Happy Friday, folks!

Remember how we had that economic blackout day a week ago? I felt it would be more meaningful to spend cash in my tiny town, so I went over to my pal Mary's shop Dogwood General (the one with the GOOD CARAMELS). She always has just what I need.

I updated my organized-by-height garden diagram accordingly.

(Can you tell I like orange? I like orange.)

Here's the original art if you want it! (Remember the half-off code at the bottom of this post!)

Saturday I joined my dear friend in Harper's Ferry for baby's first protest:

Despite keeping to the edge of the crowd, not wanting to be the center of attention, Luke foretold that somehow we'd end up in the newspaper, and he was right. The upside-down flag caught a LOT of eyes, including the photographer for The Journal. (I gave a few very awkward quotes, which he printed even though I encouraged the reporter to prioritize the gal next to me, who had actual NPS ties. I think they wanted to point out that this wasn't just the usual suspects, and new people were showing up for protests now.)

I was pretty happy with how my sign came out, considering the timeframe! The paint was still wet when I pulled it out of the car.

Smokey's actually RIPPED but he only shows it off when he's pissed off.

For those who don't know, the federal employees who were fired thanks to Musk's "doge" were told they were being fired for "poor performance," even if the employee had outstanding performance records. What's going on is actually criminal.

BUT! You already know that, and you aren't here to think about US news, so here's another comic that's still related to the news but at least a little bit funnier:

Traveling home at night in slush using only my arms and a plastic sled. My brain really knows how to illustrate an emotion!

(From that dream I was transported to the middle of the Arctic Ocean surrounded by glaciers breaking apart during a nonsensical tidal wave. BRAIN, I GET IT. Lay off.)

Here's the original, for all my fellow panic-dreamers!

At Art Night last Monday we talked about BANANAS.

A totally normal thing to discuss without context for out-of-the-loop members, right?

Wednesday morning was SO beautiful. UNTIL...

Ollie was nowhere to be seen. 👀

Here's the original! I'll spare you the photo I took of the tail. 😬

Pip would make a great moon.

Here's the original if you need more Pip in your life! Remember to type in DAILYSMILE50 at checkout for your well-deserved 50% off!

And that's it for now. I'm still plucking away on the long-form gender-related dailies I started a couple weeks ago. For now it's just been a nice release that feels a bit like a journal entry.

By the way, if you're still in the market for a copy of the GWS Compendium, I've been sneaking very old GWS prints into each book order! Plus a coloring book, one of these super-old GWS stickers...

... and, as always, free bookplates for Patreon patrons. :) Just tell me your bookplate preferences at checkout and mention you're a patron.

If you order a set of books and you'd like a particular item or character from this pile, feel free to make requests!

I just added the buttons after unearthing them from a 17-year-old pile of old merch!

And international customers, I was wrong - you CAN buy the GWS Compendium from Iron Circus still! It's still expensive to ship, but they're better equipped so ship overseas than I am. (And if you buy a copy from them, hit me up - I'll send you bookplates separately, free of charge.)

Okay I think that's it. I hope you have a very Sunzilla weekend, and not a Disembodied Squirrel Tail one!

You make me like Fridays - these posts cheer my sore heart!

William Cole

An excellent crop of dailies; you really are a good gardener! ; )

Hugh Eckert

Just as long as Pip doesn't moon you. Nothing like waking up to cat butt...

Michael Steamweed

Oh no! The eclipse! The great feline demon in the sky has eaten the sun! Quick!! You must feed it with fresh kitty food so that it will regurgitate the sun back!

Becky Fish

I went to my first protest today! The Stand Up for Science Rally in Philly!

Amy Crook

That sign is amazing! As is your ePIPse, lol that's a very familiar experience. My two that sleep with me have taken to tag-teaming me to pet them when I'm only sort of awake and really could go back to sleep, the adorable little assholes.

dcorsetto

Ahh what that's awesome!! Also I'm pretty sure my good friend (a fish scientist) was up there, too!

dcorsetto

Oh there's a lot of mooning going on at night. Like 80% moon.

