Riley, Milo, and Alice festively discuss some Christmas presents granted by the news, including the arrest of the dread pirate Bankman Fried and Elon Musk posting himself into penury. Also, Dom Leusder joins Riley in the second half to talk about the concept of “polycrisis” that appears to now be inescapable, to attempt a more firm definition of a nebulous, but useful, concept.

My calendar is all messed up now, Riley from the past said a second Riley from the future would appear at the end and I immediately marked my calendar LIKE A FOOL and where is the captain?

On Streeting, Wes is my MP and I've been banging the drum about the current Labour party's hostility to unions for years now at CLP, ever since Reeves first speech as Shadow Chancellor. I've been told more than once that "of course Labour supports unions" and been borderline called a conspiracist by the CLP chair. And yet here we fucking are.

I don't think the U.S. could make the troop thing work beyond a month or three, and that military is vastly larger and better funded than what's on offer in Albion. (To say nothing of JSOC units having, shall we say, experience in the shipment of agricultural products.) Mental as mental can be thinking.

In 2006 Achille Mbembe, Cameroonian philosopher and academic, expounded on the cascading effects of postcolonial political and social conditions as a series of overlapping and interlocking crises in his book On the Postcolony. He made note at the time that he didn't see this as Africa becoming regressive, but rather a window into the future of the world as postcolonial politics leaked back into the metropoles. Fun to think about, given how things are going.

As an older OK GO song said : "It's a disaster. It's an incredible mess. But it's all we got now, yeah, it's all we got. " Moral of the story is : it's bad, but don't worry. It's gonna get worse. You thought the roller-coaster couldn't drop steeper. And now it's spinning as well.
