they didn't introduce spores in the show until now cuz logistically it was too hard to work around, but theoretically they always existed. they just grow in dark, damp, sealed off places which is why they thrived in the basement. the bodies there were the soldiers sent down (including that one woman's son), but they're not attacking cuz the fungal growth has essentially cased them in. plus, i can only assume that the cordyceps wouldn't waste the energy to physically attack anyone when they're constantly breathing out spores that should have anyone dead in minutes

"she wouldn't" unfortunately she would 😀😀😀 this is where we start realizing that maybe ellie and abby aren't that different after all and 100% backing ellie becomes harder no matter how much you want to

To answer your question about the bodies on B2… you’re right that they look recent, the second body they showed was L. Park, aka Leon. The fact that they are what they are and the walls are covered in Cordyceps may have something to do with the Ground Zero status mentioned in the cold open… and bear in mind there are 3 basement levels, not just 2

Cordyceps spores have been a huge gameplay element since the first game of The Last of Us. The show runners decided not to use the spores in the first season, because then just like in the game, the actors had to wear gas masks a lot. Obscuring their acting. However I think the show runners had to implement airborne spores anyway, because otherwise the scene with Nora wouldn't be the same as the game. And not hit as hard as it did. Also like an earlier comment just mentioned. Just remember there is a B3 ;-). That will come in play next season. And honestly I can not wait for that episode.
