes.. even if it’s fictional, it still somehow ties into the past or current circumstances of your life, because you write what you know. Since they have broken up and she’s moved on and is happy now, a lot is coming to light as far as the truth behind a lot of these songs - even if they were fictional characters, she may have been using them to act out her life. There’s also a ton of lore surrounding a picture Jack Antonoff posted on his story (?) on instagram about the day she wrote/recorded this song. I’ll let you guys look into that. So all in all, we don’t know what the truth is behind it, but this is such a deeply personal and intimate song, I don’t believe for one second that those emotions could be completely faked. Lastly - during her performance of this song at The Eras Tour, she SPECIFICALLY said that when she wrote it, she couldn’t imagine how cathartic it would be to sing Champagne Problems in a stadium full of people. That means it really does mean something to her. Alright, love you guys. Make sure you get some rest. Thank you both for being so kind and wonderful and dedicated ❤️

Ok, y’all. I’m sorry but I don’t completely accept that CP is completely fictional. Although it’s true that much of Folklore and Evermore are, we know for a fact that at least a couple of the songs are not fictional, ie. TLGAD and Tolerate It to name a couple. And I kept telling my daughter that her and Joe broke up (and got back together a couple times) and she didn’t believe me. But I was proven right when we found out You’re Losing Me was written (Dec 2021) plus listening to most of Midnights. That all being said, I have always believed that CP is a story about Joe actually proposing but her turning him down due to all the same issues that we now know were true during their relationship. Seriously, you have got to watch a livestream or go to the concert! Remember, she released Lover in 2019 and had to cancel her 2020 tour. She released BOTH folklore and evergreen as surprise albums during the first year of the pandemic. Who does that?!? You really should also watch the Folklore: The Long Pond Sessions to understand that Taylor took the opportunity to write something REALLY different from her other albums. They are both my absolute favorites! On top of that she released Midnights in 2022, started touring in 2023 and wrote TTPD right after releasing Midnights. She is a powerhouse! Some of her best work. During the ERAS tour she performed Lover, folklore, evergreen, Midnights and TTPD for the first time live!!! 🤯🤯🤯

Yep. Exactly as you thought. Taylor is sitting at the folklore/evermore piano covered with moss in the woods when she sings this. Spotlight on her. Beautiful moment in the show. She always receives a standing ovation after this amazing masterpiece. The longest ovation I think was 12 minutes at SoHo in California. I wore a Champagne Problems tank top with a 2019 AMA blouse and mirrorball earrings and light up mirrorball necklace at #theerastourseattle last year. My absolute favorite of hers and the best she has ever written!

I always interpreted the phrasing “champagne problems” as a bit tongue in cheek/satire because no matter what she/rich people go through emotionally there is a tendency for the public to have the attitude of “why are you complaining about anything, you’re rich. Oh boo hoo you have commitment issues” as if that makes her exempt from heartbreak . It’s one of those “I don’t know why I can’t commit and I’m sorry for that” and the rumor mill being like “ugh who cares we knew, she was fucked up and dramatic with those first world problems”. Not written as being true to life as some of her songs but I genuinely think Taylor Alison Swift is incapable of writing something that isn’t directly relevant to her own life, so there are probably shadows of truth to it. It feels like a nice precursor to TTPD too where she’s starting to talk about the media and public attitude towards her and how it affects her.

To me, this means that it's hard to know which is worse-- feeling sad and lonely in a crowd of people or feeling that way when you're actually alone and don't have anything to distract you. He chose to be alone so that he could wallow (sit there in this hurt)

She has told us over and over that he tolerated her and she constantly apologized for being too much (emotional and dramatic) for him. I know they wrote this together and I know they loved sad songs, but this seems like an autobiographical twist in that he WONT propose because she has too many champagne problems.

Idk what I did, but i posted prematurely hahahaha about “ Your Midas touch on the Chevy door // November flush and your flannel cure”, I understand it’s him “turning things into gold” as an analogy to the way he treats her, opening the car dor for exemple. And the “November flush” to me is how you get flushed from the cold wind hitting your face as the winter approaches, but he gives her his flannel jacket to warm. So I am a bit older and a lot of these things that are referenced in her songs are very familiar to me. We lose a lot of old analogy meanings as the years go by and current slang kind of overtakes it. (ie: Evergreens stay the same, they never change through the seasons. It not just a color or just a tree, it's symbolic) Taylor is obviously well read, the more you get into books and write, these vocabulary nuances she uses are found mostly in older literature. Book Authors usually stay away from slang, because it can change so much over time, they also use many different words to mean the same thing so one word is not repeating throughout the story . She is quite masterful with her word play. I have seen quite a few reactions to her, and they all have one thing in common. Someone is always grabbing a dictionary :)

I see it as like… Taylor’s getting really into this song and the memories it brings, and the emotions she felt at the time. And then with the piano riff, she’s pulling herself out of it and is kind of saying “…yep! So that’s that song.” Yknow what I mean? "november flush and your flannel cure"- i saw someone say this line meant she was cold and he gave her his flannel shirt to keep her warm "'this dorm was once a madhouse. i made a joke, 'well it's made for me'" - pointing to her struggle with mental health (i.e. "fucked in the head") "how evergreen, our group of friends, don't think we'll say that word again" - they had a solid group of friends, i'm assuming most of their friends were mutual. they're no longer together so they won't say "our" anymore "and soon they'll have the nerve to deck the halls that we once walked through" - people will go on with their lives, as if nothing happened. their space will be turned into someone else's. "one for the money, two for the show" is the first half of an expression used to count down. the whole thing is one for the money, two for the show, three to make ready, and four to go. (hence "i never was ready, so i'll watch you go") "sometimes you just don't know the answer, till someone's on their knees and asks you" - you can't say for sure if you would say yes to a proposal until you're in that moment of being proposed to "'she would've made such a lovely bride, what a shame she's fucked in the head', they said" - people shaming her for her mental health/decision to say no. everything seemingly pointed to her accepting the proposal but she didn't. "but you'll find the real thing instead. she'll patch up your tapestry that i shred" - the guy will eventually find a girl who says yes, and she will heal the hurt the narrator caused.
