Hello hello! I'm leaving for Toronto first thing in the morning Thursday to table at TCAF for the first time since 2018! So I'm scanning these a few days early, and scheduling this post ahead of time.

If it's not Friday when you're reading this, I uhhh did not succeed at scheduling this post correctly! Happy Whateverday it is to you! Alright, let's get into it.

Did any of you have a "blanky?"

... but she may still be out to get me.

This poor skunk blanket has become Fennel's favorite bed and is long overdue for a wash, so this won't be the most flattering photo of it, but:

It just dawned on me that this blanket is almost 45 years old. I guess it could look a LOT worse for an actual literal antique. (It's still a complete rectangle!)

I threw a cookout in the yard after our town's Pride parade, whereupon Mazzy and her parents graced us with their presence (they're busy people so it's a rare gift!). Continuing the "I can't see Mazzy without making a comic about her" tradition:

Memorable! 😬 😬 😬

I managed to fit in one day of gardening this week, which was MANDATORY, because after all the cold weather we've been having, it was finally warm enough to...

I did it six more times. I'm still doing it. Back off, Pip.

It takes 1-2 weeks for sunflowers to germinate, but I'll keep eyeballing them multiple times a day. This one's for sale if you want it! (Use DAILYSMILE50 at checkout for 50% off!)

Thanks for all your Indivisible Pride flag sticker orders this past week! I've reordered double the amount y'all preordered, so if you wanna get some, you can still buy them here! Just $1.65 shipping internationally, $0.73 domestic! I'll have them up at TCAF, too!

Speaking of TCAF, here's me as a kaiju with a helpless maiden tucked under my arm:

YES, near the ZAMBONI ENTRANCE!! Nothing could be more Canadian! It's being held at the Mattamy Athletic Centre this year (the library's under construction), which is a big ol' ice hockey rink. I just found out that the ice will be under a covering bELOW OUR FEET the whole time?!?! So if you go, put on warm socks!!

Hope to see some of y'all there!! <3

Oh yes, I definitely have my original baby blankets. I think I still have 3 in my possession. One of them was clearly a favorite, it looks like scraps of fabric and compressed batting held together with wishes and cobwebs XD I showed it to my 4 yr old the other day and she goes "Mommy, is that broken?" XD

The plants don't start growing out of the soil like the minute right after I plant them?!? What the heck scam is this?!?!?? *table flip

Chris Wichtendahl

Also bring a sweater! I did an ice rink con during the hottest weekend in July one year and nearly froze to death at my booth.

I wish I could go to TCAF. It would be ICE to see you. (Flagrant "Incredibles" reference.)

Yep, I had a blankee...several, in fact. My mom would take a rough wool blanket and then sew a more comfortable cover in various kid-friendly pattern fabrics, using yarn knotted through at various points to connect them inside rather than doing a full quilting. Eventually the inner blanket would start to disintegrate. I got so used to having one despite outgrowing the size (on hot nights, just the too-small blankee was the right size, otherwise it ended up wadded up to block out light and sound or to add extra height to a "sit up in bed" pillow stack), that the last one my mom made for me was when I was in grad school. It has a starry night pattern. It finally started to become too internally fallen-apart about ten years ago, but mom wasn't really into sewing anymore. I use a throw pillow for some of the roles now, but got a baby blanket to put over my legs when it's too cold even with the heat on.

Christina

I do that with seeds, too!!

JOHN W

What a great photo of the Blanky! I should have been able to see it from your drawings, but that 'skunk' looks a lot like a lil' Black and White CAT!! (lifelong cat owner)

William Cole

Have fun in Toronto, Danielle! Don't rampage too hard!

I don't have my original baby blankets, but I do have one that I've had since I moved to a regular bed as a kid (60 years ago). It's not handmade- it's a fake Indian blanket made out of some kind of artificial fiber. It still has a nametag from when I took it to camp.

Stay hydrated! I hate waiting for seeds to germinate. My corn is over my head now and I can count at least 6 ears on one of the plants. Time to plant the 2nd harvest.

My dad was in the navy when I was a kid, and while I don't have any other military brat traits... my favorite blanket as a child was the scratchiest, ugliest navy-issued blanket you can possibly imagine. I don't know what my parents were thinking when they gave it to a tiny child, but once I had it, I never let it go.

You should ride into the convention on a Zamboni throwing trinkets to the masses.

Amy Crook

Zamboni!! Very exciting. We got 12 lilac bushes in that are already a couple of feet tall for making a hedge this weekend! It's pure spite gardening, bc our neighbor is a weirdo who keeps mowing half our back lawn, which we are trying to rewild into ground ivy and clover and other such flowers. So, beautiful hedge! of SPITE!

Tim Pendergast

Is there a venue in Canada that holds more than 20 people that isn't also a hockey rink?

Dean Reilly

Keep an eye on those sunflower seeds, they may spring up while your back is turned!

I know I have at least two baby blankets still: one is this pink thing that a family friend made for me (I absolutely hated pink growing up because *everyone* gave me pink things when I was a kid, the curse of being born a girl in the 80s), and one is this yellow crocheted lace type thing that has a rose in the middle that my mom made for me and was stretched out of shape because I wore it as a cape a lot. I really should wash and try reblocking that to see if it'll go back to its original shape. As for gardening, I'm super excited because my Lemon Boy tomato has fruit growing on it already (hooray for California hardiness zone 9) and I just can't wait for those bad boys to become yellow so I can pick and eat them. I wish I had somewhere to grow sunflowers, but I'll live vicariously through yours. <3

I had this knitted "Kermit" blanket (it was only Kermit green in the lighter green parts but had jagged triangle ends that remind me of Kermit) Also this wild black-and-white... stripe? blanket that was a square of black lines going every which way over a solid white background, sewn onto a bland green/teal back, filled with fluff (so, a puffy blanket) ...but that got ruined when I hit college, so *toss* =(

Tanzerine

Ooh, I never thought of the military angle! My baby blanket was a little wool thing, which I still have, and whose original color is a mystery. It does have more in common with army blankets (except for the color) than anything else.... it's sort of yellow-green now, but I think it once was blue? And in the apparent tradition of most baby blankets, it was given to me by some random person who barely knew me. And I still have it (and love it), 60 + years later...

Minzoku Bokumetsu

I guess that's a comforter? but anything that covers you in bed that's not a sheet is a blanket to me =D

Katherine Sippel

I saw a TikTok of the Shepherdstown Pride Parade the other day. I may have watched it a couple times hoping I would spot you at random. I did not.

Marijah

I've been giving away your stickers at every con we vend at and quickly ran out so I'm thrilled to hear I can get more!!
