I spent some days tweaking my settings for the upcoming custom firmware and noticed that recent units definitely differ from my original unit that was used for the initial tuning.

Below you can see a measurement (with indoor) done from listening position like shown in the photo and averaged over a broader listening window. In black my original unit and in red a recent unit I just bought. Also my other 2 units I got after production started sound more or less like the current unit.

You can see that there is a bigger drop between 2-4khz with a higher raise towards 5khz than on my original unit, which makes the result of my initial tuning sound a bit off. I managed to correct this somehow and flatten this area out better, but it’s quite tricky because this range is continuously changing depending on listening distance and angle. That’s why my original tuning had a slight drop here as well because otherwise this range may became too pronounced when listened off axis. Below a measurement with the corrected response in black.

I had already shot a short video showing the result but actually I was not satisfied and started a new approach with different filters which should give an even smoother sound. I will nevertheless post this video for the higher tiers but will shoot a new one once I am satisfied.

Like mentioned this area is prone to permanent change, I am not sure if it is because of the crossover or weak acoustic design but it may measure different in other rooms and positions therefore it’s important to correct for the crucial frequencies which may become dominant from various positions and not just for some single measurement. Even though my latest setting may measure similarly to the one shown here at this particular position it may still sound different as I am correcting with different filters now. It takes some time to get really convincing results therefore I will spend more hours to listen carefully. Below you can see the corrected response compared to the go+play 3 in blue.

Biggest difference is more bass boost for the Harman Kardon and slightly less upper treble which would change when measured more aligned with the tweeters. The Copenhagen 2.0 which you can see in green below measures really weird with some strong drop towards treble and stronger emphasis of mids. I will post a new video as soon as I have some satisfying results, I just need to do more tests. So stay tuned for more…

I don’t know, my settings shouldn’t be changed at all

Are you listening to the unit and capturing sound while it is on a speaker stand/at ear level like showing in the picture? I am going to go out on a limb and assume most people (myself included) do not do such a thing with their Bluetooth speakers and just place them on various tables (kitchen, dining, coffee) and counters (kitchen, bathroom) and be walking around. Therefore, the unit will always be far below our ear levels and will influence sound.

oluvsgadgets

No I did measurements in various locations and rooms but in the end the response should always be most neutral on axis, although still usable off axis, therefore already indoor has some slight treble boost, but I will try to optimise this more and maybe tune it brighter to begin with. I just tried to stay as close to neutral as possible.

Would it be possible to have desktop mode with less bass? It can sometimes be too much. Depending on the track. At least for me, I really like it otherwise.

oluvsgadgets

Sure, I just thought most preferred indoor+ and wanted to tune it similar, otherwise they would complain it had no bass etc. Before settling for the final settings I may do some sort of survey and ask what the majority prefers.

Marioragcurtain

That 2-4 khz area is exactly where i always thought it was lacking a little bit. Especialy on lower volumes vocals can sound a little muffled. The 3 units i bought in november-december last year sound and measure exactly the same. Im really looking forward to this correction!

I would maybe want to lower bass just a little for desktop mode. Maybe bass response somewhere in between indoor and indoor+ ? I still like the kick from indoor+, and I sometimes use indoor+ outdoors, when I have the speaker on the edge of a table. And also, maybe refine the treble response of desktop mode? To me there's some weird honkiness or maybe muddiness when listening off-axis.

oluvsgadgets

The offaxis issues mainly come from the stereo enhancing, I will take a deeper look into it, but treble isn’t changed much for desktop compared to indoor+. It will take a while to analyse the sound what’s happening with the reflections of some boundary and as the tweeters are rather close to that it will be hard to get this completely smooth, there is always some compromise.

oluvsgadgets

Yes the new unit I just bought sounds about the same like the production units Earfun sent me in the beginning, but my very first unit which was used for tuning definitely sounds different.

