1. Sexy fanart of Yor Forger has formed an image of a character in the Spy x Family fandom that incongruous with the real Yor (awkward woman who can't handle kissing a man without getting drunk) 2. Blue Lock Season 2 had worse animation than Adult Swim's Uzumaki, but post-production effects hid the flaws a little better. 3. Production I.G. has lost its prestige by churning out anime for Western franchises or bad Adult Swim Original series for years.

Ordinarily I am not fussed about subs vs. dubs, but I can't forgive the 1998 English dub of Kiki's Delivery Service for allowing Kiki to hear Jiji speak again at the end of the film. That change undoes a significant part of Kiki's hero's journey. ("Soaring" and "I'm Gonna Fly" are still bops, though.)

Oscar

I don't like Anohana. I like a good cry, but I feel like almost every character in Anohana are irredeemably awful people. I know your friend died but that doesn't give you an excuse to be a dick. Also I feel like the show relies on you thinking Meiko is cute and likeable and I just felt nothing towards her character (or in my opinion lack of character)

Davey

There should be equal amounts of anime fan service of women as there are men and vice versa (please)

Blake hutcheson

In spite of all the censorship and localization issues, the 4kids dubs have extremely talented VA’s and are enjoyable to revisit.

Colin Lacey

Animated food does not look appealing or apperizing at all, and it's annoying when some anime make such a big production of it or the characters describe eating in detail.

GreatZelos

The most peak parts of One Piece are its flashbacks.

Woalol

Outlaw Star > Cowboy Bebop SpyxFamily ain't all that great Asta from Black Clover is a better protagonist than Midoryia from My Hero Academia.

Anime needs to stop putting great/strong female characters in situations where they are under the whims of a male character in a position of power/authority over her (eg. Apothecary Diaries, I'll go down as the Greatest Vilaness in History, May I Ask For One Final Thing?, I May be a Guild Receptionist, But I'll Solo Any Boss to Clock Out in Time). It's so frustrating to see a strong character forced to deal with a Fuckboi who won't take no for an answer and eventually "wear her out" just because she has no choice but to be around him. All that agency goes out the window immediately; and I'll never be satisfied if they end up together because it will never truly feel mutual. (P.S. some examples of this working, where both characters have a mutual appreciation for each other: Dandadan, Skip & Loafer, Villainess Level 999, and Kaguya-sama: Love is War)

More people need to watch anime made before 1990. I stopped streaming anime and I've been going through stuff released by Discotek over the last couple years and I understand so much more about the history of the medium through watching stuff like Captain Harlock, Aim for the Ace, Rose of Versailles, Lupin the Third, and Gunbuster. All of those shows and more planted the seeds for the major techniques used in modern day anime production and art.

Chai Elemental

If you don't want to discuss another Kiki's Delivery Service hot take, here's a different Miyazaki one: Ordinarily I am not fussed about subs vs. dubs, but in the case of Spirited Away, the 2002 dubbed version is significantly weaker than the subbed version. For example, in the dubbed version, Chihiro figures out Haku is a dragon based on...what, vibes? And the ending with the new dialogue is so Disneyfied in a way that almost ruins the movie for me.

Impy

Death parade is garbage. Its just torture porn with the thinnest terrible veneer of philosophy and "human nature" so edgelords can think they're smart for watching it

Lush✌️

Samurai Champloo is carried by its soundtrack. The story and characters are very unmemorable.

MH

Using "modern slang" (ex: sus, rizz etc) are valid choices when localizing manga/anime. The only real problem is that it stamps a date on the translation. Some of the best isekai is 90s shojo (Rayearth, Escaflowne, Etc) Even though 4kids dubs were extremely Americanized, their dubs were also important to bringing anime in the US to the mainstream.

Keanu

It's funnier if Nozaki and Sakura never get together in the end (for the side couples it's okay)

Fishsticxz

One Punch Man season 2 was better than season 1. It elevated a comedy anime by giving it an actual main character (Garou) and a tonally appropriate narrative arc, while still hitting the comedic bits. Season 3 will promptly undo all the good that season 2 built.

Brian

The Pokemon Sun & Moon arc of the Pokemon anime is actually pretty great with solid characters and a nice mix of slice of life and Pokemon stuff. The Stoutland/Litten arc had my kids and me in tears. This might not be a hot take. I am not sure how people in general feel about the Pokemon anime.

