'Half Man' follows the volatile, decades-long relationship between step-brothers Niall (Jamie Bell) and Ruben (Richard Gadd) as they navigate toxic masculinity, violence, sexuality, and trauma bonding from the 1980s to the present day.

What a great show can’t wait to see what Gadd comes up with next.

Em

seriously needed that pause during that prison scene to breathe 😭

VV

Like you said, this was fictional, but the subject matter is very much real. And using this story... safety (maybe), but relief (probably not fully)... there are now 2 kids growing up without their dad. Alby lost his husband on his wedding day to someone who also almost ended his life. Mona wasn't exactly stable... even if she did say she would stay away. So again, trauma scars left behind for the rest of their lives.

wren

Adam continuously hovering over the pause button at the end was so me. it’s so hard to watch

I don't know if you've watched Baby Reindeer but the series is based on Richard Gadd's life where you can see lots of similarities to this show. Richard immediately came to my mind when you mentioned this must be someone's experience. I definitely recommend watching Baby Reindeer and I would love to see your reactions to it.

the lines were constantly blurred with homoeroticism and SA between them, I feel like it was because that was the only way Ruben knew how to be close with someone due to his trauma

It was not the ending I wanted.. but an ending that kind of made the whole toxic relationship between the two of them make sense. I hated the ambiguous ending at first. Like.. did Ruben die from the stab wound? Did he bleed out and let it happen? Or did he cause his own demise after killing Niall? After sitting with it and rewatching it with you guys here: I feel like it either ---- 1.) showed that they were both codependent and that although this was expressed in different ways from both Niall and Ruben: they couldn't live without one another. And so Ruben decided to end his own life too. A perfect metaphor for how Ruben lived. Always wanting to remain in control, up until his very end. And ending his own life because the one person he could always control was no longer living.. Or ---- 2.) Ruben simply bled out from the wound given to him by Niall and was truly apathetic to taking another life / his angry violent aggression, and the prospect of spending the rest of his life in prison. He just accepted whatever would happen would happen, and didn't care about the consequences. He just happened to bleed out and die. They focused their entire lives on the other and once Niall was dead, Ruben groaned apathetically and let himself either die from his wounds or inflicted further damage on himself because he truly thought of himself as being the winner in the end because he took out Niall (the one constant in his life) first... so dying after him was a win and didn't matter much in his eyes. Or perhaps he let himself die because Niall was the last constant he had after finding his girlfriend cheated and his child wasn't really his.. so there was nothing left to live for after the revenge on Niall was done. Crazy series. The acting in this last episode especially in the prison scene toward the end was INSANE.

IM ACTUALLY DYING LAUGHING BC OF ADAM his reaction is real asf tho

Bradam Reacts

they couldn’t even LIVE without each other and rueben didn’t even WANT to after niall died 😭 you’re so right.

Bradam Reacts

i don’t blame him at all 😭😭 but i NEEEDED MY PAIN TO EENNNDDDD

Bradam Reacts

rueben just left trauma in his wake! no matter how important the moment, how important the person was to him, it didn’t matter

Bradam Reacts

gadd one upping himself again would be DEADLY 😭

Elia

Yess they definitely should watch that one too

K8kat

This was my first introduction to Gadd (I have not watched Baby Reindeer or any other previous works) but this interview was so jarring to watch seeing just how different he is from his character as Rueben! And his message and story about himself that translated to the characters in different ways was so amazing to see. Seeing Gadd as himself vs. his character had me GAGGED. What a great actor holy hell. https://youtu.be/EQXyQCL3D3U?si=IpSXBtyaJAyoDHy9

K8kat

and I do love seeing that he really did have intention with the ending of the series being so up for interpretation, to ignite a conversation and let viewers decide on their own ideas of how the story ended. Without a clear, finite ending. I think that's so cool! https://youtu.be/AhoFHXjPxR0?si=fEYyLXem1yhN4uPL

Geo

Yeah I couldn't continue it. A lot of the other shows we watch together are cringe, but this one was truly brushing my trauma. Have to be in a better place to continue it.

wren

i don’t think it’s kind to call what we watch cringe. it’s fine if it’s not to your taste but i find that a bit rude

Bradam Reacts

i think they’re using the word “cringe” as a physical reaction to the media being hard to watch- not in the “awkward ‘millennial’” terminology! because the show does make us all cringe. but the show isn’t “cringy” per se!

wren

i hope that’s why. i’ve been conditioned to respond negatively to that word. apologies if so!

Katie 🌸

Thank God y’all posted this because I needed to know what happened next, but I refuse to watch it alone. Too scary!

Geo

I mean a lot of the behaviors and moments in shows we watch here have been described in conversations as "cringe.". And most of it is definitely to my taste, just uncomfortable to watch at times. This one, for now, is impossible for me to watch.

wren

that i completely understand. this show is very difficult to stomach at times. sorry for misunderstanding!

Geo

When I am less susceptible to my own past. I will try this show again

Rebekah

i was with adam when he needed the show paused i COULD NOT WATCH omg 😭 but this show as uncomfortable as it sometimes was, was brilliant and i'm so glad i had you guys to watch it with, i would not have survived it otherwise. your discussion afterwards was so interesting too, i love when you guys deep dive on what you've watched, it almost feels like a little wrap up podcast at the end which i love. anyway fuck toxic masculinity and the patriarchy, and long live interesting and creative media.

Mama Pam

So. Reaction videos are my hobby. My husband usually keeps his distance while I watch them, but he happened to be in the room near the end of this one when Adam had to stop watching. 😂 I think he understands now why I like reaction videos. That was so great 😂 Anyway, I really enjoy your commentary! And congrats for surviving to the end of Half Man. 🫶 It's an excellent show, and so tragic. I think it deserves some awards. btw, the other show you're talking about, around 1hr33m or so, is "Adolescence" and it is phenomenal. I highly highly recommend it.

Kaylee

Okay so at the end when we see Niall’s body for the last time, is that cum on his Kilt from Ruben climaxing while he was killing Niall? That’s what I thought on my first watch but want to know if anyone else noticed it???

DSJ.

tbh they were both the villains
