Lool welcome to the most debated topic in the show

“I don’t like that we can predict what’s going to happen on this show.” LMAO just wait. You guys have no clue what you’re in for after this. As for Armin’s revival, I admit that by the time it happened I was just happy to see him alive again. His death destroyed me. At that time he and Erwin were my top two characters so you can imagine how torn I was over the decision. I honestly didn’t know who was the better choice but I was still so relieved to see Armin that I didn’t care. I get Seb’s point here though and how he feels like it cheapens the impact of death on the show. I just never felt that way myself.

I think if y’all watched the last episode and this one right after, you would feel less intense about Armin’s death 😂. You guys had so much time to process it and confirm it in your minds that he was dead that it was set and you accepted it. Granted that’s about the timing we had to wait for this episode to be released when it first came out. But! That’s why we suggested y’all watch 16, 17, and 18 all together 😂

I feel like the intensity of Erwin’s speech and his talk with Levi before he died gave me enough to be okay with his death. When he talked with Levi he finally accepted that his dream wouldn’t be achieved, and also made a decision that was completelyyyy for the betterment of humanity which he’s never done before.

Man Lit

Erwin got the perfect send-off. Armin dying felt too sudden (even though that moment was great), so I wasn't too surprised he came back, also this episode overall had incredible character and thematic moments, Levi choosing Armin was well done.

NV TV Reactions

I understand why you guys aren't too satisfied with what happened with armin I was kinda the same, but when you finish the show and look back on it. It will all add up. The way this episode was written made up for it too because it showed the values both characters have and it led up to this great debate of who should be brought back. At the end of the day this show is f'ing amazing, can't wait for the next episodes!

The tension between the Erwin and Armin choice is palpable no matter how you look at it. For people that want them both to live, it sucks having to choose one. Especially with how much Armin has been written as a mirror for Erwin, albeit younger and more optimistic. For people that think one of them should've died prior to the choice, the tension could come in accepting that given the circumstances the one they want to live is not the best choice, or the frustration that the choice has to be made at all when both characters were sent off already. It's very difficult I think to write a massive choice like this, and having re-watched the show multiple times I've come to appreciate this episode in spite of its tensions. You don't know who to pick. You're pissed off because of how the characters were sent off. You're frustrated that there weren't more options because the titans kept getting away. It feels like everyone has plot armor, that things aren't happening as they should. The unpredictability of AOT is staggering, I promise you. The choices that are made only get more difficult from here. This frustration you're feeling is not only valid but refreshing, because it was something I felt on my first watch through. That being said, I think this was the perfect scenario for this exact set of circumstances. This impact would only otherwise be felt by maybe a Levi vs Mikasa situation, a who gets to live between them scenario. It's only the fact that it's between Erwin, the Commander (the devil who's led thousands to their deaths for the sake of humanity and his dreams of seeing his father's theory realized) and Armin, the protege (the one who learned the meaning of sacrifice (human, mental, moral, etc.) so early on for the sake of humanity and for the realization of his own dreams, seeing the sea) that this choice is so heavy. Both of them are close to reaching their dreams. Both of them went out to save others. Both of them carry the weight of humanity on their shoulders. If it was going to happen, it needed to happen between Armin and Erwin.

Since watching this show, I've learned to appreciate the chaos in what feels like strictly scripted, plot armor-ey moments. Because it's the fact that Armin was suffering from fourth (fifth? sixth??) degree burns and was still alive because Bertholdt tried to "take him out quick". The fact that Erwin's insides were shredded but he was still alive in the same way he'd managed to survive after losing his arm (honestly, my theory is its sheer determination). It's the fact that Floch managed to survive the Charge, which led him to finding Erwin in the mass of bodies. It's Floch's choice to not kill him, not to save him but to drag him back into hell. It's the fact that Bertholdt (i.e. just one titan shifter) had to be the only one left behind for this to become a choice of who of the two eats him (and having it be Bertholdt, Armin's closest 104 parallel, is perfect imo). And Levi had to have had enough hope to wait those few extra seconds for Erwin to arrive. Things had to unfold in a certain way to set this scene. And in spite of how frustrating it is, you've got to appreciate that if they were going to go about it all, that Isayama at least went about it in the most effective way possible. Writing wise anyway. Humanity, I think, needed one of them to survive in order to continue its fight. It was always going to be a choice between Armin or Erwin, or no choice at all.

Sean Carroll

I’m guessing that’s a quote from seb (haven’t seen the vid yet) If that’s the case then that’s rich coming from the guy who probably has the lowest iq on the couch and has barely predicted anything in the entire show

Paul Durbin

Lol Sean relax. But fr the couch has been shit at predictions in general.