Alis

While the Higurashi and Umineko anime are not nearly as good as their source materiel, if you judge them on their own merits they are perfectly cromulent anime.

Agent E

Angel Beats is good actually and whoever doesn't like it has trash taste. I have not seen it since 2012, and I am definitely nostalgia biased because it was my second anime ever, but I stand firmly by my opinion. (I honestly don't remember anything that happened except for the ending)

Ryan Dudziak

Evangelion isn’t very good 😬

SirAlphaBum

JoJo was better without stands.

Caiden

Dragon Ball GT is better than Dragon Ball Super overall, despite Super having some great moments.

I have many names

Sasuke is worse than Sakura. In the Naruto series.

Kyle Adams

Gurenn Lagann's epilogue is terrible, wasting both its female characters and going against everything the series did right.

stowrag

Too many series are set in high school. The emotional maturity of a series like Wotakoi about relatively mature adults was a breath of fresh air Light Novel titles have to put the premise/kinks up front because most of them don't have characters/stories that are memorable or charismatic enough hold down a story. That's why "Naruto" is called "Naruto", and not "The weakest ninja orphan in our ninja village grew up to be hokage???"

AsinineJ

Hikaru No Go is the best sports anime of all time.

Sara Syd

Nerdy, scholarly adult Gohan makes perfect sense. He always seemed like someone who fights when he needs to. None of the Earthling-Saiyan hybrids seem to have the drive to keep training like Goku and Vegeta. Gohan was always shown having implicit/latent power that is triggered by emotion. When there's constant danger like in Future Trunks' timeline, he keeps training and fighting, but when there's relative peace, he focuses on scholarly pursuits.

Johnny 5

Under the right circumstances, I would be ok if anime were abolished.

Souler Flaire

Few things are as frustrating to me as an anime that never resolves its main romance. Whether the characters get together, or fall out of love, or circumstances force them apart, there just needs to be some kind of resolution. If you're not going to do anything with it, cut it out of the show.

cosmotron

As a genre, Shojo often handles more mature themes/topics than Shonen does, and typically handles them better as well.

V

I am more excited if an anime is announced to be using CGI over 2d animation. Projects like Lupin III: The First, Studio Orange's works, Girls Band Cry, and The First Slam Dunk are all beautiful but also are so distinct from each other that I think its the future for animation.

Jonathan Nguyen

Movies of popular anime (Ex: One Piece, Naruto, Dragon Ball, etc) are better products than their TV counterparts: A simpler narrative, better pacing, and better animation.

Mango Foam

The difference between male and female wish fulfillment in anime is vast. The differences between how they objectify the opposite gender, how the main character is portrayed/looks, and more needs to be pointed out more than it is. For a good example compare Betrothed to My Sister's Ex versus almost any male led isekai. Shonen vs shojo romances exemplify this as well a lot.

Hantale

After you've watched about 3-4 anime in most genre's there's not much new to gain from watching more. Most* new stuff is the same as something you've already watched but with new characters. *Hero of 1000 faces esque, you can only watch unique exceptions

Vic

Solo Leveling is genuinely the worst experience I have ever had watching an anime. Jin-woo was much more compelling before he got his powers. Nearly any interesting conflict or character interactions abandoned him. I'm new to anime, but out of the fifty or so that I've watched so far, I can't in good faith put it above anything else, even ones that are much "worse" in quality. I'd rather watch something that's technically "bad" that's still interesting rather than something that's technically "good" that bores me. Also, this is no hate towards the dub or anything. It was my favorite part of the anime. :)

Miy Eterp

Gate anime if removed political BS be funny 🤣

DriftedPlanet

Regarding 2000s anime: If ADV dubbed it, the English dub is always better. More vibrant delivery, and often funnier.

Guanhua Nelson Yang

Very controversial take, but I don't think One Piece is political or is about politics. Making One Piece only about politics is ignoring the main focus of the story. One Piece is a shonen manga where a kid tries to become the King of Pirates, and the theme of following your heart and doing things from the freedom of your heart. He doesn't join the Marines like his gramps, but he also doesn't join the revolutionary army like his father. He does what he wants and follows his heart, making sure other people can do the same. Oda uses politics like racism and slavery as world-building to make the world more believable, but it was never about it. It was about Luffy and his adventure, helping other people out.

