Chris Moffit

I love the "Imagine going through your whole life looking like that" line coming back to be used on someone like Mulder, who is a bit of a milquetoast looking guy. Especially since I thought it was a little bit rude of Scully to say that about the alligator man in the beginning. It coming full circle to be used on a non-freak character was honestly genius. I actually like the blockhead guy quite a bit, love how odd he is and his sentiment at the end of the episode is actually pretty radical, especially for the time. The funny moments in this episode hit, the emotional moments with Lanny do as well, it's awesome! Still one of my favorite episodes of the show and there are some amazing episodes coming up, believe me! Such a fun cast of characters and a fun setting!! Love that the Conundrum only has one line at the end and it's 'must've been something I ate'. So good

Darin Morgan and Kim Manners together, you know it's gonna be good Some of this episode is handled a bit clumsily but the repeated message of "even when we join wider society, away from the sideshow, we are still treated as Other" is an good one. The "very special people" line, for example (which was from a book about the sideshow), is just so incredibly condescending. Even Mulder and Scully, two ostensibly good people, continue to stare and make assumptions. At least two of these actors were actually part of a circus sideshow, the Blockhead (Jim Rose) and the Conundrum (The Enigma aka Paul Lawrence). the latter of whom has added to his look since this episode. Last photo I remember seeing he has permanent horns. Yeah, definitely a choice.

I'd forgotten about this until "Jose Chung's From Outer Space", but Scully's slight-of-hand with the cricket? Gillian didn't know how to fake that and she'd just seen Lawrence actually eat a bunch, so she skipped the candy one they'd made for the stunt and just popped the real thing in her mouth. Now, I've had *dead* insects that were prepared and cooked as actual food but a live one? Nope, no, no thank you. She's didn't actually swallow the thing but still, ick.
