In this video, we react to the premiere of Netflix's new drama, Boots! Enjoy our reaction to Episode 1: "The Pink Marine".

What do you get when the Marines meets closeted queer? Well, Boots, of course.

We're so excited to be reacting to this Netflix show directed by Phil Abraham, Kyle Patrick Alvarez, Silas Howard, Peter Hoar and Tanya Hamilton, starring the likes of Miles Heizer, Max Parker, Vera Farmiga, and Liam Oh.

Bullied gay teen Cameron (Miles Heizier) joins the Marine Corps with his best friend Ray (Liam Oh) despite risks. In boot camp they experience profound personal change amid danger, as their platoon confronts both literal and figurative landmines.

We hope you enjoy this reaction! Stay tuned for the next episode. 🪖🏳️‍🌈

iconic !! the amount of viral tweets I've been seeing on Twitter with this cast.. . I'm excited to rewatch this now for the 4th time, this time with y'all !!

Boogie

Bradley: “did you see bubble butt on the left?” Bitch why was that meeeeeeee? 😂😂😂

Dionne Lakey

You missed the Golden Girls joke!

Dionne Lakey

The 1990 of it is so important. It's set only 3 years after Fellow Travelers ended. If you can imagine a teen like Frankie and Marcus' 'adopted' son Jerome, being the age of these guys in Boot Camp, it helps to understand the stakes a little better.

sean carter

I could see that Adam was into it from the start and Bradley slowly eventually got into it lol.

Bradam Reacts

I truly was so thrown off by the vibe of the show it was SO not what I was expecting that I was truly taken aback. BUT IM SO GLAD ITS THE WAY THAT IT IS ITS GONNA BE PERFECT

P

The fact that the racist leader guy is matt donovan from vampire diaries ..... something just makes sense about that

Lisette Agosto

As someone who's been through bootcamp, (Airforce not Marines) this is an extremely accurate portrayal of the first few days. Shit gave me flashbacks lol 😆 I will fully admit that I cried my first night thinking I made an awful mistake. Also, I was in basic in 2011 when Don't Ask Don't Tell was still in affect. (It wasnt repealed until later that year.) So having to go through this AND hide who I was makes this show so relatable.

It does get darker. I had to take a break after episode 5. I did really like it overall though.

CG

This show is really interesting. It critiques the military yet doesn't eviscerate it. It makes moments seem horrifying yet comes close at times to glorifying. I kinda like that approach. It is a bit yin/yang.

Steven Jump

Frankly, this show didn't live up to the hype it was getting and it was boring in places. Max Parker who plays the new drill instructor is gay. Miles Heizer who plays the main character is gay also. Bradley you need to watch 13 Reasons Why. It's very good but deals with some heavy subjects.

this is such an incredible show. i didnt expect it to be like it is either, but i found myself watching the whole sesaon in one sitting. the character development is incredible over the season (which i think is way too short). it mixes comedy with some very serious issues. if you aren't into it fully now, id suggest giving it a couple more episodes. while it is marketed or seems to focus on being "gay-themed" - it's about discrimination in many forms and finding the courage within to fight against that. a long time ago, i was apart of a course like this that went for 26 weeks and included all of the "bastardisation" you see going on in this episode. that was close to the 90s, but not in the US. now, places have cut down on that (for obvious reasons).

Bradam Reacts

Yeah, I feel as though it’s not going to shred the military to bits, but it tells a story, that’s very likely commonplace. It also (while not to this extreme) happens ever to people all over the world! Feeling completely out of place due to your sexuality isn’t a new feeling at all and it can be just as scary if treatment like this is taking place in your own home. It just tells the story of it in bootcamp. So it’s taking from both sides, very yin yang!! Good thoughts!!!