Dan Koss

Lo-fi beats owe everything to Shinichiro Watanabe for getting an entire generation of teenagers to listen to jazz music.

Worcestershire Sauce

A lot of Studio Ghibli movies have weird misanthropic and cruel undertones that everybody just kind of chooses to pretend don't exist.

Ironwolf

My hottest anime takes are still: - Attack on Titan was overrated as hell. - Harem anime can be fine as long as all the characters are consenting adults and there is an actual plot. - Subs are not better than dubs, and vice versa, what matters is the quality of the show itself. - The original Ruroni Kenshin show is still one of the best anime of all time, even if the original mangaka is a disgusting pervert. Steve's gonna crucify me for this last one... 😮‍💨 - The art and animation style for One Piece is weird and off-putting, and to such an extent that despite everyone saying "One Piece is one of the greatest anime of all time!" I just can't get into it. I believe the anime/manga is a quality product. I just can't stand the way it looks.

Lithia

Jujutsu Kaisen as a series does nothing interesting, new or unique to the shonen formula. Its power system is poorly explained and not well executed and it falls into the same bad writing tropes on female characters that a lot of older shonen also did, but it gets praised instead of critiqued for these elements because the animation of the show carries its hype. (Would like to softly add that there's nothing wrong with liking jjk or finding it interesting/good, I just find a bit of annoyance with people who hype up how well it handles women when it genuinely Doesn’t imho)

GreatNate

I think having average anime is still a good thing. Obviously it would be great if EVERYTHING was a banger, but from a practical standpoint, the time and cost would be impossible. I think you need all the middling anime to be made to keep jobs and interests in the field, for better tools and techniques to be made, and for potential future talent to cut their teeth. Thanks to that, the anime industry overall continues to improve.

Kyle M

A great anime OP is the sum of the music + the animation if one is lacking or falls flat then that means the anime OP is not great. The music can be good or great but that just means it's a good song and not a good OP. Same logic applies to the ED

Cadmon Alima

More a reply to the last video. I'm charmed by Suzumiya Haruhi. When I was younger I also recognized I was 1 among billions in the world and it made me feel like nothing. But her way of life gave me direction. "Make the world a more exciting place." It's stuck with me. She shines.

Cadmon Alima

I kinda agree. I feel the "divine" are a little too human in their understandings. They feel more like rich inheritors running a company that controls the world than people on a higher plane of existence. Naive rather than determined. That said, I went in wanting what was displayed in the OP and pilot. So I have the bias of disappointment.

Cadmon Alima

Midoriya is a really easy protagonist to surpass. Just need 5 ounces of depth.

Cadmon Alima

I'll admit I hated Kill La Kill until there was at least some balance. Like, I rolled my eyes at trying to sell Ryuuko as a serious action protag when they had her in that outfit. Just felt like a hollow ecchi show. But then I was peer pressured to watch more and eventually appreciated it from the men in the same positions.

Cadmon Alima

I do really wish there was more ways to learn about old shows. I ended up really enjoying Patlabor, but it was a miracle I even know about it.

Cadmon Alima

I need average and entertaining anime to watch in the background. If a show is so good I have to give it 110% of my attention to appreciate the creative nuances in the script and animation, I'm never gunna have time to properly see more than 5 a year.

Nate Bergert

Baki is a little too, umm, I don't know how to say it. Sexually charged? 😂 I wanted to like it, I just can't...

Agent X

To have "1-10 ratings" have a meaning, one should seek out what it would mean for an anime to be a 10 and an anime to be a 1. Saying every anime is a 7 or above because "I wouldn't finish the anime if it was bad" might as well mean you have a rating from 1-4 depending on if it's "watchable" or if it's a "masterpiece". My picks for 1/10 animes are Musashino and Ninja Collection.