Indoor is definitely my preferred mode and what I use almost always. It has the right balance of sounding natural while being more immersive, spacious, and engaging than Studio. I think Studio has a "denser", more intimate midrange somehow and sometimes I'll use it for certain tracks. But overall I end up missing the stereo enhancement and bass of Indoor. Indoor+ can be fun sometimes but it usually ends up sounding a bit too unnatural in the treble emphasis for me with bass that can be a bit too much. Although as a low volume "loudness" mode, it is kind of nice. Studio, Indoor, and Indoor+ are pretty much the only modes I ever use with Indoor being used almost always, followed by Studio sometimes, and Indoor+ less still (although as I type this I'm trying it out more at low volumes and it's quite nice). A few times I've used Ground 0 on the floor but not facing straight up. Rather, I tilt the speaker back so it's only resting on its rear 2 rubber feet, so the speaker is angled up a bit. Even though Ground 0 wasn't designed to be used this way, I find that it does some impressive things.. I'm able to have it on the floor while having much more midrange clarity compared to all the other modes. It makes me think it'd be cool to re-tune Ground 0 to be optimized for ground/floor use but not facing directly upwards like how it's tuned now. I feel like not many people would use the speaker facing directly up but I could be wrong?.... What exactly is the speaker doing with stereo enhancement, Oluv? I find it to be a really nice effect and now don't want any bluetooth speaker without it. I feel like it really brings the most out of a single unit type speaker, allowing it to be more immersive and spacious while compact. Are other brands doing anything similar or is this an "Oluv special"? I find the effect can be quite room dependent and also seems to improve the more space I leave around the speaker without other objects to interfere. Depending on the track and my room I'll hear sounds extending up to 1-1.5 meters beyond each side. There's even a sense soundstage depth and a bit of layering. It's quite impressive. Also, I've never heard the Uboom X in TWS as I only have one unit.. but you were saying it seems a bit bassier/boomier in TWS mode right? Perhaps you could re-tune it to be more neutral in TWS? I'd love one day to have some sort of Oluv tuned TWS "mini monitors" of some sort.. or they could be wired but just a real stereo pair of bookshelf/monitor speakers. From the first Free Pro Oluv, to the Free Pro 2 with your reference tune, and now the Uboom X, I feel your tuning makes for a cohesive, natural, smooth sound that won't necessarily blow you away at first but seems to get under your skin (in a good way) over time and ends up becoming a go-to choice time and time again. My Free Pro 2 have been my reference for a few years now and most other earphones I try sound unnatural in comparison. They are what I use to judge all sound demos. I bought another pair of Free Pro 2 so I could have a spare set but even with your same tuning, there was enough unit variation that it just sounded off and I couldn't listen to it. I've also tried 2 different Uboom L but kept having buggy issues. I remember the midrange being quite natural but it felt like the lack of tweeters just never gave me the resolution, air, immersiveness or something that I wanted... Anyway, excited for what you have coming in the future! UPDATE: Listened to Studio some more and it's an EQ I want to keep. I like it for some very vocal-focused or more intimately recorded music. The mids feel denser and more meaty. Less low bass but seemingly more tactile mid/upper bass or something... Strings are more "plucky". Also because of the lighter bass, I like it for late night listening when I don't want to disturb the neighbors while still turning it up a bit.. Or sometimes I just want a very flat response. I like that it's like a "KH80 Mode" :)

EJ102

Oh, I didn't realize that. Going to give it a try. Survey would be interesting.

Daniel Sripuntanagoon

I would love a dedicated TWS EQ with no stereo enhancement if possible. Thank you :)

M K

I bought one unit in october of last year and am now planing on buying a second one to use in TWS mode. Will they still perform identical or is the response possibly gonna differ? Also I love the desktop mode (it is by far my most used mode) and don't think that it should get less bass in you next firmware revision (at least for a single speaker). Will the new Firmware be included for those, who bought your old custom firmware?

Marioragcurtain

Probably not. I bought 5 of them for myself and friends and they all seem to be more or less identical. I was actualy surprised how little unit variation there is compared to some other speakers i had multiple off.

Jan Christmeier

oh yes. One Indoor and one Indoor+ That would be so awesome

oluvsgadgets

I cannot add any further modes, Earfun doesn’t let me

DominikReviews

Yeah differences between units is minimal, that's quite amazing for that price

Robert Mcintosh

Will you be looking at making a profile for the new Sony XM6 with the new 10 band EQ? Would gladly purchase that if you are happy with it.

oluvsgadgets

I thought about trying the B&W PX7 S3 first as it’s hyped all over everywhere

Robert Mcintosh

Interesting. looking forward to seeing that. I only ask about the XM6 because I remember you saying that the XM5 was not horrible. Going from a 5 band to now a 10 band makes me think something nice might be possible.

oluvsgadgets

Is the XM6 already out? Maybe I should check out this one first

Robert Mcintosh

It looks like reviewers' embargos lifted today, and many sites have it available to order.

Luka Bošnjak

There are some measurements on ShortCircuit for the XM6...

Daniel Sripuntanagoon

how about a custom firmware just for TWS. I would gladly sacrifice boom XXX and ground zero modes for indoor TWS and outdoor TWS :) I’m just dreaming
