Yesterday I got access to the DSP of the UBoom X and created a very quick setting with just 5 filters which already sounded better than the Stormbox Blast. I didn’t do any measurements but adjusted by ear to get something more satisfying than with the default settings from Earfun. The bass can be pushed quite a lot down below 40hz, but keep in mind that this was just a quick first adjustment without any optimisation for high levels thus the limiter is still very simple and will create distortion at high levels which I will need to take care of later. I could optimise the limiter for each single volume step with the UBoom L but I haven’t found this option for the UBoom X yet. Right now I am experimenting with getting a decent basic tuning, as the DSP also supports some stereo enhancing that I am fooling around with as well to check how much I can add without making the music sound artificial but achieving some nice stereo width.

From what I have discussed with Earfun they want to release it with their own tuning and add my settings as presets selectable from the app just like with the Free Pro 3. I am not sure about all details as we haven’t discussed anything yet, but so far I think there is really potential to squeeze out something decent out of this speaker as the hardware seems really solid and could maybe even compete against the JBL Boombox or Harman Kardon go+play.

My plan is to release 2 settings with one being tuned rather neutral but with bass as deep as possible, the other one more suitable for outdoor use with a stronger bass boost and more loudness overall. I am not sure if Earfun will approve this, but my plan is to disable any additional EQ with my settings to not come into any problems with distortion if someone has the idea to boost bass even more. I want my settings to be optimised in such a way that they will offer usable and clean results for all levels including dynamic bass adjustment for low levels and the already mentioned stereo enhancing which so far I really liked.

The advantages the UBoom X has over the Stormbox Blast: it is 1kg lighter, a bit smaller and is charged by USB-C. If I manage to squeeze out a similar loudness and bass at high levels, it should easily outperform the Blast in all regards as I will try to optimise my settings to really satisfy my own needs and create something better than the othes. As Earfun is very greedy I am not doing this for money, but simply to satisfy my own needs and hopefully demonstrate that good sound doesn’t need to be expensive or come from big popular companies.

So stay tuned for more, I may prepare some first video soon when I am allowed to.

Ahh this could be my next speaker purchase especially if those EQ options are in place. I never understood why defaults are really quite appalling sound quality. My brother got Tronsmart t6 plus couple weeks ago and the default sound is mediocre and thin and like some radio sound quality but if you press their 3 option EQ button it's pretty impressive and really jumps a major sound quality step like rich bass , better vocals, instruments clearer... And it's a £28.00 speaker (think was £60.00 when released). Not bad as 40watts so pretty decent and 360 is well balanced once you press those eq settings. But I feel you shouldn't even have to press button for best sound. Best sound should be there and then audiophile sounds should be your other options. I love the volume wheel on his speaker too.. like a 1980s vibe.

Wonder how the sound dispersion is? Realize it's a WIP.

I think it would be better if it enable the EQ feature, meanwhile using your EQ as the preset. IMO I think if there are distortions after EQ, it wouldn't be a big deal as long as user can undo try other eq. I saw many complaining uboom L has no app, too bright, no eq for different favor, and yeah for me sometimes I want more bass from the outdoor mode but then the treble is too hot for me when listening on-axis, would love to see if Uboom X slove those problem.

The outdoor mode was never meant for on axis nearfield listening but rather putting the speaker at the ground or in some backpack, on a bike etc. Earfun had no budget for developing an app etc and allegedly it was a loss product as sales didn’t meet expectations.

wow, you got a developer pc tool from them to tune the dsp? thats awesome

Hope this will as good as the UBoom L for low volume listening. Do you have influence on the bluetooth volume steps?
