I tried making something usable out of this Austrian crap. Holy shit what were those morons responsible for the sound thinking? But it seems to be their "house sound" obviously when looking at the other junk from them, measured by Oratory1990: https://headphonedatabase.com/oratory/headphones?ids=216

On top a measurement with the original tuning (are they all deaf?), below with some EQ adjustments. I used 10 filters, would have needed more to make it sound even smoother, but if you use a Qudelix or other devices with PEQs, 10 bands are usually the limit. It sounds already way way better than the original tuning, which I simply cannot understand, maybe too much Austrian beer damaged their ears. I would be ashamed releasing a product like that. Also a strong imbalance between left and right is noticable which makes equalizing even harder.

Attachments don't seem to work right now, so here the values for EqualizerAPO and I also uploaded a screenshot for Qudelix, which needs slightly adjusted values for a similar result:

Filter: ON PK Fc 50 Hz Gain 2 dB Q 1

Filter: ON PK Fc 80 Hz Gain -3 dB Q 1

Filter: ON PK Fc 300 Hz Gain 5.5 dB Q 0.5

Filter: ON PK Fc 950 Hz Gain -3.7 dB Q 2

Filter: ON PK Fc 1850 Hz Gain 8 dB Q 2.5

Filter: ON PK Fc 2800 Hz Gain -8 dB Q 4

Filter: ON PK Fc 5500 Hz Gain -12.3 dB Q 5

Filter: ON PK Fc 10000 Hz Gain -4 dB Q 4

Filter: ON PK Fc 11850 Hz Gain -8.5 dB Q 8

Filter: ON PK Fc 13000 Hz Gain -6.5 dB Q 3

Minus 12.3 dB on EQ adjustment, New record, isn‘t it? 😋

I reckon they don't care for how natural the tuning sound, but they either want to impress people who have a tough time telling whether the sound is close to natural with clarity.

oluvsgadgets

it's not clarity, it is ear damaging harshness

I just checked their website. It appears they also market it as a monitoring headphones. FR like that seems to be a thing for monitoring headphones as well. I'm not quite sure whether the goal is to make sure vocals carry over ambient sounds at all cost, or something else, but there's likely a reason for it.

No theme reviews on youtube had an interview with ceo Martin Seidl from Austrian Audio. Explaining the tuning of these headphones..

oluvsgadgets

And what was his excuse? Such a sound is unacceptable.

Austrian Audio is famous for perhaps the worst tuning in it's price range. It's not on purpose, but some accident and they needed to release them. Maybe they were running out if money. The 300€ Hi-X55 is the worst I've heard (though this seems even worse). Interestingly I tried the X65 yesterday and it was pretty fine. Not worth 350€ by any means, but they were listenable. I wonder if they just closed the cup if an X65 to make the X55 without any effort to balance the tuning.

Is next review going to be about the legendary and great selling Grado ?

markus intimidantus

Balony Listen to the interview.... And try to follow what he says...

Hartyewh

I find it irrelevant what the company CEO or similar spokesperson says about their product. At least the X55 I can vouch for is utter trash and there is no use case for which they can be considered even decent except for an individual with severe hearing loss at the exact frequencies. They literally make instrument disappear from a recordings.

MAK1975

The Grados are a waste of Oluv's time to review as the frequency response is so bad.

Yes. He must be afraid of giving his honest opinion and helping us as consumers.
