I would like to try and offer a perspective on the cat stuff. This entity was created through the one wish willow and has not existed previously. It only has memories to go off of to fulfill its prime directive of “loving bear more than anyone else in the world.” So it thinks what do humans do surrounding death? They make memorials. It has no idea how taboo it is to place a deceased animal in a shrine in the kitchen which is why other Nikki is surprised at Bear’s reaction and goes “oh you don’t like it? It was supposed to make you happy?” Same goes for the Cat sandwich. Oh bear wants to be a food critic I’ll appeal to his interest with a cute note and see what the verdict is on cat. It completely ignores the taboo that most cultures do not consume domesticated cats or dogs. Really interesting sociological commentary on how some social norms are learned without explicitly discussing them and also really paints the picture of not only how far Bear will go to try and maintain this connection, but how this entity behaves like an extraterrestrial being with a mild understanding of how to “human” I also think the cat is a great through line of just how passive Bear is throughout the film. The night Sandy passes away Bear barely reacts and spends the night obsessing and crying over Nikki. Then in the bar he only brings up Sandy’s death to attempt to garner sympathy from Nikki when the attention gets away from him. So many details in the movie really highlight how entitled and self centered Bear is, but is done in a very realistic manner.

inde navaratte did soooo much research into getting creative with her character and asked the director if she could do this and that. incredible work. i was watching the dead meat podcast about the movie and they showed a clip of the director and performers promoting the film on a stage and the bear actor was a bear apologist, saying something like "i don't think he's a villain. i think we need to allow for gray areas" 🤢 that's my main issue with 'obsession'; i think the main message not landing with most men is a huge problem. if they had more women on the writing/production team with women taking the helm of directing the film, it would have been a clearer narrative. the violence against women was a lot. it would have also hit less like "she's an abusive girlfriend" vs "he's a rapist incel coward." kennie jd also mentioned something interesting about wish!nikki being child-like and infantalized by bear. he's always scolding her like "don't do that, nikki. you can't do that, nikki." like an older brother, on top of real!nikki saying she thinks of bear as a brother and the "hansel and gretel" incest fanfic wish!nikki recited at the party. i still enjoyed it regardless of my gripes and loved hearing your thoughts!

Proposed alternate ending for Hoppers: the mayor refuses to change his mind, so one of the animals goes into a mayor robot body and takes over management of the city. The mayor goes into a hamster robot body kept on the animal-mayor's desk.

That’s not true about Bear’s actor. When he said that he was talking about his approach to playing the character, and the idea that he doesn’t think Bear is the villain has been wildly misquoted. If you look it up you’ll see he has stated this clarification many many times and definitely thinks Bear is the villain.

The moment he knows she can't control herself, and still takes advantage of her was the moment for me he became irredeemable. Before that moment there are grey areas in what he's doing. Ultimately he's a great example of banal evil. He doesn't think what he's doing is wrong, and has no interest in thinking deeper about it. Which as a man I think makes a great villain. He is a villain I could actually become, and a lotta men outright are. Way more effective for me than a mustache twirling scumbag
