I recorded this with my broken mics and thank godness it still turned out quite OK. I hope I can manage another headphone video with these before sending my mics away. As I want to make another video about the Apple Airpods Max showing some special features like importing personal audiogram to improve the sound and also spatial audio.

So stay tuned...

Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 - the worst?

I am again shocked how bad these highly rated Bose headphones actually sound compared to the much cheaper Anker Soundcore Life Q30 and the way more premium Apple Airpods Max. If you are on a tight budget get the Anker and use my user EQ to make it one of the best sounding ANC headphones on the market right now: https://www.patreon.com/posts/44927381 Anker Soundcore Life Q30 on amazon: https://amzn.to/3lJZ7JU

What a muddy sound from the Bose. I like gadgets that have outstanding quality in terms of the materials. So I would pay higher prices for the headphone I fell in love with. But Apple is not my thing and soundwise there is to little gap to the Anker for paying so much more. The Anker is the overall winner and the Bose is really horrible.

Anker sound good but looks cheap. I wish Apple would make a cheaper Max-es, maybe not as premium, but with the same electronics. I'm surprised they didn't go for AirPlay 2 for connection to the AirPods Max when WiFi is available.

oluvsgadgets

Wi-Fi drains battery way more. I once made a test streaming over Airplay vs Bluetooth from my phone and with Airplay battery drained way faster. Maybe I can find my values from back then but I think it was like factor 4...

I have the bose quitecomfort 35 ii And they don't sound like the 700 I'm really shocked after hearing the 700 they are bad i thought that they way better then my quitecomfort 35 ii and i think it's the opposite

Alex Cirovic

That's true, but if you're at home charging is readily available. It would be an interesting differentiator against Sony's LDAC codec. Obviously the codec alone can't make the headphone sound better. but it would be satisfy the audiophile OCD to stream FLAC level resolution without Bluetooth compression.

Alex Cirovic

You buy Bose for the noise cancelling, and that works quite well. Nobody does critical audio listening on the airplane. Most of the time you're watching movies from the on-board entertainment system.

Stanislav Baranec

It’s ridiculous sounding. Sounds to me like not even being 44.1khz / 16bit resolution, or like if the bitrate of sound stream is very low. I don’t know what do these guys drink there 🙈

Alex Cirovic

It's not 44.1/16, it's 256kbps AAC like with other Bluetooth headsets. Still that didn't stop Anker and Apple from sounding better.

Stanislav Baranec

I don’t want to offend you but you either don’t know what is the difference between bitrate of sound stream and resolution / sampling rate of PĆM wave, or you didn’t understand my point. In short - even 22050 hz / 8bit PCM wave can be encoded into 256kbps stream , if you would want it to, even though it wouldn’t make any sense to do so and any functional psychoacoustic model wouldn’t proceed like this. My point was, that the Bose are literally horrible with higher frequency spectrum resolution, but have pretty good lower frequencies, which is often a case with low resolution encoded wave streams. I don’t assume on this being a premise for the sound issues encountered with it, but also it doesn’t look like a problem of single unit. Could be a problem of compatibility issue with AAC codec under iOS, but I also doubt it. In any case, a quick try on an Android device or some other gear where different codec for bluetooth transfer is used would give us an answer.

I haven't tested them that extensively, because my first impression of the sound was that bad, but I felt the same way you just described, playing from an android device, although to be honest I never checked which codec it defaulted to. To me if I remember correctly, it just sounded compressed, for the lack of a better word. I actually feel like they sounded worse in reallity than they do in Oluvs recording.

Stanislav Baranec

Alrighty.... then it’s an all around piece of crap. No denial. Period 😂

Alex Cirovic

Not offended at all. I understood that you meant uncompressed 44.1/16. I had hands on experience with Bose for a month, used it mainly when travelling and commuting. Loved the noise cancelling, but always thought that the sound is average. It didn't bother me that much on the train, as it was background music I listened while working.

Alex Cirovic

It was probably SBC, since Bose only supports SBC and AAC.

אורי מלכה

And because they sre really comfortable 224 g that's really lightweight and by the way the noise cancelling is not that good actually but it's there

quandale

Which application do you use for equalizing the headphones 700 ?

DS _89

Is there any possibility to test the Soundcore Life Q30 against the Bose QC35 II? didn‘t feel that they sound so badly as the Bose 700.

oluvsgadgets

I heard the Bose in a store, and I definitely wouldn’t spend my money on it. It lacks detail sounds somehow veiled, it definitely not worth the money. On sound alone the Q30 beats it hands down

oluvsgadgets

The Bose app has just some bass treble control but you cannot really change the sound for the better

Mister 13

Like i said bose does nothing special nowadays, back then they designed some beast : companion serie, the sounddock portable and sounddock 10 whose were impressive by their clarity and power for their size then after that they became worse with muddied speakers (soundtouch and homespeaker series) and crappy headphones A week ago i tried all of them and even the SoundTouch series (20 and 30) whose has the same core are more muffled than sounddock series (portable and 10), i tried older headphones like the quietcomfort 15 and it sounds a bit more open than the newer 700 So no evolution at all in sound except some features

Alex

Could you post a playlist from this video please?

oluvsgadgets

Which song are you interested in? I have no playlist for this and many tracks are some obscure tracks I found somewhere

I had both the QC35 II and then had to switch to the BOSE 700. Reason is, my QC35 got stolen and the 700s where included for free with the Pixel 6 phone. Once I started up the 700s I was surprised that even though their Noise Cancelling subjectively improved, the sound was weirdly muddy. This is when I started using an EQ on them, Wavelet on the Phone and Peace on the PC. This improved the sound substantially. With the default EQ by Wavelet you can see that a lot of after EQ-ing was needed. At this stage they are usuable and I keep them for their ANC capability as I fly a lot in aircrafts, use them in my cabriolet on highways etc. One other thing I have found is that the call quality in noisy places is drastically worse with the 700s compared to the QC35s and Im just not sure how they went down in terms of quality. I always used to talk with my girlfriend or make calls while commuting but this is now nearly impossible with the 700s. Must add that my car is probably one of the loudest you can find. Also have Moondrop Starfields and those need nearly no EQ and sound much better than the 700s in my opinion too. EDIT: I have downloaded the App Wavelet to my Android which features good Equalizer presets built into the app. Have to enter "legacy mode" to use Bluetooth headphones. Bose 700s sound alright now, I can't complain anymore about them thinking that I got them with my phone at no extra cost basically.
