Good morning, most of you! (Do I have any Australian readers out there? If so: good afternoon, mate.) I'm leaving to visit family Friday morning, so you get an early update this week!

Here's a comic from my San Diego trip, starring ✨ISABEL✨.

Isabel prefers to smear her food on the nice rug before eating it.

My drawings hardly do her justice. She's even more ridiculous irl.

Did I already share this photo last week? It doesn't matter, you needed to see it again.

Here's why my trip home from California was so, so much longer than it needed to be. It's a two-parter!

I looked at that photo way more times than I'm admitting in this comic. I still didn't see the word blue until I was all the way back at the airport.

Anyway yeah it would suck to come all the way home and find out your car had been towed, ha ha ha ha!

The original for this one's available if you want it! As always, scroll to the bottom of this page for a 50% off discount code!

I get folks with metal detectors at my door from time to time (those people LOVE my old wonky yard), but this was a new one...

I know the 18th century poop is long gone but I couldn't get the idea that this was in an outhouse for two hundred+ years. Yech. Here's the original art!

The little shard of flow ware looks pretty cool!

Turns out people used outhouses as trash bins, which makes them treasure troves for old relics! And in case you were wondering (as I was) how Brandon found the old outhouse location (there are no actual outhouses in my yard), it's pretty obvious when it's explained: he looks for a depression in the ground. That's likely where the old john used to reside.

I finally got a start on my garden this past week! I took down the entire garden wall structure on Sunday, and started plotting out what I'm going to do different this year: little woven raised beds. Observe:

And I'm also an irresponsible tenant, so I've let the English ivy take over in a few areas in the yard. I was really just preparing them to be resources for woven beds, you see. (This was not prepared at all.)

Here's what they look like!

I lined them with brown packing paper (so the dirt doesn't just seep out between the ivy over time).

And if you're a resourceful cheapskate like me and you wanna have this comic, the original is for sale here!

Ollie recently crossed over to being a Trouble Cat, which is not normally his vibe.

I suspect this'll happen with every ovegrown plant I haven't felt like repotting. Thanks, Ollie.

Here's the original art!

I think y'all know by now that I have some vivid-ass dreams, right? I woke up early Wednesday morning to find that Pip wasn't in his usual curl-up spot next to me, and...

Somehow my brain knew that the pa-dump in the house was coming from a large chaotic all-black being. (He was doing a rare Insane Pip romp through the house, and onto me.

Here's the original art for that one if you want it!

If you order an original from the store, remember to use DAILYSMILE50 at checkout for 50% off, because you're here which means you rule! Thanks for being here. I hope your weekend includes finding something that was hidden from you, even if you're not an Easter Bunny person. <3

Apparently spider plants give cats a catnip like high when chewed on, jsyk. One of mine ate a spider plant baby. -.-

Minzoku Bokumetsu

These are all FANTASTIC and I did wake up one morning to my friend's borrowed car missing, which is a HELL of a thing (I had forgotten to guest-register it online since it hadn't gotten towed the day before, which was CHRISTMAS)

Thea Koutsoukis

Good afternoon from one of your longtime Aussie readers! Midday is my "ooo GWS has posted" and I usually get to enjoy a Saturday morning coffee and dailies :)

Cathi Andrews

Good afternoon, mate, back at ya! Thoroughly enjoyed this batch of dailies and commentary (as always), but the laugh I laughed at Izzy's photo (sorry Izzy) really made my day.

Laura J Testa-Reyes

Yes, I have done that, taken pictures of my stop, couldn't find my car, looked again at the photo and realized I was in the wrong place. It is a great resource.

William Cole

I love your bamboo-n-ivy planters! Cheap or not, they look rad!

Lucy Bellwood

Mannnnnn these just get better and better every week. This batch is full’a GEMS

Mrs

That last comic really made me smile. I dream like that sometimes too, but without a cat in the house (sadly).

Chris Swain

I’m an Australian member so appreciate your good afternoon. Four day weekend - woot woot!

Oh, gawd, the number of times I've been paid a very nice compliment because someone didn't understand that I'm just CHEAP and or LAZY! To pick one: the casual visitor who complimented my furniture. "You have SO many terrific pieces!" Thank you, but I live in a village among some VERY VERY wealthy property owners and most of the "pieces" you've admired were just left out on the sidewalk for the raccoons (both figurative and literal).

Andy Ihnatko

I love Pacific Rim Tiki God Danielle (April 15, panel 4).

