Character-driven anime is generally better and deeper as an experience than plot-driven. I care less about what is happening and more about how the characters process and react to it.

Shua

When Marnie was there is kinda boring, with uninteresting characters and an underwhelming mystery.

polkadotsandstars

I like a lot of modern anime, but I also feel like as time goes on anime looks more streamlined and clean. There’s a lack of texture, muted tones, and variation of art style. Even the animation itself seems to go towards maximal and clean sakuga instead of the kinds of limited squash and stretch you’d see in something older. Sometimes it’s the rougher details that ground us in what’s happening, hope they make a comeback.

Attack on Titan really fumbled the ending. The rational that Erin had 'seen all possible futures' and this (the canonical ending) was the best outcome I just could not believe and my immersion was broken. The ending ruined the show because of that one line.

Paisios Hensersky

The tendency to depict relationships between humans and demons as some delightful or edifying experience is insane and naïve, even worse when romantic relationships are depicted. This casual and pleasant depiction of interaction with the demonic is part of what led both to my mental illness and demonic affliction. I grapple with demons every day and there's nothing 'pleasant' about it. Holy water makes me involuntarily flinch, prayer leads to convulsions, touching holy relics causes voices to scream. Christ and His Eastern Orthodox Church are the only people that have helped me.

Reading the visual novel is always far more worth it than watching the anime adaptation. Higurashi, Clannad, Stein's Gate, Shuffle whatever it doesn't matter. The vibe is completely changed and often lots of context is lost. You often lose the inner monologue of the POV character, which removes a lot of texture from the story and story events must be compressed. Characters can't really sit and contemplate on much of anything because each minute of animation is so costly. Please read more VNs people!

One Punch Man season 2 was actually pretty good, yes it was no season 1 but it had actual action scenes and fights as opposed to whatever the hell season 3 was supposed to be

Masterdramon

You've spoken previously (and correctly) that anime OPs are an underappreciated art form in their own right, but the same goes doubly for anime EDs. Rarely do they get featured in Top 10s or actively discussed apart from their songs, but precisely because they don't have the burden of needing to "sell" a show with great bombast or high-action spectacle, they're a medium where some of the most deeply creative work in the industry's history has been realized. Think about Mob Psycho 100 ED1, painstakingly animated through painted glass, or the recent S2 ED of Frieren, drawn and animated by a single person solely in colored pencil. EDs deserve a lot more recognition from the anime fandom and artistic community at large.

Samurai champloo is better than cowboy bebop

symphonic

A lot of (primarily shonen) anime fans take themselves too seriously and refuse to engage with more lighthearted (at least from a surface level) media like slice of life genres or things like idol shows. People need to learn to get some more joy and whimsy in their media and their life, *especially* with how fucked up the world is right now.

MOL352

Shinichirou Watanabe is overrated, and has been cruising off the success of Cowboy Bepop for years. Every time: a new show gains a lot of hype becuase of his name, and none of them stick the landing.

Keanu

Let me be clear this wasn’t my hot take, I overheard it at a book store: “Why would I want to read One Piece it’s like 8000 chapters long”

devon

Naruto and one piece are overrated

Colton Lambert

Sports anime is the best genre of anime

Abhi Prasad

Kagura and Gintoki from Gintama are two of the best voices acting/seiyuu performances in all of anime

Chris

The modern One Piece anime is animated too loosely, and I can't tell what is going on half the time cos every frame is so off-model. The old fights were better cos they were simpler, easy to read and, most importantly, SHORTER.

Rishi Kochhar

People are sleeping on ghost in the shell stand alone complex. It's way better than a lot of newer anime.

SomeCallMeGON

I wish more studios had the breathing room to do more original anime over adaptations. While there are many that fall flat, the quality still tends to be higher and they try different things from adaptations since it's made more with the format in mind.

The first Full Metal Alchemist anime isn't THAT bad -- it was good enough to get keep interest in the series going long enough for Brotherhood to be made. My favorite manga, Chrono Crusade, had a bad enough anime that I'm never gonna get my "Brotherhood" for it. (I'm bitter, I'll admit.)

Toaster_inc

Not every anime needs to be a 200 IQ, morally gray, “the villain represents late-stage capitalism” character study. Sometimes the absolute peak of the medium is just dumb, primal hype. Like pure spectacle. The hero hits a new form, the screen flashes gold, the music goes feral, and the bad guy realizes they’re about to get folded. That’s why Dragon Ball still hits. Watching Goku scream his way into a new transformation isn’t “bad writing,” it’s the anime equivalent of a guitar solo. Subtlety is cool and all, but sometimes I just want raw, shameless, dopamine-maxed hype. And I think that's art in its own way.

