We've had two weeks of poor luck with sick models and unsafe weather, so I let myself do something I'd wanted to try for awhile: working from an existing drawing.

The avocado-ish-colored marker drawing in the background is one of my favorites I've done - one of the rare times I wanted to exaggerate the figure, and then managed to NOT FORGET to exaggerate the figure!

Using the same Blick hot press watercolor block I always use, I set out to do two half-sized paintings based on this piece, and exaggerate a bit more. For the first one, I got weird with the hair:

A little Art Nouveau-y! I plopped the hair in without really thinking about a color direction. I decided to do my favorite lazy color scheme, split complementary. I picked a gradient of lime green into blue-green. Not the prettiest colors for a face and body, which was intentional - I didn't want it to be "pretty." Sometimes I focus too much on what colors are saleable, and I wanted to make sure this was --inhale-- A PRAAAAACTIIIIIICE.

For the second one, I pulled back on the hair and tried to focus on simplifying the shapes.

Successful practice! I couldn't tell ya exactly what I learned, but I'm sure it's buried somewhere deep in my brain and will affect my future figure drawings, regardless of how unaware I am of it.

I popped all three of these up in my store, for shits & giggles. And here are the scans for all of them:

Here's the store listing! (Idk how I knocked all of that marker work out in 20 minutes!)

Numero uno, and...

...numero dos!

Make sure you use the ARTNERD50 coupon at check-out for 50% off! (They're listed at normal prices for the normos!) Fingers crossed we'll have more luck with live models tomorrow night. :)

I like the wall of red hair as a framing feature for her.

I wanna do more weirdo stuff like that. :)

I love what you've done with her face in the first of the three; a real not taking any shit expression 🙂

I also like the big wall of red hair, and the hand that tangles in it is somehow a very Danielle hand. And of course, she's got great knees! Especially in the extra stylized one, somehow.

Something about the legs in the wall-of-hair version makes her look like a centaur. The second one is very Venus of Willendorf. Neat to see the subtle differences between the three versions.

I think I'd had enough practice by then to get 'em to where I liked 'em!

I especially love the first one, with the hair framing her and a playful little interruption of the frame that her hand makes. It immediately made me think of Klimpt! (Not that I'm any kind of expert on him...)

Numero Dos is just STUNNINGLY beautiful to me. The peaceful expression, the delicate shading mixed with the exaggerated expressive shapes of the body. It just speaks to something in me! I am kicking myself for ignoring my notifications for a while (a necessary thing to do sometimes!) and missing my chance to buy the original.