Bradam Reacts

Interesting!! I’m just so happy to see gay people in gay roles telling new gay stories! I actually can’t imagine where it’s going to take us (assuming the whole story takes place in bootcamp) so we’ll see how they keep our attention throughout 😼

CG

I like that it isn't what I was expecting and actually looks to shed some light on the parts of military that actually can have positive benefits

sean carter

I see where u are coming from Steven.. at first I would say I was taken aback, similar to Bradley as I was not sure what I was getting into but me personally I have not seen a show tackle themes like this in such a long time and this is a real story about a gay man in the military and I think it came across really authentic without trying to add too much gloss to appeal to a certain demographic. I think people who are expecting a fully QUEER story would be disappointed.. as that's what I initially thought going into it but then I realized its more about a gay man navigating himself in a world where people said he doesn't belong and that resonated with me a lot. the fact that a lot of the actors in this are also gay and even married and they casted queer actors makes this even more special.

Michael

I loved Boots, and am very much looking forward to your reactions. FYI, I am really enjoying your great reactions to SCAM season 3. Keep up the good work guys.

Dionne Lakey

Yeah five of the actors are gay

Steven Jump

I liked it, just didn't love it. If it's the true story I think it's based on, there is a documentary about him during his tour of the Iraq war.

Steven Jump

I know Max and Miles are. Who are the other 3?

Joe Lancaster

I rather liked this show and am also very much looking forward to your reactions to it. Also really hoping it gets renewed for a 2nd season.

Joe Lancaster

Great reaction guys. Look forward to the next one. Miles was also in Love Simon

BrynnieM

The book it’s based off of is actually a memoir, so the concept of the show is based off a true story.

Lindsay

Y'all are soooo real for saying it's borderline comical how "macho" they're trying to be all the time. Like it's so over the top that you almost can't take it seriously.

Lindsay

also Bradley your pink sweater is teeaaaa 💖 and very ep title appropriate

Jonathan Day

Ha! I just finished this series last night. Can't wait to see your reactions!

K

I wasn't gonna watch this show but then binged it in one night. The best part is that most of the main cast is gay in real life. The actors who play Cope, Hick and Jones are all gay and the actoe who plays Sullivan is both gay and British so now I want him be the new James Bond.

K

My only problem with Boots: It takes place in 1990. 3 years before Bill Clinton signed "Don't Ask Don't Tell" into law as the official policy of the United States military and would remain so until it was repealed in 2010 by Democrats and Barack Obama.

Mark Edwards

FYI, Boots is slang for Marines just out of bootcamp.

K

The Melania cut 😬 I wasn't ready 🤣

Ludy

Bradley: My cortisol is THROUGH THE ROOF Me: I fuckin TOLD YOU (I literally put that in the chat a few days ago)

K

Adam with the ACAB! 🤣🤣🤣 The US military is a pipeline into civilian law enforcement so you're about to get a crash course in why our police force is basically an army of racist mercenaries who look at fellow citizens like they're the enemy. The psychological and emotional manipulation it takes to turn them into automated killers for the armed forces should require deprogramming when they go back into civilian life.

Mark Edwards

To be clear, DADT was a Department of Defense directive not legislation so Clinton did not sign it into law. He actually ran on a platform that called for eliminating the ban. Once he took office, bigots in congress from both parties started the process of enshrining the homosexual ban in federal legislation. DADT was an end run to kill the effort. It actually stopped the military from asking recruits their sexual orientation thus requiring gay people to lie. Of course we know in hindsight that bigots in the military command structure used the policy to ratchet up gay persecution to unprecedented levels.

K

Today's wardrobe choices are A+. The fit of the denim and that tank....😍

K

I was around. Im old enough to remember and while it was the best policy at the time to stop worse from happening that can't stop from calling bad. Less harm is still harm. The younger generation today lives with a lot of peace, privilege nd complacency because they don't know or didn't have to live though the struggles of the past. That's one reason our country is fucked up today. For all the positivity in Boots, those of us who are older know that it was so much darker than what we see.