BMJ614

Naruto should have been called Ninja Academy and shined the spotlight on at least 8 of the ninja kids. What we got was the Naruto and Sasuke show for most of it. They would show "glimpses" of the rest of the cast then stop there development completely to focus on Naruto and Sasuke. Making the story equally about the other children would have helped with my enjoyment of the story as a whole

Lord Lore

Dragonball/Z is an anime that is underappreciated for how important it is to the medium and the specific genre it belongs to (action/battle shonen), while also having done irreparable harm to that genre

Pumaloaf

Just because something has a stupid concept doesn't mean it's bad, I actually kinda like Reincarnated as a Vending machine.

Caiden

While I do agree with you about Christianity and about the depiction of demons in anime, I feel this comment is going to be socially perceived negatively.

Caiden

Anime is superior as a medium compared to manga and light novels in terms of sensory pleasure and its capacity to invoke emotion. However, a particular manga or light novel can be better than its anime counterpart, and manga and light novel production can have advantages over anime production (at least as far as I'm aware). Manga and light novels can also give the consumer more control over the pace they can enjoyable consume art compared to anime.

Jonathan Nguyen

I prefer anime/manga endings where everyone is grown up and happy. After a long journey, I want to see the characters I care about living happy lives as older adults (Naruto, Dragon Ball, My Hero Academia, Food Wars). I usually feel empty when an anime/manga ends on an ambiguous note (Pokemon, Jujutsu Kaisen, Katekyo Hitman Reborn).

LittleKachowski

Action anime has flanderized to prioritize action action action, and they are difficult to find memorable nowadays. Older stories like One Piece, Naruto Part 1, and DB/DBZ are memorable despite their flaws, in part because of their willingness to slow down and focus on characters or atmosphere. Newer stories barely seem to do this, and instead use crumbs of slice-of-life as setups for story beats, instead of as story beats themselves.

Justin Thorpe

I heavily disagree with the puritanical stance that the west, especially North America, takes on media. All nudity must be censored, sex is taboo, and some people are even uncomfortable watching scenes where characters kiss with their friends/family. It's anachronistic, pearl-clutching nonsense. Of course there needs to be some lines drawn, I'm not necessarily arguing in favor of any extremes, but it feels increasingly common that anime is censored and characters are covered up for the "western audience," as if we're all children who can't handle seeing a little skin. Sex is a fundamental part of the human experience, and everyone has seen at least one nude body. Hiding it and demanding that it be discussed in hushed tones is ridiculous and embarrassing.

Izer

As scummy as it feels in practice, I don't hate the idea of streaming services bringing back the commercial break, particularly for anime. I think the major problem with commercial breaks in a "post-cable" media landscape is that ads in general are the least entertaining/creative they've been in years. However, I would argue the mid-episode intermission both builds anticipation, and forces the viewer to sit with recent story developments. Binge/"hot take" culture is as attractive as it is, not just because of convenience, but that the conventional experience of having your show interrupted sucks more and more. That said, I'm not arguing in favor of an increasingly expensive paywall to avoid ads, just that there should be a way to incentivize digesting a story in-real time that doesn't feel clunky

BurritoSupreme

More action manga should be full color. At least full scenes. A lot of modern action manga scenes can be filled with so much visual noise that it can be damn near incomprehensible.

Mangoappreciator

I don't think Dressrosa's biggest problem is necessarily that it's too long or that the Straw hats don't get enough focus, both are true imo - but in your own video you compare it to Wano, which is substantially longer than it and it has similar problems with focus, where the Wano characters themselves absorb a lot of the focus. Hot take is that DoFlamingo is just not a good arc villain, all his best moments come from before this arc and he doesn't feel like an escalation in threat compared to previous villains Luffy has faced, despite this being treated like Post-Timeskip Luffy's first real test. And it makes the extended length feel annoying and undeserved

James Rule

Berserk never should have been adapted to anime. The subject matter and overall scope makes it impossible to adapt properly and it never should have been attempted.

Jacob Haras

90s anime is the most visually appealing. Everything still hand drawn with intention and even the shortcuts they took back then are less immersion breaking than the 3D and frame drops that suddenly burst into modern shows.

Audrey

Too many people think gentle/kind characters = weak. It’s especially annoying when characters like Yona or Tohru get compared to characters like in Solo Leveling where aura farming is more important than the character development. And Yona does have slow development but by the end of season 1 she really shown how she has grown.

