Hello hello! I just got back from my vacation in San Diego to visit my high school bff, the original Reese, the Muse of Darren, my darling Adam (and his husband, not pictured, sorry Mitchell!).

Adam and I went for a very long sunset walk together when I got there. I was enamored with all the plant life in his sunny neighborhood.

I love that we've been friends long enough that now he has to put up with me in my Plant Slut era.

If you're a fellow Plant Slut who wants the original, it's right here! Use DAILYSMILE50 at checkout for 50% off, as always.

And that's the only daily comic I managed to finish! I have the SILLIEST reason why.

Every morning, my east coast body was awake by 6 am and ready to make some comics before the boys woke up. But every surface within my gracious hosts' house is level with its seating - mainly glass coffee tables next to low vintage couches. Their dining table is outside (California, amiright) and has an acceptable seat/surface ratio, but every morning it was like 50 degrees out. Way too cold for my bony little fingies.

I finally found a nearby cafe to work at, which was furnished with a "funky" variety of tables and chairs. Yet despite the abundance of combinations, every single one of them possessed a COMICAL distance between seat and surface. Appalling.

Regardless, I finished the Nasturtium comic while I was there, but I looked like a little kid at an adult table the whole time.

Despite the surface/seating issues, for whatever reason, I found it easy to make little paintings at Adam's. They're imperfect, but I'm gonna share them here anyway. If you're in my $5/mo Art Nerd tier, you're used to me saying: It's a PRAAAAACTICE. So here's some practice work!

(Aforementioned outdoor dining room table, in the afternoon when it warmed up. I can make paintings in the company of friends, but it's impossible for me to make comics when people are around! Anyone else have this problem?)

Really wonked up that STOP on the sign, but oh well, I liked the plants.

This one went into the little free art library in the neighborhood!

At first it looked so bad I couldn't bring myself to put it in there, but I fixed it up after a few iterations and now I kinda like it. I'll do a little process roundup for my Art Nerd tier later so you can see how I approached these little paintings. :)

Lest I forget, I broke in a new sketchbook at a VERY gay gay bar downtown!

I was the only female-bodied person in sight. I've never felt so in-the-way in my life. (I was literally asked to move by a guy who was trying to stare at the tightly-clothed young piece of ass behind me.)

Anyway, that's all for now, but I'm sure I'll finish a couple others next week and pile them in to the next Friday Daily Comics post! Thanks for bearing with me while I let myself have an actual for-real vacation! And have a lovely weekend, even those of us who are on the damp, chilly east coast! <3

I love the little paintings! They're very human in their imperfection, which I appreciate even more now in the AI era. And we have goldenrods in our yard which our neighbor definitely thinks are weeds, but the bees LOVE, so they stay.

ADAM!!! So glad he's thriving, what a gem! <3

Me, a Canadian: a dining table... OUTSIDE? (Those paintings are great!! I love the bubbly tree!)

dcorsetto

He really is!! He immediately asked about you, and I told him the same thing - thriving in Austin! I had to explain cryptids to him, lol. :)

8' Cactus just by the roadside?!? Now I'm obsessed. So I lookup the house on Google maps, how did you not try to invade? Looking back at previous years, you see it was a plain old lawn 10 years ago. Then the transformation begins. Year over year it is amazing!

dcorsetto

Wait, which house did you look up?!

Tudza

It's like Tucson. You either have a putting green lawn or you fill the whole thing with cactus ( teddy bear cactus in that one picture? ) We were different, we had big rocks with circle breaks for various "lawn" type decorations. A dump truck dropped all the melon sized rocks in a big pile and I got to throw them around to cover the dirt.

Andy Ihnatko

The guy who asked you to move... did he at least do so politely? Or were you forced to embarrass him in a way that virtually guaranteed he'd never get anything from anybody at this bar, ever?

Blake C

We are heading out there in a couple of weeks to see family. Going to be a nice break from up here.

dcorsetto

Oh no, he was catty about it. Catty, but amusing enough that I let it slide (and moved to improve his view).

dcorsetto

Ooohh neat! I forgot there was even a house there. Wow, what a difference since the earlier photos!! (Lol I'm still confused by your "how did you not try to invade" question?!)

Kevin Ruderman

Garden Envy was my point. They have so much packed into a small space that I thought you might try to sneak in and just sleep in the garden.

dcorsetto

Oh! By then I'd tried to "pet" enough friendly-looking flora to know that half the stuff that grows down there is VERY POINTY!!

Andy Ihnatko

That's completely different. "Now go in peace, my brother, to love and serve that rockin' BEE-hind."
