In this video, we react to the Finale episode of Netflix's new dramedy, Boots! Enjoy our reaction to Episode 8: "The Crucible".

What do you get when the Marines meets closeted queer? Well, Boots, of course.

We're so excited to be reacting to this Netflix show directed by Phil Abraham, Kyle Patrick Alvarez, Silas Howard, Peter Hoar and Tanya Hamilton, starring the likes of Miles Heizer, Max Parker, Vera Farmiga, and Liam Oh.

Bullied gay teen Cameron (Miles Heizier) joins the Marine Corps with his best friend Ray (Liam Oh) despite risks. In boot camp, they experience profound personal change amid danger, as their platoon confronts both literal and figurative landmines.

We hope you enjoy this reaction! Fingers crossed for a second season. 🪖🏳️‍🌈

yayyy. this was such a great show ! I ended this not feeling sorry for Sullivan anymore... he caused everything that was happening... all the investigation etc... was all started because he told his best friend about the guy he was with and it all spiraled from there.. it was all sad in the end.. I'm unsure if I need a season 2 of this.. can't see how it will work as they will no longer be in boot camp.

Sullivan preferred being dishonorably discharged for killing a man... rather than for being gay.... that's why he was ok with leaving... the investigation would be over.

CG

I felt sorrier for Sullivan. He was caught between love, duty and an unfair system. He made horrible decisions AND he was on a completely unenviable position with few options

Bradam Reacts

which is sooooo… 😭 it’s so unfortunate and I think while it wasn’t what I thought I was going to get out of his character it was real. men would rather kill each other than communicate and share. it’s why we have to have the marines in the first place 💀

This episode did not go where I thought it would, in a lot of ways. People with a way out don't take it, and those without one take the wrong detour. This was the episode where I felt the worst for Sullivan. He was horrible for sure, which I think he would agree with; and he made so many of the awful decisions because he was in a fucked up system. Hopefully Cameron will learn from that... As for him, I knew he would stay but hadn't anticipated the details at all. With the decision he made, however, I really came to appreciate a lot of the moments of the bonding and the growth and the winds that had come before. If they had not gone to the levels that they had to show the positives of military life, that ending would have made no sense whatsoever and would have been incredibly maddening. Above all, however, I loved how characters we didn't like loved how characters I really disliked showed grace, and those I did like showed fatal flaws. Great end to a surprising series.

UA = unathorized absence ... and we're definitely set up for a second season, with Cope deployed somewhere

I still think the Cody and John situation was darker than it appears. I got the vibe Cody was being sexually/physically abused and he was sacrificing himself to keep John safe. The breakdown Cody had screams he needed John in that moment. The pitting the brothers against each other screams abuse tactics… by isolating the brothers you could easily abuse them.

I relate to Cam and Sullivan because as gay veteran there are things you love and hate about the military so it becomes a mindfuck. I think Sullivan would have stayed in the military if he was allowed to be himself. Cam feels he can make his own path and be gay while still serving in the marines. Hopefully, we get a season 2 with most of the characters returning.

Great reaction to the finale! I really enjoyed your coverage of this series, include your hesitation at first. I thought it was very well done, with amazing acting. I love how many of the cast are queer actors and regardless of orientation, really seemed to bond as they filmed this. As you were talking about the end, with the news about the Middle East, that if this show does come back for season 2, it will be very difficult to have the same tone. By no longer being in boot camp, but in the middle of an actual conflict, it seems like it will need to lean into the heavier reality of war and be harder to find the places for humor and levity. It will be interesting to see what they do if there is a next season

I don't know, I've had a million thoughts since seeing it, but I think the ending made me like the show so much more. I recently watched The Long Walk (a beautifully tragic film with queer undertones that I 1000% recommend), and a lot of people who watched it have shared the same sentiment of not understanding how certain kinds of indoctrination that establishments like the military employ can work so thoroughly, but Boots really clicked it for me. It felt like I was tricked by the time we got to the end scene in the bar, despite Cameron's inner voice begging him to understand it was time to wrap it up and go home. They chose the perfect nail in the coffin, too, because I was so in it with Cam, wanting his mom to see him as a full person, that I was fully ignoring reason. The show's mood shifting from finally feeling safe to slapping me in the face with the severity of the situation in a minute is the kind of jarring ending I love. It's like a horror movie.