Ludy

I did some Googling about military history stuff. This is the Cliff's notes version, obviously. 1917: any person subject to military law who committed "assault with intent to commit sodomy" shall be punished as a court-martial may direct. 1940: psychiatrists formulated guidelines for psych screenings to keep homosexuals from being inducted 1949: the newly consolidated Department of Defense standardized anti-homosexual regulations across all branches of the military: "Homosexual personnel, irrespective of sex, should not be permitted to serve in any branch of the Armed Forces in any capacity, and prompt separation of known homosexuals from the Armed Forces is mandatory." 1981: a new regulation on homosexuality that was designed to ensure withstanding a court challenge by developing uniform and clearly defined regulations and justifications that made homosexual status, whether self-applied or by the military, and conduct grounds for discharge. 1992: "Gays in the military" became a political issue during when Clinton, the Democratic candidate, promised to lift the military's ban on homosexual and bisexual people. 1993-2011: Don't Ask, Don't Tell. LGBTQ+ individuals could serve as long as they did not disclose their orientation or engage in homosexual conduct.

B

I had mixed emotions but by episode 4 I was FULLY invested. loved the series. equally excited for the reaction...

A N

someone correct me if i'm wrong but i'm pretty sure the scene at 22:40 with the shaving cream is because poc with curly or coily facial hair can develop pseudofolliculitis so the drill instructor was looking out for the recruit

JustinThyme

Very glad you’re covering this show! Here for the reactions. Loved the shower commentary!😂

Jago BC

On my initial watch, I really struggled with the first three episodes of this show, but was sold by the end of E4. Rewatching the first episode here is interesting though I can't say I really like it any better than before. This is definitely a series that took a minute to find its tone.

@baydreamer

I really liked 13 Reasons Why which is where I first saw Miles.

nora

"did you see bubble butt on the left?" "omg🙄ofc i did" i'm dyinggg 😭😭

Robert W

As a gay veteran I appreciate you guys being on the military’s neck and saying ACAB. I personally joined to pay for college but I agree with everything you said about the military and cops. Also, everything is pretty accurate in this show so you get a good idea of everything you’d experience in basic training… actually it’s worse in real life.

London Rials 🩷

You are 100% right. I fucking hate it SOO much like our coily beards make it so easy for razor bumps

John Dillon

Okay I feel I need to provide some context. I grew up in the late 70’s and early 80’s this is how it was. Those of you that are part of Gen Z or the millennials have not experienced this level of homophobia in your life but this was the norm for those of us before you. We had to pretend to be who were weren’t. And Adam most of us were disciplined by our parents in a way you weren’t. I really love the you are open to watch programs like this that give you insight into the way it was to be gay before you were born.

Alexandra Trojanowski

Ooh yes, your biceps and shoulders are showing up, Adam! How are you sleeveless and Bradley in an ombre cardigan in the same room? Spain weather must be lovely, it's still hot AF in HTX right now if the sun is out! Anyway, that was just my pregame comments, onto the show.

Alexandra Trojanowski

I don't know about the marines, but I have a Two-Star General and also a Red Beret, whose rank I think is Tech Sergent among 2 of my 4 siblings. Also a nephew who served but is a civilian now ... All Air Force. When you get to see them at the end when they still have to live on base but it's closer to the graduation or whatever it's called, it's pitiful. They are so cowed until BASIC is officially over, it's almost like dealing with someone who was recovered from like an island airplane crash after years, that sort of astonishment at the freedom and civility of the outside world. All of my family that served are cis/het too, but for my sister, she was an 18 year old woman who joined in 1984! To get free college (she has a master's degree now too!). That was a pretty steep incline too! No bed of roses.

sobelou

Good reaction guys, back in your channel again! Yes, this show isn't exactly what you were thinking beforehand. It was a sad time, back in 1990, even before Don't Ask Don't Tell, when the ban was absolute and being found out meant at best a dishonorable discharge and at worst prison time. It's an important show, especially now, when some in power want to push the clock back/ Thanks! Luis
