this rollercoaster of an episode

Eliza

Even is not an orphan. The sentence in Norwegian does not give that impression, but in English it sounds like it

JJ

Haney

this is one of those episodes where after finishing the season and doing a rewatch, it's even crazier. its such a good halfway point that leads us into the second half of the season.

Dee

Ooo I’m early

Isak

ODW is not a chemical spray at all, hahah. It's "operasjon dagsverk" in Norwegian, shortened to OD, and it's like... Operation Day's Work? Basically teens spend a day working? I can't really remember because it's been more than a decade since it was relevant to me, and I even think I snuck out of it somehow

seafop

I just know Everything Everywhere All At Once is in Isak's top 4 on Letterboxd

LM-Entertainment Australia

this episode is one of the messiest. it saddens me how short the seasons are because its such a good show. they could have spent more time on other characters in each season and giving them more airtime, even in seasons where they arent the lead character. love the reactions - cant wait for the next ep! :)

Isak

Also, when they guys are hanging out together, after Isak got that text from Even, and they're chatting and Isak is just sitting there being miserable, the Norwegian song in the background has a really *iconic* lyric that repeats and repeats, and it translates to, "oi, did you see, bro hit the ground"

Vegard Løknes

That conversation between Eskild and Isak had me so frustrated when this came out. I agree with both of them, and I felt Eskild should have been a little more above it as the older more experienced gay dude, knowing Isak isn't expressing pure hate or anything, but confusion and an identity storm, but seeing it again today I feel more for him. This show goes so damn hard.

lauren ☆

SO uncool on both sonja and emmas part honestly. i've always hated that.

Dionne Lakey

It just goes to show, that even with a somewhat accepting society, ally friends and gay friendships, it's still possible that the overall homophobia that we are all experience of this world, affects someone as loved and supported as Isak. All the media and images of this world are about hate, and so it is so so scary for Isak to come to terms with this about himself.

Anne Stine

Important to mention that it's a solidarity program where the teens donate their salaries for the day to a humanitarian cause. The whole point behind the OD-day (/Solidarity Action Day) is teens giving up one day of education in solidarity with less fortunate young people in other parts of the world, doing one day of working somewhere instead, and together using what they earn that day to make other young people's lives a little bit better. There's a new focus project each year, and in Norway it's been going on every year since the 60's.

Melina W

i literally feel like i went through every emotion known to man when i watched this episode! and i agree that all the characters are so realistic. Because of all the secrets and lies everyone is getting hurt and each person's situation is understandable.. the writing for this show is really amazing and watching your reactions has been so enjoyable! i really feel like i'm reliving the experience of watching the show for the first time <3

sean carter

those bed kisses at the start of the episode is so iconic to this day !!

Cat

Ik isak messed emma around but "It's 2016, come out of the closet" is a crazy thing to say to anybody. I can't back her on that one, no matter how upset she is. I love eskild & Isak's scene tho. Despite it being painful to watch Isak crash and burn, their acting was amazing and the dialogue between them was so good

Cat

We've seen Isak struggle with his identity so it makes sense that he doesn't feel "gay enough" but also not straight like his friend group. We could see that clearly when he took the gay quiz in another episode. His insecurities about not knowing where he fits in led to him being hateful and homophobic himself. I don't think he truly believes anyone is wrong for expressing themselves however they want. But he is so afraid of being seen like them that he tries to distance himself from his "queerness" every chance he gets. I'm gay but I'm not "gay gay". Common experience to have before coming out but he shouldn't direct his feelings in that way.

Randy Parker

You think this is the climax of the season. Heh.

Alex Naser-Hall

Every episode of the series is written and directed by the same person -- Julie Andem (our queen). She conducted extensive interviews with teenagers across Norway to see what type of stories they wanted to see onscreen and that's how the SKAM world was born. Fyi!

Em

@Anne Stine, thank you for explaining. I read something about it when I first watched Skam back in 2016 but I had forgotten exactly what it was. This is such a good thing to try to get teenagers to think about. Norway is such a beautiful country.

itsmiira

AAAAND.. we’ve reached the first drop on the rollercoaster. following skam s3 live was genuinely one of my most emotionally intense high school experiences, changed my brain chemistry, etc etc. so excited to watch you guys experience it for the first time

Lindsay

Seeing gifs from the first scene of this ep on Tumblr in 2018 is why I started watching this show....the hoodies..the bedding...the framing..the snuggling...it's perfection.

