Maybe they didn’t have to kill the mayor but they definitely could have shown the harm that humans have incurred on the environment more seriously. It says something that issues the animals deal with are made light of with the comedy but the idea of any change or consequence coming to humans isn’t even considered. I feel like older children movies like fern gully or nausicaa do that better. It’s not even that they humans have to die but the movie almost argues that we don’t have to fundamentally change at all, that we’re already capable of saving the environment if we talk about it and reach across the aisle. It’s funny though. I do think it could’ve been interesting if the animals started their own political party since they can talk.
