Iliked the Stockwell II quite a lot, unfortunately it died in the meantime but hopefully we can get it alive again with a new battery. But now the Stockwell III is finally out, so let's check if it is any better than the old one...

I spent $180 to buy the Stockwell 3, and the lack of aptX transmission is a huge disappointment for me. Perhaps it's for cost reasons, I don't know. As for the sound, it doesn't sound like Marshall's traditional style. Compared to the second generation, it's definitely louder; the second generation's 70 persent is roughly equivalent to the third generation's 50 present. However, after many attempts, I found that the third generation lacks some high and ultra-high frequencies, and the EQ changes are minimal. I've had the speakers for a month and repeatedly adjusted them, but I haven't found a suitable EQ or tuning method.

Your son seems to be a tech wizard! Waiting for your test against the old speaker. I had the chance to test Stockwell III versus II last week. For some reason I was quite sceptic. Unfortunately I was right. 1. Highs are somehow missing in "normal" setting. So I use the "Treble" rotary knob (LEDs) at position 8/10. Plus in app EQ I set the 6.25 kHz slider at ~75%. Strange top frequency. I read somewhere other new Marshalls have more bands. On top of that in my Asus ROG Phone 8 Pro I have already set EQ 15 kHz to +2; 2. Mids seem to be fine. But not sure. I set the app EQ 1 kHz = 25% and 2.5 kHz = 50%. Plus in my Asus AudioWizard 480 Hz = -1, 960 Hz = 0; 1.9 kHz = -1; 3. Bass is the most weird area. I feel some strange pressure on my ears, like there is some nasty steep resonance peak (need to check exactly - I guess 70-75 Hz). Also some frequency cancellation or dephasing. Which could be on mids and treble as well - can't say. I feel long listening to be exhausting to my ears. Which is never the case with Stockwell II. I set the "Bass" rorary knob at 4/10. In app EQ I set: 160 Hz = 50% and 400 Hz = 10%. Maybe you can play with other bands below 100 Hz at your device EQ if you have such + suppress 160 Hz in app. I have 60 Hz = +2; 120 Hz = -1; 240 Hz = -1 in Asus AudioWizard. 4. But the "Soundstage" app setting saved it from returning back for me. Definitely. Just put it to the far right +3. You will get a spacious sound that is... well, halfway close to Marshall II "bubble". Don't forget to boost the highs. Also you get the weird boomy bass reduced a bit. 5. What I haven't played with - the corner and wall placement setting. I set this in the beginning and never tuned against other EQs. All in all - the speaker issues are manageable but cannot be neutralized. So one should decide whether louder sound (way louder), changeable battery, nicer looks and app control can win.

The Stockwell II battery hasn’t arrived in time. I will be back end of next week so hopefully can compare these 2 by then, but I wouldn’t say the Stockwell II to be that loud it was about the loudness of the sEARius with outdoor mode while having even less bass punch I would say maybe with more upper bass instead. While I really liked the Stockwell II back then (haven’t heard it for longer as it’s already dead for some years) the Stockwell III didn’t impress me at all.

As you still have the Stockwell III it maybe would also be interesting to compare it against Mediamarkts own Brand Copy of it (PeaQ iconic Vibe 5/PeaQ PPA 540-RW). Maybe they did a better Job than Marshall. The PeaQ also hits your Price Point way better as here in Germany you can get it for 80€.

Ist der Akku vom Stockwell 2 schon angekommen? Bin gespannt auf den Vergleich 🙂 Wird der Vergleich noch kommen?