Lucia V.

Is this a Western thing? Is this a thing outside of the US? Europe is very comfortable with nudity and a degree of sex in media, definitely okay with kissing

Dan Koss

Light Yagami was right.

Saikomachi

It’s okay to hit the 10 second skip ahead button on boring parts. You can sort of do it while reading, but some friends crucify me for this saying just don’t watch it if you’re not interested.

Ironwolf

I dunno if this actually qualifies but: There is no actual debate to be had about Subs v. Dubs. The fact is that if a show is good, and the VOs (in any language) do their jobs right, it doesn't matter which way you watch. And anyone who hates on someone else for picking one version over the other, regardless of which one, is gatekeeping in the WORST possible way. It can discourage people, especially people who are new to anime, from wanting to explore anime more. So NO, subs are not better than dubs, nor are dubs better than subs. What matters is the overall quality of the production and being able to choose to enjoy it the way YOU like.

polkadotsandstars

I heard a hot take one time that “ Rock Lee should’ve been the main character of Naruto”

Matthew Ely

The "rain scene" in 100 Meters will go down as one of the most important artistic achievements in anime in the 2020s.

Cragl3yman343

Hot take: One Piece hasn't lost any of its quality. It has its ups and downs sure, but the overall quality of each arc hasnt really degraded. The stories are just a lot more filled with huge things that are beyond the small scope of the first 1/2. The New World was in fact a NEW world and isn't comparable to the Paradise half of The Grand Line.

Justin Thorpe

You're right. I probably should have just said North America instead of "especially North America." I live in the US, so my perspective is somewhat limited. Though, I hear that some European countries are becoming more conservative and supportive of censorship, but this probably isn't the time or place to have that conversation, lol.

Mango Foam

The reason there is less demand for shows aimed at female audiences is that male audiences tend to refuse to watch them while female audiences will gladly watch both male and female oriented media.

Mango Foam

We NEED another Carole and Tuesday like show with commentary on AI

Mango Foam

Journal with Witch should be watched by everyone, def shonen bros

Diloolie's Art

Shounen is overrated and it'd be great to see any other demo get anime please

Tanner

I don't understand Evangelion. I tried to get into it when I was in high school but the tone was strangely bleak and the characters don't make much sense to me other than Misato from her introduction. The ending was apparently cryptic so I don't get what the hype is

purplealchemist

Hot Take: Dubbing is an under appreciated art that takes a lot of skill to master. It is not as simple as "make sure you match the mouth flaps". A good anime dub voice actor has to speak clearly, talk clearly, AND act. I don't think dub voice actors and ADR Directors receive enough credit for all the work they do under a tight deadline. Some of the greatest anime dubs out there (Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, Inuyasha, Ouran) didn't just happen. If you watch the audio commentary on FMAB's DVD extras, you will hear the voice actors talk about how particular Mike McFarland was when they were in the booth recording. It's very hard work, but the end results are sometimes legendary. Side note: please go support Mike McFarland. He had to undergo emergency surgery and has a gofundme. He's contributed a lot to the dub community over the past 20 plus years and could use some support.

The prevalence of impact frames is kind of making the technique obsolete. You used to see it every now and then here and there, but lately a lot of anime feel like they need to spam impact frames and it makes the animation very samey. I think the big flashy moments in action anime hide away poor fight choreography a lot of times.

Latif

I really wish anime was more experimental with its art styles, especially given how often they used to animate for foreign IPs (Moomin, Aflred J. Kwak, even Scooby Doo). It was really fun to see Japanese animation be more different looking, and I feel in modern times, anime generally looks incredibly stale, with the occasional standout art style. It sometimes puts me off of certain shows that could otherwise have incredible stories.

dragonweirdo

I think good anime doesnt need high budget or tons of dynamic frames. I think the key to good animation is setting a solid rhythm. So long as that rhythm is there, the animation can be mostly slideshows and still be good.

tenor41

I miss when anime series were longer. Obviously there are plenty of long-running series that are on today, but I feel like the average length of shows has gone down. I'm a big shounen fan, and it feels like modern shounen are not nearly as long. It's possible this is because they don't do filler episodes anymore, and I think a show like JJK could benefit from some filler episodes every now and then. This doesn't apply to every show, I think plenty of series work perfectly fine as one or two cour shows, and lengthening them would only make them worse, but some shows are cut way too short and not given enough time to develop (Like Gundam: The Witch From Mercury) This doesn't even only apply to anime, TV shows in the US are way shorter than they used to be.
