As promised, here's a belated polyamory-related comic:

It's hard for me to summarize my feelings about this into six little panels. In fact, the original is covered in correction tape and I re-wrote it three times, so it's not in the store, because it'd be too much work to frankenstein it together into something worth selling.

The center two panels are gendered because this kind of closeness isn't as side-eyed when it's between two women. I can fly to see a female-bodied friend of mine for a week, stay in her bed, we can pee with the door open and talk to each other while one's taking a shower, share long hugs and tell each other "I love you so much," and none of it would be considered weird.

Luckily, I think the reservations we're taught to have between opposite genders get easier to loosen the older we get. There are a lot of "I love you"s in my life between friends these days.

Here's something not remotely related to polyamory:

(Which is to say, when it rains for days and I don't let him outdoors. It's suuuuper rare that Ollie bites anyone!)

All five of my cats have been easy to flip over and give manicures to. The trick is to gently pick 'em up during their afternoon naps when they're especially groggy. ;)

Here's the original for this one! (Scroll down to find your 50% off coupon!)

Last month at TCAF, I fucked up and left a box of books in my car, parked an hour away from the convention. But it made for a nice excuse to have coffee with a GWS reader...

I can't believe that trip was ten years ago. I ended GWS, left my phone at home, hiked to Harper's Ferry, and took a train to live in Toronto for a month. I didn't have a clear reason for all of this, it just felt like the right thing to do at the time. I needed to be off the internet and out of the country.

I've wanted to write about my "unplugged" Toronto trip for years, so I'm going to start drawing little anecdotes about it here in my dailies from time to time. (Here's the original for this comic, before I go on!)

More about the payphone thing...

Where I would rather be outdoors on a warm day without my phone, Rich (Stevens, of Diesel Sweeties fame) would rather be in a cold basement with no windows, surrounded by computer monitors. Despite our differences, we've been good friends for years, and used to do a podcast called Coffee and Cider. We were usually talking about work and creativity and webcomics, but it didn't really have a specific direction.

(Here's the original for this daily!)

Yesterday I met up with my friend Jamie Noguchi and brought along a tote bag full of relics from my 2015 trip: film photos, notepads, the little book of phone numbers that I carried with me everywhere. There aren't a lot of working payphones in Toronto now, but fortunately I took a photo of one from that trip:

Back to the present: I did a crazy thing the other day.

There's a little bump beginning to form on one eyelid, but so far my actual eyeball is okay! Maybe my eyeball isn't allergic to it. Anyway, WISH ME LUCK. Here's the original art!

Apparently my brain goes straight to bananaland when I'm sleeping. I shouldn't be surprised by this, considering how unhinged my dreams tend to be. (Ally Boothroyd is very good at what she does, please trust Luke and Lucy instead of me and my bizarre dreamland version of her.)

If you get my email newsletter you already know this, but I'll be in TWO gallery shows this weekend in Shepherdstown! If you're in the area tonight...

Our Studio Tour will have a show opening at Evolve tonight (Friday) from 5-8. I'll be there, selling daily comics & figure drawing collections, along with my tourmates, who will be selling everything from baskets to jewelry to paintings to ironwork, glasswork, woodwork, and fiberwork.

Skull City Studio will have an opening reception Saturday from 3-6 for Art in Bloom, which pairs 12 pieces of art with 12 floral artists. I have a colorful watercolor figure study in there and I have NO IDEA what the floral arrangement will look like?!? I'm excited! I'll be there for the reception, so come check out this new gallery and hang out with us!

And my friend Michael Davis (my partner in figure drawing crime) will be debuting his new piece Madame XY at his gallery, Badgerhound, all weekend as well. Go check it out and inquire about the piece, it's really cool. :)

That's it! I'll stop taking up your whole Friday now. WAIT JUST KIDDING, here's a garden status update:

The sunflowers against the wall are finally as tall as me!

Those kale plants are exactly as large as they look. I can't eat it all, and if you know me, a Voracious Kale Eater, that's saying something.

These zinnias are literally called ZOWIE and y'know what? They were right to name them that.

I've finally learned to hide my basil from the sun. All four plants taste as good as they look!

Alright, NOW I'm done. Catch you next Friday, or if you're local, maybe I'll catch you this weekend in town at a gallery! Have a good Saturday-Sunday, my dears!

Your garden looks like something out of a Ghibli movie 😍

Fred Harper

Your garden looks great! And this group of daily’s was/is nicely intimate!

I like that the empty payphone frame has a Mobile Phone ad behind it in the window. In Vader Voice: "Now I am the Master!" Also, what are those things hanging over making an arch? And what do you call that color? (besides amazing and gorgeous)

Any update on the compost heap?

