We’re 18 minutes in and it seems like we’re in for Champagne Problems. But I would much rather have the love triangle (aka Betty X August x Cardigan) and on that note, I think we should break this down as well. Taylor and the Swifties call these three songs “the teenage love triangle” because they are all connected to each other. In my opinion the listening order should be Cardigan first, then August and Betty last. Cardigan is a song from Betty’s perspective many years in the future, reminiscing on the events of when she was a teenager and how that made her feel and how the guy made her feel then and now. Taylor says she thinks he broke her heart, really put her through it, but that in the end they stay together and so on Cardigan, that would mean she already forgave him. Then we have August, about a girl (we named her Augustine) who spent her summer with this guy, and basically fell in love with him, but he had a girlfriend, so it was just a summer thing, for him. Not for her, she wanted more but couldn’t have it. And lastly, Betty. This one is from the perspective of the boy, his name is James (that’s the name of Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds’s oldest daughter, Betty and Inez are also mentioned in the lyrics and they are all their children, because they are friends with Taylor). Basically this is James admitting to having cheated on Betty with Augustine during the summer and coming back to school to basically try to win her back and saying he was an idiot. These stories are all fictional and have no link to real life apart from the characters names, because on the Folklore and Evermore albums, Taylor tried to write more about stories than her actual life.

The trilogy is good but I'm honestly not sure it will make great reaction material. Sonically they're all quite similar and laid back, and while the story is strong it's not shocking or anything. It also requires a lot of interconnectedness that I don't know is obvious on a first listen.

Betty is the perspective of James, who realizes that Betty is the one he wants and is asking for forgiveness for leaving her for a summer fling with Augustine.
