The press conference scene was about the fact that Ilya is still very much practicing English and it's hard for him. The reporter asked a very long and complicated question and Ilya got lost. Shane noticed it and jumped in to help. Ilya thanked him with the foot tap. I love that scene <3 Also did you notice the little "wow" from Ilya in 40:30 when Shane got to his knees. Ilya was surprised (in the best way possible) that Shane obeyed so quickly😂♥️

The rooftop scene hurts me because neither of them are the bad guy here, they are just both hurt and bad at communication. From Shane's perspective Ilya is being hostile for no reason and he is hurt that Ilya wasn't there to congratulate Shane on his win, because Shane would've been there if Ilya had won. Ilya was the person Shane wanted to see there the most. Also the kiss feels inappropriate for Shane, because there is tension between them that Shane wants resolved. Also they are in public and Shane's biggest fear is being discovered. From Ilya's perspective however, he is anxious because he has to go home to russia. Not only to the country where his existence is illegal but also to his awful family. The abusive father and the shitty brother. He is going through his own struggles. Ilya doesn't want to fight with Shane and tries to fix things and connect with Shane through the kiss. Neither of them wants this tension between them but they don't know how to resolve it, since they don't know what went wrong. Because they don't communicate🤦🏼 So yeah, as you can see, these boys are not the best at communicating at the beginning at least :')

And yess it is a slow burn but you have to think of the romance as the slow burn not necessarily the sex. As someone who read the book, when I heard it was being adapted to TV I was wondering how they would do it without basically making softcore porn, and thats exactly what happened! Lol. But I am loving this adaptation so far, and I love how the sex scenes also show their dynamic and how they communicate. Coz the only chance they get to speak and to let their guards down are when they meet to hookup

Thanks for this reaction, guys <3 A few things for clarification: Jane and Lily is just what they call each other in their phones, since they can't be found out. Svetlana is not Ilya girlfriend. He just sleeps with her sometimes. In the beginning Ilyas English is not very good and he has a heavy accent so maybe have the subtitles on if that can work? He gets progressively better which is also evident in the books. Connor Storrie is not Russian, he doesn't speak Russian and just had two weeks of training before filming - guess he is just good at accents and picking up languages - lol. Hudson also doesn't speak French which he also had to kinda learn for the show. You will get a lot more context if you read/listen to the books. I think that was it for now - I cannot wait for the next episode from you guys <3

Loved your reaction and cannot wait for more! A few things I wanted to point out - maybe they're more obvious if you have read the book: 1. The time jumps - while hard to follow in the beginning, they're keeping the story realistic considering the main characters' pro hockey careers. Those are the times they met up for games, award shows, commercials, etc. 2. I also think Ilya's English is a big factor in this episode - he's already the more forward character, but his limited English makes him sound more direct I think. In the interview scene where Shane takes over for him answering, he is helping him out bc he sees he's struggling with the complex question (it's explained better in the book). 3. Not book related, but the actor playing Ilya is from Texas and learned Russian for the part which is so impressive I think. And apparently his pronunciation is excellent (not that I can tell:)

At this point, that's exactly how it should be. In the first few years after they meet, the two are just fuck buddies who meet a few times a year for 1-2 hours in hotels when they play against each other or after events. I just hope that even without insights into the characters' thoughts, they'll do a good job to portray how their romantic feelings develop over the years.

About the timeline: At the beginning, the two are still playing in the youth leagues, so Ilya is still living in Russia and they only see each other at the Prospect Cups (2008 and 2009), the draft (2009) and then before the start of the season 2010 for the photo shoot. From fall 2010 onwards, they play in the NHL for Boston and Montreal. So they only see each other a few times a year when they play against each other or attend events. That's why there are so many time jumps. And be patient. It's basically a fuck buddies to lovers story.

Shane represents freedom but Shane has no idea what Ilya is dealing with but then when Ilya kisses Shane he's confronted by Shane's fear of having his sexuality exposed. One of the other reactions I saw (a good one, actually, by, of all people some sports bros) said. "Where are the stakes?". I think you two got what they didn't. They clearly are obsessed with each other, but there is so much pressure behind the scenes (so to speak... to contradict the pressure in the front of their pants). I think a lot of Ilya's douchiness stems from that immense pressure: can't get too close, can't show I care (which amazingly Shane DOES do, and well), can't get invested, need to keep this about occasional fun because there is so much pressure for the hockey side to go smoothly.

Love the contrast between Ilya's rough and forward (but interestingly thoughtful) lover and Shane's trepidatious but deep and romantically driven sweetheart. They both want this, but the difference in how they show it is as interesting as any professional rivalry. The real fight with Ilya is with himself (oddly, the one more comfortable with his sexuality and with more experience). Kinda cute how Shane falls head first (so to speak) into crushville.