Becky Fish

Nice! I was with the Academy of Natural Sciences group. :)

Ursus Ridens

Dang! Badly need and would pay money for -- tho' I hope that the need will go away soon -- a poster version of that sign! (Or your permission to print and put up that picture, with attribution?) May I also please refer those who haven't read it recently to Gary Snyder's long-beloved "Smokey the Bear Sutra" (https://sacred-texts.com/bud/bear.htm), which your sign brings irresistibly to mind? Also would love to find those sunflower seeds, even though I know perfectly well that, we being cat-less, the various scurrious scurrying scurrilous Sciuridae hereabouts would eat them as soon as they were planted.

Tim Pendergast

Oh, the cat brown eye is just another sign of love!

Dean Reilly

"Eat the banana... NOW! Nope, too late."

Minzoku Bokumetsu

AMAZING sign that needs to be re-enacted in real life! also, it would be hilarious to just post a banana out of context and people STILL reply "NOT YET" XD

David Neale-Lorello

OMG Danielle! -- How do you get your sunflowers to grow without the squirrels eating either the seeds or the seedlings? (Qualifier: I am decidedly not an experienced gardener.) -- I'VE HAD DREAMS JUST LIKE THAT!

Amelia Lewis

Careful! The only part of that that mine would understand is "regurgitate." Ugh (well and the urgent tone, so _double_ ugh)

Pete Jordan

Ace sign. Meanwhile, I'm trying to think of practical uses for a squirrel-less tail… Don't get them hereabouts, as the nearest squirrels are in the park half a mile away, and our Tribe are too indolent to go fetch any. Or wallabies or rheas for that matter, but they'd have trouble getting those through the catflap. Undeconstructed, at least…

Chris Mac.

That sign is The Best! Can I share the pic?

Steve Boyko

I just want to say that I love these dailies. They are a highlight of my week.

John Smutko

I have twin boys with red-green color blindness which means they are not allowed to pick tomatoes from the garden and can’t pick ripe bananas in the supermarket. Me going with the hyper specific “go grab some bananas” Dad Joke when they’re shopping with me never gets old. For me.

Ben Kmo

Someone else who likes their bananas well past the banana bread stage! I’ve never met anyone else who likes them that ripe. It was a running joke at my old job that the banana someone wanted to throw out was the one I brought for lunch…

Tim Pendergast

Yup! I tend to buy them off the discount rack and then wait a couple days for them to get JUST RIGHT!

Cat

You need the full effect... She oughta post pics of the real deal!

Cat

YES THIS ONE!! digital copy?

Ursus Ridens

Yeah, Ollie seems to be pretty ferocious in that regard. And today I found a squirrel eating the (squirrel-repellent, chili-infused) suet cake bird food on my new "unclimbable" iron shepherd's crook. I sweah, if anyone comes out with a robo-cat, I might get one.

dcorsetto

OH GOSH yes, you're welcome to use that sign however you can!! It's too big for me to scan (tho, good call, Cat!), but if the photo here isn't big enough to print from, hit me up via email - dcorsetto@gmail.com - and I'll send you a bigger photo of it! "Wrathful but calm" sure does seem to suit Smokey. :) Those gigantic sunflower seeds are sold by Renee's Garden! https://www.reneesgarden.com/products/sunflower-giant-edible-sunzilla At the very least, they won't bloom til they give those Sciuridae (I just learned a new word, ty) a real climbing task first!

dcorsetto

I have DEFINITELY considered lending out Ollie! He'd love the gig!

dcorsetto

David, this is a good question!! I haven't had any trouble with the seedlings (I circle them with that green wire fencing, which has been a lifesaver), but come to think of it, the only successful sunflowers I've gotten so far have been right next to the kitchen door, where I NEVER see squirrels - the cats are let out from that door, and the flower garden is between the door and the sidewalk. Guess I should plan to KEEP the sunflowers in that area!

dcorsetto

Aahaha that will NEVER get old.

David Neale-Lorello

Ah! Yes, that makes sense. Disappointing, though, as I'm not in a position to maintain guard-kitties where the sunflowers will be. I'll have to try something else...

Cathi Andrews

I was all excited to hear there was an international option through Iron Circus, but sadly the postage is still more than the compendium (neither your fault nor Iron Circus'), and the total puts it beyond my current capacity. I have hopes that one day I'll find a workable way to get one into my grabby little hands. Love the dailies, as ever.

Chris W.

If a scarecrow is used to scare crows away, then wouldn't a scare-cat scare the cats away? I'm thinking David needs a scare-squirrel!