Josh Smift

I like your thoughts about polyamory, and encourage you to write more of them.

Pete Jordan

I can't really understand how people *aren't* polyam. But there again, I don't underatand people not being demi either… 🥰 Missy only bites me when she wants to; it's a trust thing. I trust her not to break skin (she doesn't 🙂). When she's done, she flenseas my hand, or arm, and purrs. Bless! 🐈‍⬛

Josh Smift

I'm confused by your poison ivy protocol, though! The theory behind panel 2 (hee hee, butts) is that your clothes will be contaminated, and so you'll come inside and chuck them directly into the washer? But how do you take them off to get them into the washer? The "gloves" are presumably contaminated too, so maybe you keep them on, but it seems like it'd be impossibly hard to remove your clothes without touching any part of your skin whatsoever with the contaminated gloves. But if you ditch the gloves before the clothes, then your hands will be touching your contaminated clothes, which doesn't seem like what you want either, since then your hands would be contaminated. I couldn't tell from panel 2 if you've still got the gloves on (what are your arms doing there?). Inquiring minds want to know!

The payphone stuff reminded me of an art project with LA payphones called The Goodbye Line (@goodbye line on IG) where you can use the phone to send a message, say a goodbye, etc. Engaging with a disappearing piece of public life, it’s bittersweet!

Lucy Bellwood

Damnnn this is such a rich post! So much work! So many embedded images! You're a beast. Also I cannot BELIEVE that Toronto trip was so many years ago. Lovely to see little snippets of that time rolling through here now <3

John Kovalic

The Poly strip hit me SO hard. That's fantastic, and if you ever make a print of it (I notice the original's not for sale), I'm so there.

Amy Crook

Your Ollie comic reminds me of getting Mal, who did indeed wish to sniff everything in the house twice a day as promised, but was actually not shy at all once she was home to HER humans.

Michael Steamweed

We hates the poison ivy, yesss, we does, preciousss. We hates it.

Hannah K

The rightmost kale plant evokes "crinoid" which are those - not actually a plant but an animal, deep sea creature. Kale gaining that kind of "animal" sentience is mildly terrifying. As someone who has "a lot of feelings" I refuse to let society tell me I can't tell my friends that I love them, regardless of gender. Who has time for societal bullshit! But your brief summary of feelings is good, as someone who doesn't identify as polyam

!!! Re: your July 10th comic: I heard about this phenomenon on the Stuff You Should Know podcast and apparently it happens to more people? The episode is here if you're curious: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcUHWz-b_uU (it's also on loads of platforms but I figure everyone has youtube?)

Jack Foy

Oh no, the poison ivy! Might I suggest a whole face shield, not just goggles?

Andy Ihnatko

Payphones are among the highest mountains of what divides generational experience. People born after 2000 can understand them on a purely academic level ("People didn't have cellphones. So there were these public phones everywhere and you dropped coins into them to make a phone call. Got it."). But it's impossible to convey how deeply integrated they were into how society worked.

Andy Ihnatko

Your garden looks like what would happen if Dr. Suess met Willy Wonka, they hit it off, and then bought a place together.

Julie Watt

I had one cat who was so chill about nail clipping he once refused to get out of my lap when I was done, so I plopped his sister on top of him and started doing her nails!

Tudza

You could probably find a pay phone to install in your house. Then you could either get landline service from a phone company or cable company or sign up for a voice over IP service. Closest I've come to that is my 1920 Westinghouse I re-wired for modern jacks and a tiny touch tone dialer because I did not expect my line to support rotary phones. Now I'd have to get a box that worked with my cell phone. https://tudza.org/Western_Electric_1920_Model_202_phone.png

Double gloving! Take off the first pair before you take off your clothes. Or, if you’re me, wash the outer gloves like you’re washing your hands, remove those to a sunny spot, then disrobe. Superpower of bedside nurses: disrobing while avoiding contamination.

Tim Pendergast

Ugh, poison ivy. I was hyper allergic to it when I was a kid and pretty much just had to smell it to get it everywhere. One time I got it in my eye, which is even worse than you imagine. My eye was swollen shut when I woke up and wouldn't open for like 2 hours. It being the 70s, my parents still shoved me off to school, where my classmates (I already had no friends) tormented me relentlessly.

Tim Pendergast

My only experience with poly-ness was back in the 90s when my ex wanted me to be his side guy in his triad, which was just too weak a connection for me. The other problem was there was no chance of it becoming a quad as the other 2 guys couldn't stand me and made very little secret of it. Not to mention all the reasons we had broken up in the first place. :P

Tudza

I'm ordering a CATTERY sign ( a real word since 1785 or so ) for the cat adoption area of my daughter's doggie day care.