I’m so glad that you guys are reacting to this. I’m a big fan of the books/the 6 book series, which I read about two years ago. It’s most definitely very smutty, but the books give so much more context into how they’re feeling and what they’re struggling with. That being said, the first two episodes surpassed my expectations. The directing and acting is everythinggg so far. They’re doing such a great job of showing not telling the emotions. I saw someone else say that the show so far is 90% accurate to the events of books but 100% respectful to the books, and I definitely agree with that assessment so far. The time jumps between their meetups is accurate to the books, because they’re really only seeing each other and talking more whenever their teams play each other. They have some award shows or other obligations that give them more opportunities to see each other, but beyond that they do go months at a time in between - so we’re not missing much in these episodes. Their story takes place over the two books as you mentioned, and book 2 is even better (in my opinion). Now that I’ve seen the first two episodes I’m definitely feral for more seasons. Jacob Tierney (the director) did buy the rights for the other two books, so if the hype holds up I feel good about them filming more. I definitely recommend the books and some bonus material on Rachel Reid’s website. For example, there’s a short piece that has Ilya’s perspective on something that happens in Episode Two on Rachel’s site. This is the most excited I’ve been over a show since Young Royals.

PS: I could gush over Connor & Hudson so much. I love how different they are from their characters. Lots of people in Russia/Russian speakers have said that Connor is doing an amazing job - so much so they thought he was Russian… but he’s just a boy from Texas. This makes me wish that they had made Red White & Royal Blue into a series instead of a movie. They left out so much about what made the book and those characters so great. Heated Rivalry is adapting its book so well so far.

This is such a faithful book adaptation, I'm speechless. So many lines of dialogue taken directly from the book, and the two actors who look EXACTLY like Shane and Ilya and are perfect for these roles. The only deviation from the book is that there is no height difference, Ilya is much taller than Shane. Other than that, it's like someone shook the book and these two fell out. And they convey so much emotion with their faces and expressions, it's gonna be so good as the story progresses and slowly shifts from casual hookups to more meaningful and emotional scenes.

As a fan of the "Heated Rivalry" book , and the sequel "The Long Game" I feel that they have done this show so much justice to the writing that Rachel Reid has on these characters. Being able to watch these hot and steamy scenes and seeing that throughout there is communicated consent is vital and isn't something that is common in media nowadays. The way it's filmed and the connection you see when they are in a very vulnerable state, is just so beautiful to watch. I'm so excited to see the other episodes (Remember Scott Hunter!!!) and how they adapt the progress of the book and see on screen the way their relationships grows and matures. Very excited to see how you guys react to episode 2 as well, as we see more of those outside influences affecting these men. Loved your video so much!

Just a little context for perspective into the hockey world, this is a sport that isn't super welcoming if you're not straight, white, and at least somewhat wealthy. To this day, there has been less than 40 NHL players of Asian descent to have ever been in the league. So it really is a big deal for a star player like Shane to be a visible minority in a historically white dominated sport, hence the Serena Williams and Tiger Woods comparison. As for openly gay players, there are currently none in the NHL. There was one openly queer player who was drafted back in 2020 but he never got to play in an NHL game before his contract expired. He's currently playing on a team in the AHL which is still pretty awesome. Also Svetlana is NOT Ilya's girlfriend. They have a friends with benefits relationship and are not together exclusively. Ilya's a bit of a player but he is no cheater. Excited for your ep 2 reaction!

I feel like a lot of people aren’t catching what’s actually happening in that moment. When the reporter compares Shane to Tiger Woods and Serena Williams, it’s not just about saying he’s insanely talented, obviously he is. The comparison is also loaded with the fact that both Tiger and Serena were pioneers in their sports and were among the first highly visible athletes of color in spaces that were predominantly white. So when the reporter throws Shane into that same category, it’s a subtle microaggression. It reduces him to being “the first” or “the exception” as an Asian Canadian player instead of simply acknowledging his skills. It’s a way of othering him, even though it’s framed as a compliment. I’m really interested to see how the show handles this, because in the book it isn’t a huge plot point. But it is an important moment that shows the racial dynamics he’s navigating, and it’s more than just “he’s really good,” which is all a lot of people seem to be taking from it.

Their competitive dynamic and sexual chemistry is so fucking hot. And YES the 2nd book ends in their wedding so this story is a happy ending and it's a very deep love story so buckle up. From obsessively watching reaction content I think one of the things the show doesn’t do well is making it clear how much Ilya is struggling with English at this point. His difficulty understanding the language and insecurity about his accent are major points of vulnerability for him in the book that are lacking in the show.

The scene where they do the press conference together & Shane jumps in to answer the question first is important. At this point Ilya still struggles with English as his second language (which bothers him) and the question he is asked is incredibly long & detailed. The book quote is "He (Shane) turned his head and saw that Ilya was looking at him, and his face showed that he was hoping Shane would field this one. Rozanov probably only understood about half the words. Shane thought it was a pretty stupid question, honestly." Knowing that bit of context from the book you can see Ilya trying to translate the words in his head by the look on his face. 🩵

I recommend watching this series, even though it's been 25 years since it first came out on December 3rd. I watch this series every fall, it's my favorite series of all. But it's a drama series, about 50 minutes each episode, and there are 5 seasons. Maybe in the long run for you?But I think Brian Kinney deserves a look. You as Americans should be proud that your country produced the most amazing series of all time (and Breaking bad, of course)