@baydreamer

Yep. Literally one sentence.

audrey

a certain line isak said in the locker room scene will be important to understand later

scottyG

I soooo love that you have no idea what's coming!!! I'm really loving your reactions. The only hard part is waiting for the next episode.

scottyG

Totally agree about Emma. Everybody should get to come out of the closet when they are ready.

scottyG

I'll also add that I really liked your analysis of Isak's internalized homophobia. I identify so much with this. I grew up as a punk rock kid in the 80's and 90's during the AIDS epidemic and suffered very badly with the same thing. It took me a very long time to come out, so I can really relate. It's taken me decades to be fully myself.

scottyG

Yes! And I love how you didn't mention it specifically as to not give away any spoilers!!

scottyG

Well said!

seafop

Right, like even in 2025, that would STILL be a crazy thing to say to someone, maybe worse depending on where you live. And especially coming from a (presumably) straight person. But I'll give her some grace because Isak has been awful to her all season, and it's probably something she said in the heat of the moment, and later regretted. Agree about the Isak and Eskild scene! Very uncomfortable to watch, but so, so necessary. I like how you can almost see Eskild trying to pick out his words to be admonishing and firm instead of blowing up at him and tearing down Isak's confidence completely - after all, he had just built up the courage to come out for the first time. But then everything afterwards happens and piles on, and... ouch.

EniOslo

In one way it shows that nobody is perfect though. I would have been hurt if somebody attacked me verbally like that, esp. the one that you offered the place to stay. In the heat of the situation, I would do the same as Eskild. 😞

EniOslo

This is new info that I havn’t heard before. Thanks.

EniOslo

You guys always say something clever and insightful, reacting to the series. Bradley I do believe you were the first reactor ( the ones that I followed) that mentioned clearly about what Isak said. Yes you were different from other gay persons, but you should not have looked down on others( who were also different from you)

CG

This is an episode where so much is said between lines or in glances.

CG

I think this episode, in the scene with Eskild, touches back on the party when Even called out Emma for reducing gay men to being funny. I kind of love how this show points to how we sometimes reduce the culture, or find the things we like and stick only to those, or, as we see with Isak this episode push away the parts of the culture we don't want to face. They go a lot deeper than one would think they would in the nuance of gay culture.

j-l

i love the isak and eskild scene so much, its SO difficult to watch but its so important.

rose

this episode is so lkasjflkasjdfklasd lmfaooooo. it starts so nice and then just keeps going down hill from there. every rewatch i just laugh hysterically through it because of how horrible it all goes. but i love how complicated it all is and it feels so real. that eskild and isak scene is sooooo goood. i get what isak is saying but he doesnt understand a lot and i love that eskild calls him in gently. when he's sitting there drinking afterward and zoning out, i feel so bad for him. re: emma. ehhhh idk, her comment about the closet was super uncalled for and i hate it. also that means he was outed by even to sonja, and then to emma. anyone who says "it's blah year, get out of the closet!" just doesnt understand the turmoil and idk. triggering moment fr. but hey remember the first 10 minutes of the episode??? good times, good times.

j-l

yeah pretty much every person ive seen watch this thinks his parents are dead😭😭

David Faux

“Where can we go from here?” Oh we haven’t even begun to peak here lol, fasten your couch belts, cuz you’re in for a ride. Also, someone else mentioned it, but Even is not an orphan and the phrase he uses doesn’t imply that in Norwegian. When I first watched the show I don’t even think that was the translation that I read, but that’s what happens with multiple people doing translations. Sometimes the literal phrase doesn’t translate well but changing it might change the idea or context, etc. etc.

Casper

Next episode needed IMMEDIATELY. Watching other people experience this for the first time reawakens the feral beast I became the first time i found skam and binged it all in two days. I’m so glad you’re covering this show! Best wishes to you both while watching the second half. We’re just now dipping a toe into the emotional core of the season. 🩷🩷

Danna T

The first time I watched the Isak Eskild scene I was so conflicted because even though I agreed with eskild, I couldn’t help but to feel like Isak was feeling, so I thought it was valid (and it 100% is) but my thinking was rooted in internalized homophobia which only made sense to me once I came out, so I’m glad this show has allowed me to grow in that way ❤️

