I finally found some time to try out my 950 firmware with 2 units playing in stereo compared to a single unit with 949 firmware and my old home speakers which I had bought back in the 90s and used them as my main speakers for many years.

950 firmware is optimised for TWS use to get a more natural balance closer to the sound of 2 neutral speakers when 2 Uboom X are connected for stereo, unlike 048 and 949 where a single Uboom X is tuned to sound more similar to a stereo setup. Without additional adjustment the balance will change with 2 speakers playing compared to a single speaker with a more bassy sound with less clarity especially when listening indoors.

Unfortunately there is no way to directly tune 2 speakers connected for stereo, therefore I had to base my adjustments on measurements done with 2 units and then prepare a new firmware with the necessary corrections applied.

I think the result is pretty convincing. IMO 2 UBoom X in stereo sound way more natural than my old "Hifi"-speakers, 2 UBoom X with 950 sound pretty similar to a single unit with 949. Although the result could be probably improved even more but due to the strong interference between 2 tweeters being so close to each other, you can only create some average response which will change a lot depending on the listening position. Because of this I would suggest to place the speakers upright for TWS use if you intend to get a more constant sound within your listening window and then adjust your listening height and try to remain more or less constant.

Here you can find the playlist with all tracks used in the video so that you can compare my recording of the speakers to the original music to get a better idea about the actual rendering.

After several weeks of use I am very happy with the 950 TWS firmware. My new favorite outdoor mode is BoomXXX for use around the backyard swimming pool to get the extra bass punch. The connection is generally stable in most modes. If I am in an area with heavy WiFi traffic causing signal dropouts I switch to Indoor+ mode and the connection becomes solid. Thank you for all your hard work, Oluv! I will try your vertical listening suggestion to avoid comb filtering and phase cancellation sound artifacts from the tweeters. Cheers!

These sound so magnificent for such a relatively inexpensive/portable speaker, it blows my mind! PEOPLE -- if you haven't purchased Oluv's firmware (whether with a single UBoom X or in TWS), do yourself a favor and buy it. The installation is pretty simple, and the quality is completely worth the price. You aren't owed anything, just put up the relatively little money and enjoy!

I would love to get one but its sold out in Sweden.. Oluv have you had the chance to check out the soundcore boom 3i?

Not in person, but Dominik reviews thinks it’s crappy

048 Studio sounds quite similar to my Yamaha HS8, but needs more bass. It's a common misconception that studio monitors should be completely flat — they're only flat in an anechoic chamber, most studios have an in-room response with a 6dB bass shelf. 949 Outdoor+ has bass closer to the Yamaha, and I really appreciate the dynamic tuning at different volume levels, but has too much treble. I see that you have an older version of 048 that had more bass on Studio - would it be possible to throw that in the pack?

Incredible low end compared to those big azz old speakers

Hi Oluv, when you are done testing, do you think you could do a firmware where you combine like 3 of the EQ settings optimized for stereo TWS and 4 optimized for mono use into a single firmware? So if you have 2 or more speakers, you can switch between just using one of them but also TWS without having to flash the firmware everytime. Or do you recommend a specific firmware that already exists for that usecase? Thanks in advance

oluvsgadgets

I cannot do any further firmwares. My contact to Earfun is dead.

Driano

Oh damn thats unfortunate. Which firmware would you suggest then for both tws and mono?

invincibo

Hi Oluv, will 049 and 050 firmware available in the future?, or the current firmware pack (039, 048, 949, 950) is the final version already? Thanks.

oluvsgadgets

048 should be fine in most cases but 949 is refined more for low levels and has desktop and ground mode

Driano

Thank you! Gonna buy the pack soon

oluvsgadgets

All are final, I cannot do any further changes anymore.

oluvsgadgets

The bass response for studio is matched to the KH80 and should be pretty flat down to 40hz, outdoor+ has a strong bass boost and is far from flat

I don't think it's okay to insult someone just because they express their opinion, it shows your character, it's a shame I thought more of you

oluvsgadgets

I had blocked him already and he came back to complain again. And who are you btw?

Lukas

But to call him an asshole right away is simply not okay

oluvsgadgets

It’s not what you say but how you say it and still not sure about your problem.

Thanks Oluv for all your time investment. I hope you enjoyed the process! :) I just bought the custom firmwares, but have not tried them out yet. Did I get it right?: 039 - installing that was made for the prototype and the official app will ask me to update to the current 0.46 firmware. 048 - optimized for "recent production units". (Ref: https://www.reddit.com/r/Bluetooth_Speakers/comments/1ltqjyp/custom_firmware_pack_for_the_earfun_uboom_x/ ) What does that mean? I ordered mine in October and November 2024. Would this mean official 0.46 would be a better fit as it might be 1st or 2nd batch? But 0.48 should sound better for TWS than the official firmware, right? So, if I use my speaker (having 2) for TWS and sometimes single, than probably 0.48 is the best choice? 950: Studio, Indoor and Indoor+ are adjusted. What about the other modes? (Outdoor, Ourtdoor+, Ground 0)? Are those then like 949 or 048? Out of curiousity: Did you never thought that some might use two Boom X on a Desktop for Gaming? Left and right from the laptop or so? I was impressed that you even offered a special mode for desktop. Until now I just lived with the different sound because of the table... I could not listen to the above video yet, but if one 949 sounds similar to 2 speakers with 950 - what is the verdict here? Sounds the same, but the sound tracking (left-right) using two physical speakers works better? What is your distance between the two speakers? So in smaller rooms or if not having more than x meters between the speakers (outdoors), than probably one Boom X with 949 makes more sense than using two? I remember that for the Boom L you said that TWS is really good and an improvement. (Hopefully, I remember correct.) What is the verdict here for the Boom X? No TWS needed? Do I remember correctly, that you had a custom Boom L firmware, too? Out of curiousity: Did you pair a Boom X and L already? For me the sound was very weird then. Makes only sense for multi room sound in different rooms.
