Actually the Airpods Max wouldn't be that bad, if Apple allowed for a more reasonable control about the sound. With headphone accomodations the sound somehow improves, but it's too much of everything and seems to add some additional dynamics effect to the sound. With default setting it's simply way too bassy and misses lot of mids which makes them appear muddy despite the treble being quite boosted, while activating headphone accommodation makes the sound too artificial sounding for me. What I definitely love is ANC and transparency mode, which unfortunately I both cannot achieve with the same level for the NH1, but I think soundwise the NH1n should offer a way more serious listening experience to those who actually care about sound.

Please apologize some occasional clipping at the very end, but due to the enclosed air volume with closed headphones there is lots of infranoise rumble captured which I cannot quite avoid.

Update: Due to some discussion regarding the headphone accommodations which definitely have a huge impact on the overall perceived response I added some measurements for the Airpods Max with all settings compensated for the NH1n studio setting:

The most balanced setting would be either "balanced strong" or "vocal slight" which still has too much bass:

Headphone Accommodations dont really change the frequency response in any crazy way, its just a compressor level

DominikReviews

They change the perceived response overall but on regular measurement done by sine sweep wont show that huge change

oluvsgadgets

Sine sweeps do not represent the real frequency response at all.

DominikReviews

of course, sine is only useful for finding resonances

Activating accommodations gives you a high shelf above 2khz with more than 3db and some bass reduction as well. Changing from slight to moderate will add another 3db already below 1khz with additional bass reduction, while strong reduces treble again.

DominikReviews

to do that they just use multiband compressor

If Apple would just just add a simple 5 or better 10 band EQ... Same with the AirPods Pro 3. Overwhelming bass and boosted treble, balanced mids (but recessed). Great ANC and transparency mode as well. Coping with Spotify atm.

“These iPhone Settings are RUINING Your AirPods' Sound” By “The Headphone Show” does a great job of explaining “Headphone Accommodations”. Anyways… I’m excited for the NH1n!

Unfortunately, many people like that huge amount of bass. If they'd just let us eq they could sound great. I think my Q30 sound better with your eq than these Airpods.

oluvsgadgets

I also preferred the Q30 over the AirPods Max

Lol, nice "cups"... 🤣

I still prefer the NH1n in the mids and highs, but the AirPods move me in the bass department. The bass is a really big factor in making you jam and become immersed in music (in my opinion there's a good way to integrate the bass without compromising the rest of the frequencies). But anyway, the goal here is to have a neutral headphone, and the NH1n have the appropriate response.

Oluv has already denoted that NH1n will have a bassier mode present

When switching from AirPods, the sound seems too simple, lacking in drive. This extra bass boost definitely adds a little extra flavor to the overall listening experience.

Like I said you are hearing a completely flat sound against a boosted one. It’s just a matter of what you are used to.

Hi Oluv, At First: happy Christmas. Would you give the AirPods Max another try with following setup? Custom Audio Setup => Balanced Tone (set to slight NOT Moderate / Strong) AND in Music => reduce Bass I am curious, how it would compare / sound. Maybe there is another difference in Sound by Connection. Did you tried to Connect the AirPods Max by USB-C with the iPhone? It will establish a digital Connection for better (true) Data-Transfer (without bluetooth) Nice Greetz Christian

Headphone Accommodations have too much impact on overall dynamics, it starts sounding fake if you use them. I won’t buy it again, it’s simply not worth the money.