Josh Smift

Ah, that makes a lot of sense. I'm reminded of a Martin Gardner puzzle: A surgeon needs to operate on three patients, and has to avoid any cross-contamination between them, and also to avoid being contaminated by any of the patients, but only has two pairs of gloves. What do they do?

dcorsetto

Those are amaranth and they're my favorite unexpected addition to the garden! I wish I had a good color name for that because I'd like to find it in every color art tool I use.

dcorsetto

Whoa, this is SUCH an undertaking!

dcorsetto

Fair questions! You throw the the "gloves" into the trash immediately (resisting the urge to reuse the elastic bands). Once you've taken everything off, you kinda just assume your entire body (including your previously-unpoisoned hands) is contaminated, which is why you touch NOTHING - not the door to the washer, no doors at all - on your way to the shower. I guess the shower dials are touched by your hands, but so far that hasn't created any problems! Touching your probably-contaminated clothes with your hands is far, far less dangerous than touching actual poison ivy. So I'm not too concerned about it; the first thing I do in the shower is scrub Dawn on my hands, in between my fingers, over and over again, like three times. After that, I can assume my hands are probably safe enough to Dawn the rest of my body, from the top down in case I'm washing any poison from, say, my chin down to my toes. I hope that answers your questions! Contamination from light touches of ivy seems to be solvable by a scrubbing of Dawn; the reason I have the bag-gloves on is that DIGGING the ivy into my hands is way different than just touching a shirt that has a little poison on it.

dcorsetto

Aww thank you, John. :) If I frankenstein it to something worth selling, I'll let you know! <3

dcorsetto

Ohh!! I'll listen to it tonight, ty!!

dcorsetto

I've also considered Hiring Someone Who Is Not Allergic To It, but a face shield *would* be cheaper!

dcorsetto

HAH!! That's a hell of an image, thank you!

dcorsetto

I can NOT HANDLE the idea of poison ivy eyyyyyee that sounds awfulllll!!!

Cat

Lolllll at the yoga nidra

Cat

Yo my dad once (in his early farm-owning years) burned a burn pile that had dried and old poison ivy vibes in it. Imagine poison ivy in your throat and lungs 😱

Cat

Or safety glasses

Glenn Fitzpatrick

“It could pass for the real thing with ease to most listeners … until that moment you realize everything is just a hair accentuated like a fever dream or an acid trip or a Dali montage in the middle of a Hitchcock film,” said Matt Spiegel, a sports talk show host in Chicago. “Letting your consciousness toggle between relaxing with apathy, and listening intently to the high production values and elevated aesthetic sensibilities is a great way to pass the hours.” 😂 https://cronkitenews.azpbs.org/2024/06/18/northwoods-sleep-baseball-radio-offers-insomniacs-fall-asleep/

Minzoku Bokumetsu

(admittedly, it's about on-body, idk about eyes but may as well try)

David Neale-Lorello

I have to go on two to three rounds of steroids if I get exposed to poison ivy and the back of my yard is sprouting it, so every time I mow, I cringe. So far, I've avoided Contamination, but your method seems plausible (definitely with goggles!).

William Cole

I have fond memories of Coffee & Cider! I also admire you mighty basil babies!

Tim Pendergast

IIRC This happened to one of my uncles. Just awful.

Tim Pendergast

It was! And this was in the days before there was any treatment before calamine lotion. I think the pills came along not long after my last infection.

dcorsetto

That's the video that inspired me to just go for it!! (And then scrub the fuck outta my body!

Indira

Finally had time to sit down and read your newsletter and just want to say I always read the funny unsubscribe instructions you wrote!

I read lots about poly from different people over the years, but have always felt it was something I wasn't built for because communication and time management can be quite hand-wavey for me. Yours is the first to express it in exactly this way, where I wonder if perhaps I could apply the label to myself, because I already love many friends very deeply in a non-platonic way, except we operate as platonic. But it can feel too little to say we are friends? I also have a tattoo of a heart on fire, because people are beautiful and wonderful and I can crush hard and long without reaching a point that others define as a relationship. The diversity of humans and emotions and how we express and navigate them is sooooo cool. Some great brain fodder for allowing myself to be more broadly me, without needing to label, but freedom to do so if I wish. <3

dcorsetto

Cathi, this was such a joy to read. :) Thank you!

dcorsetto

(And yeah, the communication element of being poly... well, it's something that should exist in ANY relationship, but it's so urgent and necessary in a poly relationship. The experience definitely gave me a leg-up on saying the hard stuff to people I love, because I HAD to do it.)

Yfke

I listened to it again and it's only in the last 6 minutes that it's mentioned at all 🙈 Sorry - the rest is interesting too at least? 😬😅