Supposedly this was the core of the real story: deciding to move on with the military and knowing it has had benefits, while also knowing that it will likely squash a very huge part of you. That was the paradox of the book I think

Really enjoyed this rewatch with you boys. The fact that I found it just as enjoyable the second time through shows what a great show it is. Will be interesting if the clearly setup season 2 gets made. I haven’t read Pink Marine but from interviews with Cope White, I gather the series creators opted to shift the time frame from the 80s to early 90s. Future seasons could explore the Gulf War and the arrival of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.

Ending with the beginning of the first Iraq War was a gasp. That was the first domino that again planted America in the Middle East that would lead to 9/11, Afghanistan and being lied into invading Iraq by Bush's son. Thousands of innocent military lives will be lost. When Cope says "Just like summer camp" that's all I could think about.

shady07

Thanks. Now we want heated rivalry episode 2

K

There was 100% mental, emotional and physical abuse happening to both brothers. John was coping with food and Cody was coping by trying to make himself closer to his dad thinking that would make the abuse stop but that instead made him start inflicting the same abuse on his brother. Then the Marines continues the cycle of emotional and psychological abuse.

Bradam Reacts

We CANT WAIT! But we gotta start Skam S4 first!!! ☺️

Bradam Reacts

I literally froze 😭 i was like “ohhhhh okay idk if i need that season” LMAOOO

Bradam Reacts

I think for a second season I’d love a time jump or maybe even focusing on a different character! Idk! I think they have some things to explore :))

Bradam Reacts

VERY interesting to hear you say actually. honestly maybe a reason why there was some discourse around the show. but it’s true and it’s what people do!! UGH the show was so good

K

Sullivan is the tragic figure of the show because here he the image of the ideal Marine but he's dying inside trying to maintain that image all because the straights can't reconcile the fact that some men are born attracted to other men and some women are born attracted to other women. That is is an issue for them but not the rampant sexual assault and rape that were/are being committed by straight men in the military. The hypocrisy of mortality destroyed Sullivan.

K

Right! The Clinton years were better except for him signing Don't Ask Don't Tell but if they jump forward o to the 2000s I'm not gonna lookk forward to watching that no matter how hot they are or how good the acting is. The reality is still too traumatic to enjoy it as entertainment.

shady07

Heated rivalry is the moment babes you gotta get on it

booluther

The whole idea of Sullivan rather being discharged because of getting a felony then for being gay is heartbreaking.

TxFootballGamGam

100% agree. I only joined for Heated Rivalry reactions.

Sofi

the fist time I heard “did you misrepresent yourself?” From the captain I was sure cam’s mom told her that he was gay 😭

Nicole

Loved this series!

Vegard Løknes

I mentioned this when I signed up to your Patreon, but perhaps Andor could serve as a replacement for this show. Now it’s way more in the vein of The Last of Us than Boots (but it at least features queer characters), but it deals with really important principles, and is perhaps the best show in recent years, besides Severance

Dionne Lakey

I love how this show can make you forget from time to time the overall stakes of the US Military, and them the ending reminds you specifically in a very poignant way.

CG

Sana ftw!

Coffey

I want to read the memoir and compare.

G S

I think it was a brilliant touch, from a writing perspective, because it's so easy to get caught up in the camaraderie and the feelings of personal success and growth -- all of which is real and valid -- and forget about the very real and very dark context in which it all exist. From a narrative standpoint I think it was the perfect way to finish things off -- and certainly undermines any accusations of the show promoting or glamorizing the military.

Anniina

LOOOOVED your guys' reaction to this series!! I initially joined your Patreon because of this series, but I've decided to stay a bit longer, you guys are so amazing! Looking forward to more laughing and crying with you!🥹❤️