Danna T

And guys this is not the climax

JustinThyme

Great reaction! This episode is so good. It starts off so good. They are so cute, cuddling in the bed. And I was happy that Isaak didn’t freak out in the locker room. When I first heard the name of the episode, I thought I could come from this scene because Isaak would be too afraid someone would come in and see him. But he is truly drawn to Evan. The scene with Eskild is so good. Eskild is so mature about it even though he is hurt by what Isaak said. And the ending is brutal. I need the next reaction now!

allie

the iwtv reference had me gaggeddddd. my multiverses of madness combining

Ryan

Omg I’m tweaking watching this because I know the things that happened in this episode that yall haven’t caught yet because you haven’t seen the next episodes haha any this was a great episode!! So excited to see the next one :)

Andy

The Jesus shirt Even is wearing is indeed the same one we've seen Eskild in during season 2, also Isak wears it in the first episode of season three. So its kind of the brotherhood of the travelling Jesus shirt. Even Noora wears it at one point in the scripts, or rather she talks about wearing it to Isak in the unfilmed epilogue of season 2.

Flo

People need to stop hinting at things in the comments! Even though there are no spoilers, which is great, by telling them stuff like “remember this scene” you’re opening the door for them to speculate about what detail is going to be important. Which means they can figure things out before they happen and no one wants that, we want their authentic reactions!

Mark Edwards

Completely disagree. Isak gave up the privilege of coming out on his terms when he lied and manipulated her to get closer to Even. If Isak had treated Emma that way to hook up with another girl, you all would be roasting him. Maybe it's because I started coming out 45 years ago when being visible was a matter of life and death but I have no problem with outing anyone who hurts others in order to stay in the closet. Time has proven we're all better off when everyone comes out. "Gay brothers and sisters, you must come out. Come out to your parents. I know that it is hard and will hurt them, but think about how they will hurt you in the voting booth! Come out to your relatives. Come out to your friends, if indeed they are your friends. Come out to your neighbors, to your fellow workers, to the people who work where you eat and shop. Come out only to the people you know, and who know you, not to anyone else. But once and for all, break down the myths. Destroy the lies and distortions. For your sake. For their sake." — Harvey Milk, 1978

Patrick

Well, now that we’ve reached the climax of the season.... 🤣😜🤣🤪🤣 So, between ep5 & ep6 was the mid-season 10-day hiatus (Nov. 4th-14th). Bear this in mind when ep6 begins. Buuuuut, there was one thing in that hiatus. There was a very short (19 seconds) teaser that dropped. This is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=avf9lVEEqDA Don’t watch it yet. Let the horrors of ep5 sink in & watch it before ep6. Coming out is scary & you’ve got to come out to yourself first — something our baby-gay Isak still hasn’t done. Eskild’s speech to him about Pride, etc., is stellar. I’ve shown it to straight folks who’ve been moved by it, never having heard the history put quite like that. A few little things: Did you notice Eva & Penetrator-Chris snogging at Emma’s party right when Isak walks in? There was also a great acting touch by Tarjei, a little quiver of the lip when Isak is digesting Even’s “too fast” message. And groovy belt, Bradley.

Anne

Don't spoil please

Patrick

Bingo. And Isak’s stoned glance into parallel universes with little (or big😉) deviations (like yellow curtains) is the conceit underlying all the later iterations of the Skam-OG story in France, Germany, Belgium, et cetera.

Anne

This! Just talk about this episode only. I really hope they don't read the comments.

Patrick

I tend to agree with Bradley & Adam about Emma telling Isak — in the middle of the party — to come out. Like so many people, I was originally mad at her for that, but I’ve become more sympathetic to her with time. (Someone has to, right?🤔) Isak toyed with her emotions & treated her awfully. It’s really harsh, but she’s entitled to speak her mind (& tell her friends what that Isak jerk did to her). He forfeited the right to ask her to keep his secrets. I know it’s each of our decisions to come out when we are ready, but here, he signed up for this risk when he decided to turn on the charm & lead her on. (We know from s01 that he can be charming & manipulative. And he learned it can blow up in his face.)

Henrik

Listen, I know the urge to talk about it is overwhelming, but even small things like this are spoilers. Don't even give them crumbs. Just let them watch it, and we can all talk about it at the end of the season. Please. I'm also excited for them to finish the season, but let them do it on their own.

Henrik

It was very tricky to translate that entire dialogue and this is the choice I made. I assure you though that it's not an error and it's not random, but we can talk about it when they've finished the season. 😁

Secular Scot

There is never a justification for outing anyone, when they haven't already done so themselves. Never. Emma was in the wrong.

