In this video, we react to the second episode of Netflix's new drama, Boots! Enjoy our reaction to Episode 2: "The Buddy System".

What do you get when the Marines meets closeted queer? Well, Boots, of course.

We're so excited to be reacting to this Netflix show directed by Phil Abraham, Kyle Patrick Alvarez, Silas Howard, Peter Hoar and Tanya Hamilton, starring the likes of Miles Heizer, Max Parker, Vera Farmiga, and Liam Oh.

Bullied gay teen Cameron (Miles Heizier) joins the Marine Corps with his best friend Ray (Liam Oh) despite risks. In boot camp, they experience profound personal change amid danger, as their platoon confronts both literal and figurative landmines.

We hope you enjoy this reaction! Stay tuned for the next episode. 🪖🏳️‍🌈

@3:00 I would say the opposite. Cameron very much accepts who he is, his inner voice is how he thinks of himself and at the end of the first episode, he tells his voice that he won't be pushing him down. He does have to hide in the environment to survive, but he doesn't think negatively about his gayness. Instead, his plan is to get rid of the part of him that is scared and doesn't stand up for himself in bullying situations. He wants to gain the confidence to have more mental and emotional strength to survive in the world in general. With his friend by his side to support him.

The whole point of this behavior by the DI's is to break the recruits down to their very basic parts and build them back up into hardened soldiers. They have to find the weaknesses. Anyone who can't hack it is out. Better to find out what a recruit is made of in training rather than under pressure or in combat.

So the show is created by and the main writer is Andy Parker. There are about 7 writers in the writing room including 3 marines, one of those being Greg Cope White the author of The Pink Marine, which the show is INSPIRED by not based on. There's a lot of intersection in the writers' room: Black marine, Female Marine, Gay Latino and other queer writers etc. So yeah, I think the show's writing is very intentional. It's good to pay attention to all the lines because they're all deliberate and often subtle.

I hate the methods they use but in this episode you can see that two DIs are pulling on the weaknesses of two sets of buddies (one set: two best friends, the other set : twin duelling brothers). With one set they break them apart to teach them to be strong independent of each other. With the other set they push them together to show them that they need each other. It's why John says to Cameron while he's pissing that Cameron has it bad too. He's not referring to his gayness, lol. He's referring to how they're testing his buddy relationship.

I love that they gave us backstories.. reminded me a lot of how orange is the new black was.

You guys assume gay soldiers are repressed because they joined the military and that’s not always the case. I personally accepted my sexuality fully and joined not really knowing about Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. Many veterans were kicked out because they accepted their sexuality and acted on it. People join the military for a way to pay for college, a lack of opportunities at home, and belief that the military serves a purpose in protecting us. For Cameron I think he saw the military as a way to get out of a bad home life and while in boot camp he faced more of a struggle to believe in himself.

You guys have to pay attention to the Drill Instructors too because it’s a method to the madness. The brothers hate each other so Howitt ties them together….

Im so excited for you guys to continue watching this

I really love that you see something a lot of people don't see in the show. It shows why people are there, and it also shows why they stay. Some people got a little mad at the show saying it glorifies the military. I don't think it really does that. What I think it does is show some of the benefits of the experience that might actually keep people there even though there are other things like being gay that should have you running the other way. If they didn't show some of the better moments, this whole show would make no sense. We would just be wondering why the f*** Cameron stayed there. They had to show some positive things and some growth out of the experience in order to justify him staying as long as he does to this point.

You get college, and you can also get a trade that might have civilian value too. It's not just psychological drive, there are practical reasons to join the military, although the cache of Marines being the toughest does drive a certain profile there more often I guess. The drill instructors are playing everything really smart. Ray thinks he's better than most people there, I mean not in a shitty mean way, but like ...in an ambition way, like he's more suited to go far. Taking away leadership from him when one of his group fails (and especially when he didn't even act that fussed about it) was exactly right! Cameron was never going to fully branch out, if he had Ray to get his back, but you can't be a rounded team member, if you're only wrapped up in one other person. Plus, the recon guy, is dying for Cameron to stand up for himself, but like in a disciplined sort of way that's not about piss. That's why he kept on Ray to hit him harder, that's why he made him be in charge of a chore everyone would hate, on and on. Y'all did recognize the line about claiming a service was from the Godfather right? Like, please tell me you know one of the best movies in the history of cinema! Man did I love Joy Division back in the day! I mean they weren't JD anymore by the point of "Blue Monday" but it was still the same sound ...

Great reaction! I’m glad that you’re sticking with this show. I it’s very well made and well acted. I enjoy your speculations about you people join and why they want to stay and what they are going to accomplish,

Loving this show. I will say it interesting seeing a different generation reacting to this show. The way these guys were treated are no different than how most gay men were treated during this period.

Y’all have to read about the military concept of leadership. Leaders take care of their people. The most simple concept is that they will not eat a meal before all their people have been nourished. Their purpose is care. This can be hard to see in boot camp but this time builds this theory. It builds this loyalty. I mean I don’t know - I haven’t served. But talk to people who have served. I think people will find the ideas of people who have actually experienced this surprising.