TheGrowState

I didn't feel like Erwin had an underwhelming send off, but I watched the Dub first and I actually think Erwins english VA absolutely nails his final speech in a way that makes that send off more satisfying.

Dreamknight942

Sean chiiiil don’t get snippy about it lol it’s Christmas 😝

Ben Stover

Your biggest mistake was not watching this immediately after hero. I also watched in dub the first time and Erwins speech is an amazing send off in English. Also the only plot armor is the plot armor titan Reiner

Arnold Baker

i felt the same way. but you'll see why this was necessary later

Jaycee

“I don’t like that we can’t predict this show.” Says the guys who said the beast titan was Erens dad even after they showed what he looked like 😅

Joshua Lederman

Why did you go back to the oval picture? It is less enjoyable to watch than ur YouTube :(

Sean Carroll

Erwin has greatest dying speech in anime history and Seb doesnt think it was a good enough sendoff

Sean Carroll

ok my 2 cents about this episode both as a first time viewer 4 years ago and a repeat watcher now. I know you never read our comments but hopefully you read this one 1. Erwins death has been setup since his arm was chewed off, he almost died during the government overthrow if his plan didnt work. He and levi also discussed Erwin staying home because of his injury. The signs were there so no this was not "rushed" at all. Erwin was always selfish to his dream but in the end he chose to give up on his dream and sacrifice himself for the good of humanity. There has never been a death in television for me that hits harder. I suggest checking out "a goodwin tv" who is another reactor who has a perfect explanation of the character that is Erwin and how significant his death is to the show and tv in general. 2. Armins death was the one that was rushed... but that doesnt make it bad either. There were no signs at all leading up to Armins death that he would die. He makes a last minute decision to sacrifice himself for victory. Armins death in the moment is perfect but for me is not as shattering as Erwins was. 3. I dont have a problem with your belief that Armin should have died at all, I will say though that humans can survive significant burns for a short period of time. 4. Erwins dream ends at the basement while Armins dream goes beyond and into the future. You guys did refer to this so no issue there. 5. The best part of Erwins death is that he was so close to his dream and just missed out at the last moment because he chose to give up on his dream. If we have a dream as human beings that takes us years to achieve but then have to give up on it at the last moment that takes an extreme amount of heart because at the last moment the choice is the hardest to make.

The poetic pat of Erwin's death is that he would always sacrifice the scouts to keep moving forward to his goal. (Which is why they called him a devil at the end, making the hard decisions no one else could) In the end he ended up sacrificing himself right before reaching it.

Luke Fox

Ain't no way Erwin makes one of the best speeches of all time, finally gives up on his own dream to save his comrades, and leads a badass suicide charge into the beast titan that allows Levi to take him down and that is a "shitty sendoff" Am I on an alien planet right now, I legit have never heard this take before in my life. WTF now I know y'all were definitely smoking before this with all your slap happy jokes XD

Luke Fox

In his defense the past couple of episodes he has been noticeably intoxicated on something. Dude is a jokester but holy crap he couldn't stop laughing over slap happy jokes and hallucinating stuff Corely didn't even do.

Luke Fox

-Armin existing as the only character to die and come back in the show - Seb: "No one ever stays dead in this show" - Erens mom, Erens dad, Marco, Marlo, Levi's squad, Hannes, Erwin, Kenny, Moblit, and Bertholtd rolling their eyes from beyond the grave 💀

Joseph

I think it's what the author wants to do: a heated debate. I just have a question only in my mind. If Erwin is alive, his long-held dream is fulfilled. What happens next? I have no clue.

AaroN

Exactly. A good sendoff doesn't have to be a dramatic, 10-minute long sequence before the person dies. Erwin gives up on his dream, gives an iconic speech, leads the scouts on a final suicide charge, and bites the dust.

NissanZaxima

Can you guys just watch the show ffs and bitch later?

Boxhibbit

oval is difficult to enjoy :(

Boxhibbit

btw Monkey Titan must be Erens Dad <3

Boxhibbit

oval is so hard to watch :( *cry*

Sasha

the intro got me laughing omg

Sasha

I loved Erwin but it felt right for him to die here. him and Armin have so many similarities. they both gave up on their lives and their dreams, but Armin did and does see much further ahead.

NelNel🫶🏾🤍

That’s very rude to say, u paid for the uncut and raw reaction so deal with it

Hyrelia

I definitely didn't agree watching it the first time, I thought it improved the prior episodes, because now the weight of Erwin's death is on Armin's shoulders. I think it was a genius move to essentially kill off two important characters and then say you can only save one of them.

Nessi

I think they definitely made the right choice. They needed Erwin to go as far as they are know, but Erwins Dream is like right around the corner and after that he doesn't have a plan and maybe no conviction. But Armin has so many things he wants to see and he has the drive to go further.