I'm glad that your detectorist was so nice! I enjoy the YouTube channel of a detectorist who I think is actually based in West Virginia ("aquachigger"). He's often digging colonial homesteads and out on little backwoods rivers looking for Civil War relics. Very soothing videos...he's a little like Bob Ross with a hand trowel. Twenty minutes of wading/kayaking along a stream, finding nothing but the odd fishing lure or iron bold. Then he finds like thirty unfired Civil War bullets and he explains that, yeah, he picked this spot because it looked like a good place for soldiers to cross the river and if somebody dropped an entire ammo pouch they probably wouldn't dive under to get it back…

Reminds me of things... Came back from my 50th class reunion, spent a week bopping around the old stomping grounds, got back and found a) I had left the dome light on and the battery was so low it couldn't power the door locks though I could hear it try and b) I left a bag on the shuttle out to the parking lot and had to retrieve it. Lucky me, all I had to do is use the call box to get help and a jump. Unobservant me, I didn't see the call box next to my vehicle and walked over to the one I did see on the other side of the lot. Oh yeah, the exit kiosk didn't work either as the ticket the entry one had given me was printed poorly. The battery still works almost 2 years later, BTW.

Back in my youth, when outhouses were moved (they do fill up), some folks would plant a fruit tree over the filled in pit. Some of the older places had a row of fruit trees and an outhouse at the end of that.

Casey

Haha I love when dreams incorporate the surrounding reality, but it can definitely be unsettling too. I was attempting making a woven small wall out of tree limb trimmings last year, but go interrupted when my dog discovered a nest of baby bunnies (the first of two she found last spring). Maybe this year I'll get to try out some garden weaving! Love yours <3

dcorsetto

Oh yeah, I've been sacrificing all the spider plant babies to Fennel, who luckily will chew on the "low-hanging fruit" before going for the big mamas!

dcorsetto

Ooh that makes me so happy to hear! <3

dcorsetto

Ahh I forgot you were an Aussie! No apologies necessary, Izzy doesn't have a serious bone in her body.

dcorsetto

Thanks!! I'm excited I found a use for all the weeds in my yard, hah!

dcorsetto

OH MAN SAME!! A quarter of my house has been decorated by my well-off neighbors via the alley. I'm counting down to Bulk Trash Week....

dcorsetto

(I got an email notification with a long explanation from you about pizza and I'm glad I got to read it before you altered - I'm guessing? - your comment! Two for one!)

dcorsetto

Oooh that's cool! This guy found three likely outhouse depressions, but I *do* have a lot of fruit trees, too, hmmmmm...

Tom @ Magic Chopstick Games

Oh my god IAD long term parking is the WOOOORST, no matter the occasion Dulles, Duller, Dulles 🫠

Michael Steamweed

I've done the messed-up-parking thing before. Thankfully I've never had my car towed from one of those lots. But I was panicked there that one time I went to an empty lot. Only to re-re-re-look at my picture and see, whoopsie, wrong lot. :P

dcorsetto

I actually don't mind it!! But that's probably a) because I'm comparing it to other options, cost-wise and b) because I don't know any different ;)

Becky Fish

Excellent, well fertilized soil that you do NOT want root crops in? Makes sense to me!

kaitou

Izzy looks like something Dave Kellett drew.

Hugh Eckert

"Insane Pip Romp" would make a good album title.

allanfranta

I would ask your detectorist if he wanted to give that a try? How sensitive are these detectors anyway? Rabbit Hole Alert!!!!!!!!!! Oh ... This might be fun. Also I could find all the metal water pipes and conduit? Maybe get the underwater one? Thanks, Danielle, this will suck us some free time!

allanfranta

Becky, I have no idea how good idea it would be given the diseases of the time? Apples and cherries were good!

allanfranta

Oh yeah, LOVE THOSE WOVEN BEDS! You give me ideas...

Amy Crook

I'm actually going to Go Outside and Do Gardening Things tomorrow and I definitely blame you for part of this willingness. The other half is Dr. Dan actually being enthusiastic this year, and also I got some little claw-gloves so I can dig like a mole. Which is to say, I wish we had some overgrown ivy to make beds out of, that's so cool!

Dirk Bergstrom

Photo evidence of where you parked is brilliant. Thank you for that tip

Melissa Wilson

Googling claw-gloves now, thankyouverymuch!

Chris W.

Has Izzy's dad tried putting a mat under Izzy's food and water dishes? Then maybe Izzy would eat on the mat instead of the carpet. Or has he just shrugged and gotten himself a steam cleaner for the carpet?

dcorsetto

Claw gloves!! That's super fun. If you happen to see anyone whose house has a lot of ivy, put a note on their door asking if you can take it down for them to use! Who knows. :)

dcorsetto

(And I hope you had fun on your Gardening Things day!!)

Claudia D.

OMG! Where have these been all my life? (I’m 75) I just ordered a pair!

Claudia D.

The dog(?) is definitely from another planet.