Flo

While this comment isn’t a spoiler, it does give them knowledge that a first time viewer shouldn’t have and that could lead to them figuring things out in advance so I’d delete it if I were you

Flo

PJ

Not knowing that it’s gonna make more sense, is a much better experience of the show. Bc it gives them the experience the rest of us had of the show.

Lilly Mari 🇧🇻🌿

So sorry to hear this🥺❤️‍🩹 Breaks my heart that so many people go through this. Glad you are finally able to be yourself. Sending hugs from Norway 🫶

Olha77

What Even says in the wardrobe in school, doesn`t mean his parents are dead, but what they would have said if they met Isak.

Steven Jump

JJ, just ignore the Comment Cops! You didn't "spoil" anything.

Anne27x

i feel like emma had the right to call isak out for leading her on, but her telling him that he should just come out of the closet already - i didn't like that.

Eliza

I play the conversation between Eskild and Isak for my pupils every year in school. Still relevant and better than the textbooks when it comes to lgbt, tolerance, prejudice etc.

Daniel

Emma was definitely in the right to be angry at him, but it is also an ignorant comment to make about it being modern times and that he should just grow up and come out. It still isn't easy ! It still changes everything around you and how people behave around you even in modern progressive countries. Getting outed like that makes you feel like the world is falling apart, many of us can relate to that, even if your friends will accept it. It all goes back to the quote Noora had on her wall. Everyone is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind, always.

Marie Emelia

This is one of my favourite episodes of all seasons. The bed scene is just the cutest.❤️ And the scene with Eskild is so strong and important!! ✊️ In an interview Julie Andem (the writer/creator) she said she did a lot of interviews with gay youth before writing this season. And found that many of them were ignorant and dismissed Pride. She felt that they didn't know of the LGBTQ+ history and why it's still important with Pride and fighting for your rights. So she wanted to have a scene where the show could adress that 😉

Milana Smile

this is one of my favorite episodes! such a rollercoaster! the first scene is like sooo cute, they felt soo in love. it‘s so interesting that, just like you, everyone was scared how isak would react when even told him about taking a break with sonja, because he wasn‘t out. but in that moment isak didn’t care at all, because he was just so in love with him. isak was the happiest ever in the beginning of this episode and at the end everything was just a nightmare. and funny how you predicted was will happen at the party with emma, sonja and his friends. so exciting, thank you for your lovely reaction!

Michael

I think she did it out of anger because she really had feelings for Isak and was annoyed at the way he had been treating her. I guess it was a 'knee-jerk' reaction on her part.

David Faux

Oh I wasn’t implying it was an error, just that translating is tricky and I’ve seen multiple translations of the show in English and it’s interesting to see the differences (however few they are) between the different translations. Always appreciate the work of translators over the course of this show and all its iterations.

Haney

not sure what you mean by this, did he say something bad?

IAmom

I have a different take on this, but it is a spoiler, so I will wait until the end of season 3 to share 😅☺️

Mo

Finally someone understands Emma’s POV here!! Sometimes people love isak so much they don’t want to acknowledge his mistakes but that’s the point of the show. Love this ep though

Sid

Remember, also, that the characters had real social media profiles and, between clips, their relevant posts and texts and group chats were uploaded to the NRK SKAM webpage. If you go to the AllofSkam website, you can see these posts and text messages. Cath, aka @kosegruppie, who runs the AllofSkam website, has thoughtfully laid out the messages, Instagram posts and clips as they happened - so you can see what text messages, etc, were posted between clips without getting spoilers.

Lindsey Zwicker

Please delete this comment. It is a spoiler even though you’re being vague about the details.

Inna Kajaste

I always have to watch these reactions twice, first to just watch the episode and listen to your comments, and then another time to just watch your faces 😁❤️🔥

aslan

can you guys start doing 2 episodes per video please 😭 i cant wait this long for each episode

Hedda

Isak and Eskild scene in my heart Forever! ❤️

EniOslo

Could u please delete this ? Please?

Louise Mohlin

Controversial take but I’ve always thought Emma saying “It’s 2016 Isak, get out of the closet” was kinda iconic

Louise Mohlin

I also see people correcting misinterpretations that they’re going to find out about anyway - it’s more fun to let reactors be wrong until they found out for themselves!

Janita

Me, watching this on Patreon: Mannn I need to join their Patreon I need the next episode STAT.