Izer

Ranking of Kings S1 is one of the best anime I've ever watched, but I'm to this day haunted by how it decided to conclude, particularly with its main antagonist. I've never felt such genuine hatred towards a villain, only to be mocked by the narrative for expecting that an unambiguously vile person would face consequences, not mention the fact they get married to [SPOILERS]

Izer

FMA is one of the greatest manga of all time, and I really appreciate Arakawa at least tried to write a narrative like the Ishvalan genocide considering when the FMA manga was written. But I always disliked how much Scar was painted as "morally gray" for wanting to basically kill Nazis. Also as a manga reader, FMAB butchers Scar's conclusion by removing the scene in the manga where Scar and Miles go to rebuild Ishval.

jenis

(my friend's take) sakura from naruto is not as bad as some people make her out to be. sure she can be a little annoying and it's understandable why some people don't like her but i don't think she deserves so much hate. she's just a teenage girl and i feel like some people just want to dogpile on her for being just that (or parroting popular opinion)

Impy

I certainly also have the same bias of disappointment. The OP of the show is truly gorgeous and has such a banger of a song; it probably makes me even more frustrated with the content of the show itself

Caiden

I mean they could just remove fanservice entirely which would solve the problem.

Caiden

I feel the way Videogamedunkey would likely feel about Solo Leveling.

ABird

Hunter x Hunter is incredibly mid. None of the fights outside of maybe 1 or 2 are interesting. Gon as a protagonist is super boring and is powers are lame (especially considering for half the series he fights with just a fishing poll). Also the reunion with his dad happened way too early and was lame. Half of the show is the chimera ant arc, which while had a nice pay off, it was way too bloated for its own good. Overall, just never reaches the hype of other shonen of its era.

Jack Sydog

The way most manga is paced, one chapter a week is an objectively bad way to read them. Often not enough happens in a single chapter to be satisfying and I end up forgetting important details halfway through a story arc because it’s been several months since I’ve read it. If there isn’t at least a full story arcs worth of back log I’ll just wait.

Jonathan Nguyen

It could also be that Sakura is a strong and kickass female heroine that haters find repulsive and prefer more shy and timid girls like Hinata.

Matthew Ely

Hajime no Ippo is great in many ways. But the amount of homophobia and sexual harassment can make it hard to recommend in its entirety. You can forgive it, but mostly if you already have fond memories of watching it as a kid.

It's KFG

There is a lot of older anime, 80s-90s that is just as good if not better than lot of modern current day stuff, even if they feel outdated by quality and what was acceptable content of that time.

N

I lived in Japan, so I understand that there's a lot of Japanese social norms that are all about the ritual and ceremony of something but it annoys me to no end when characters cream their pants when they put food in their mouth. It's the exact same cookie-cutter reaction: "まさかー?!うまー!" like they're flabbergasted that food doesn't taste like dogshit. I found it unbearable to make curry in Pokemon Sword and Shield because of how tired I am of this overdone trope. Please, just have a normal HUMAN reaction to food. It's so fake.

It's KFG

Live Action adaptations of anime and manga isn't a bad thing, and some people overact just because the worst ones were more high profile flops.

Cadmon Alima

I dropped it an episode in, which means I didn't even get to the leveling part. I'm really tired of those game overlay shows. So it was an immediate, I'm out. I've had the plot explain while it was comic only and my friend had pushed me to watch an abridged version of it and I a drive to never try it.

Cadmon Alima

Ironically, I do often feel attracted to the reverse harem protags. In standard harems, I often only find myself interested in 1/5 of the the girls. I suppose as a loner guy, I don't like too much attention and I'd like girls who like having their own space.

I have no idea what i'm doing

it's actually kind of unsettling the amount of series' are set in a high school setting, and if it's not around that setting, the characters are usually from age ranges 14 - 17

Conor Holt

Defining manga by “shonen” or “shojo” isn’t very useful in describing or recommending it, since that’s just the category of the magazine they were published in, and plenty of manga overlap between different categories. It’s like asking someone “do you prefer Warner Brother films or Paramount films?”

Ivan

If you want a very weird experience, try Vampire Holmes.

Bye in Halfling (Micha)

I am really enjoying your anime watch list videos, SungWon. Have you seen ACCA-13 yet? It was a lovely, short series I saw last year that I found very charming.

Bye in Halfling (Micha)

Also I marathoned all of Bunny Girl after you mentioned it and I am so glad you did because I really enjoyed it. It was quite an unexpected surprise, even with your review. It reminded me of Key/Ishihara Tatsuya romances with a more likeable protag-kun.

Mercredi

90's shoujo isekai is better than modern-era isekai for many reasons, but an important one is that no one these days has the balls to make Sir Isaac Newton the evil emperor.
