Taylor talked about The Chicks (used to be The Dixie Chicks) in Ms Americana and how when they were cancelled due to speaking out against the war all artists were told basically to shut up and sing. When The Chicks made their comeback, they titled their documentary Shut Up and Sing.

Also, you should watch the Grammy performance of Fast Car with Tracy Chapman and Luke Combs. He released a cover of Fast Car which went to #1 on the charts. He always gave Tracy credit and was very respectful of her. She always hated the spotlight and all of the media attention and rarely made tv appearances and was something of a recluse and so her coming back and singing with him was a huge deal. With his cover making the #1 spot, she became the first black woman to have a #1 country song, as she has the songwriting credit for Fast Car.

Y’allllllll. Dixie Chicks are the S&@T! One of the three singers is the one playing the fiddle like a symphony! Someone else mentioned this but they were cancelled bc of something they said at one of their concerts and wrote the song “I’m Not Ready To Make Nice” about the hatred they experienced. Please, please listen to more The Chicks! Their whole 1st album “Wide Open Spaces” (w/Natalie) is magnificent (everyone loves “Goodbye Earl”) . I saw them on their first tour in very late ‘90’s & watching them all play and sing at the same time with those harmonies is epic. 🙌🙌🥰 Then (look up “The Chicks & George W. Bush”) for how they got deplatformed by country radio & such but they stood their (did nothing wrong) ground! They changed their name & released “Not Ready to Make Nice” later, which (with the backstory) is an absolute rock/country anthem! One of my favorite songs ever.

Watch the video of her singing it with Luke Combs. (He did a cover of it, she let him) and they performed it at the 2024 grammys. It was AMAZING!!! Tracy was stunned so many people were so into it.