Stina

Loved this ep! I think some things get lost in translation sometimes, like when Emma tells Isak that she “loves gay people” because “they’re so funny,” it sounds supportive but in Norwegian it felt more like for her gay people are amusing and harmless side characters rather than complex individuals. For Isak that comment confirms his fear of being seen as gay. Later, when Emma tells him to “come out of the closet,” she ignores how personal and difficult that process is, treating it as something he owes others. Emma’s happy to “love gay people” as long as they fit a harmless, likeable stereotype, but when Isak becomes a real person with flaws, it's not as simple as that. So even after starting to accept his feelings for Even, Isak insists to Eskild that he’s “not gay gay”, he’s still trying to distance himself from being seen as “gay” the way that Emma project onto him (and Eskild for that matter).

Louise Mohlin

It was actually admirable how Eskild held back his hurt and anger to admonish him in a calm and lecturing way. He handled it exceptionally well. We, as well as Eskild, understand where he’s coming from, but Isak did deserve to be put in his place there.

Vegard Løknes

That I disagree with. He showed more than enough, which is why it ended up being a bad interaction on both sides, one Isak is obviously more to blame for. Isak didn't deserve to be "put in his place", no one deserves that, because while it feels good to lecture and be above and look down, no matter how morally justified that's just not going to build bridges.

rose

oh cool i had never seen that teaser before. interesting to release in between those episodes.

Kristin Stokkan

I feel like there is never a justification for leading someone on/taking advantage of someone either, so like both of them were in the wrong..

CG

"Where can we got from here?". Oh child, you have no idea. Ahit gets deep in this season

Vanessa

Previous, this, and next episode is iconicccc

Cattis

Just started rewatching your reactions to season 1 and realized how lucky we are that you chose to watch the series from the start to really soak up season 3 properly. In the first season you guys were busy getting to know the characters and at the same time trying to keep up with the plot line. Even though there have been some new characters this season, thanks to you getting to know the Skam universe from the beginning, we can really dive deep into Isak’s experience and the impact of all the supporting characters. Really appreciate that! ❤️

Bel Pop

Ugh the Eskild and Isak scene 🥺

Louise Mohlin

Had a minor heart attack at Trump being mentioned, can't even watch my norwegian yaoi in peace without being reminded of current world events

Sophie Sjösten

Emma telling Isak to come out in front of everyone at the party is so insanely shitty. She's allowed to be upset because of what Isak has put her through, but it is not her place to out him like that. And I really liked the scene between Isak and Eskild, because it shows how people say things without really thinking it through and not necessarily meaning it in a harmful way, whether it be about sexuality, religion or similar. The way Eskild handled that was so amazing, not getting angry, but calmly and clearly talking to Isak about it and leaving him to think about what he said. Such a good episode!

JessieC

so Isak's mom is mentally unwell... and Isak's dad left her-- but he also left Isak there WITH her. They touched on it season 2 just for a few minutes but a lot was implied in those little comments. So he's unhappy with his dad for abandoning them, but needs him financially, and he ended up abandoning his mom too-- so I would guess theer is some guilt and conflicting feelings there too. His mom won't leave him alone with the religious stuff, he was homeless and crashing on people's couches and in Eskild's basement for a while, then he finally gets an in with Eskild for a place to stay. He has no family, so I can totally see why he'd be terrified to come out, he has EVERYTHING to lose if it goes badly... but now he's ended up pushing them away anyway. I understand why Emma is upset, but Sonja had no business telling Emma, and Emma had no business outing him, now he has no family connections, no friends, no boyfriend, and he's insulted the guy who is keeping a roof over his head. "where can we go from here?" LOL yeah.... pft I absolutely LOVE how every season we are led to believe the season is about one thing-- the thing that brings them shame (which is what SKAM means) but by the end we realize that was NOT the biggest issue they had to deal with and a whole other bigger issue is going to put their lives in perpective-- it happens every season. another point only slightly related is that I heard it's not uncommon for teenagers to live in shared apartments, if there is a school you want to go to because it specializes in something then they stay in apartments with other students so they can go there. Nora's parents live abroad and so she lived there with Eskild, keep in mind she's 16 also. It's not out of the question that Even also had roommates so the "hello?" when he came in could have een family or roommates-- fun fact though it was actually one of the actors apartments being used... Marlon's maybe? (Jonas) so the pile of coats was by chance and made sense in the fact that it was not staged, it was legit the apartment of a bunch of teenage boys.
