HELLO and happy Daily Comics Day! I'm a little loopy this morning because I have been up since SIX which is unusual for me. I'M HYPED! WATCH OUT!

(More quietly) here is a daily comic for you. Do you know what a hairless dog feels like? If you don't, but you want to, I have good news.

It's kinda weird that we're allowed to touch pets with a level of platonic intimacy that a lot of couples don't even have, right?

Here's the original art for this comic if you want it! (Remember to scroll down for your coupon code!)

And here's Quetz right now, this very instant:

Lately on Instagram I've been getting this weird "sponsored" content of some local dude who reviews food, and... well, this is me calling him out, SORRY LOCAL GUY. 😬

I think about this ALL THE TIME. How do people with crazy-face not know?? BUT THEN: what if I have a crazy face, and I don't know?!

Luckily, I think Pip would tell me. Bluntly. Often.

Here's the original art!

Quetza's an expert darter, so he's added an element of complication to this already complicated indoor/outdoor pet household. It's like having too many leaks and not enough fingers to stop them all up with.

Apparently starlings have more than one round of babies?! DO WE REALLY NEED THIS MANY STARLINGS.

(I did eventually get EVERYONE indoors. For those wondering, I can leave Pip right next to a tiny creature, because he has ZERO TALENT at killing, which is one of my favorite things about him.)

Here's the very-involved artwork for this comic!

This next one is a straight-up excuse to share my favorite gluten-free vegan cookie recipe with you! If you're a GWS fan, you may remember that Erin came up with this cookie concoction over a decade ago. (And a fan kindly made an easier, gluten-and-dairy-eating version for people who don't have things like "arrowroot starch" in their pantry.)

I came up with this recipe (with massive help from my friend Heather's book Pantry to Plate) specifically so that I could use up the delicious pears from my pear tree.

See also: every time 1.5 bananas go brown.

Here's the original art for this one! If you buy the original art, I'll also send you my old recipe card (I have two of them) with a coconut flake alteration added (optional).

I have more good news:

SUCCESS.

This photo was taken a bit later, after the heads had started to bow. But you get the idea.

(Pay no mind to the absolutely disgusting windowsill towel I never clean.)

(Also pay no mind to how large Fennel is in the window of that first panel, whoooppppss.)

Here's the original art for the sunflower one!

As with any original art in my shop, make sure you use DAILYSMILE50 at checkout for 50%, as a thank-you for being a Patreon member of mine. :) (Originals are usually $50 each, so it's $25 off for members!)

Now it's time for me to "walk" Quetza (he's not really a leash-walker yet) back to Luke's and drive to Harper's Ferry to take a tour of a haunted IoOF lodge with my former intern Teppi, as you do on a Friday afternoon.

I hope your haunted tour of a secret society's lodge with your former intern goes well today, too. Thanks for being here and letting me tell you about my quiet little world. 💙

Love the recipe card as much as the comic - nice!

Do we need this many starlings? No. In fact we don't need ANY starlings. They are an invasive pest!

Laura Light

When i lived in a house with a lemon tree, the only way to use all the lemons was lemonade. Maybe you can make pear juice!

Laura J Testa-Reyes

The California quail have a second batch every year, about this time. I figure it is because the hawks have eaten the earlier babies, but who knows.

As someone who gets 14% of his weekly exercise by petting the dogs who pass by the neighborhood bench where I'm reading: how does Quetz' lack of fur affect your technique? It seems like "running your hand along its side" will just pull and stretch the skin, and I can't even imagine the analogue to "scritch the ruff of fur around the ears and neck."

William Cole

Having seen you in person, I'm happy to say you do not have default Crazy-Face. Also, WOW, that's a lot of cinnamon in those cookies! (Not a complaint.)

Andy Ihnatko

If I didn't know that sunflowers can grow that high, I'd look at that and say "Dude, if you want to put up security cameras covering your backyard, just put them on the house and don't even bother trying to hide them. It's fine. Or if you think you _have_ to hide them, at least put them inside something less obvious than a bunch of ludicrously tall fake sunflowers."

Allison Matthas

I have had one cat for 8 years and recently got her a playmate. Corralling one darty cat was already enough but now we too experience the "one in, one out, one in, one out" situation! Luckily they are scared of stranger so they dash inside when someone comes down the hall. 😂

Amy Crook

Someday our pear tree will be allowed by the local birds to make actual grown-up pears and we, too, can try these cookies!

The first one reminds me of when my spouse took in a doggo that needed rehomed and I couldn't change in front of him for a month. 😅 I was just like - "sorry, babes, I don't know you, this feels weird." Sarah Tidwell (@inkydragon on instagram) has a pretty neat starling. They can make pretty much any sound they want to, it seems like? But they choose THAT ONE. 😅

Fred Harper

The sunflowers are awesome!! Touching hairless dogs or cats is uncomfortably intimate and I’m never prepared!

David Neale-Lorello

Answer to your question: No. We do not need so many starlings. (I love watching their murmurations, but they are bloody obnoxious birds.) And my heart skipped at beat at the sight of your sunflowers! #jealous

Zed

Those sunflowers are so magical

Tim Pendergast

Thanks for clarifying whose dog Quetz is. I was very unsure when you first introduced him. I think the difference in touching humans vs. pets is that pets for the most part like being touched that much more than humans!

Tudza

The neighbor's plum tree dropped plums all over the yard one year. Five gallons of plum wine worth. It was very pretty. Would have turned out well if the big plastic fermenter had been stored where it was warm. The default final product was at least drinkable.

Pille

My sister and her kids had hairless guinea pigs once. I had to get used to the feeling to, it does feels so intimate. But gawd, they was so cute! I had to check this post twice because I had to look at cute puppy pictures one more time <3

dcorsetto

Yeah, I'm just the overly-involved stepmom!

dcorsetto

Hahaha there's definitely a lot to get used to with all this SKIN in the house suddenly!

dcorsetto

Ahh those bird bastards!! The squirrels get a number of ours, but then... Ollie gets a number of the squirrels, so... 😬

dcorsetto

The seed packet calls them *checks packet*... SUNZILLA.

dcorsetto

WHEW, thank you! (And yeah, I go hard with cinnamon & ginger in baked goods, garlic in basically everything else. 4x the recommended amount or gtfo!)

dcorsetto

Honestly? It's really nice to be able to rub a dog in ALL directions instead of having to restart your pet every stroke! Easily 200% the petting.

dcorsetto

I blended the pear before adding it to the cookie dough, and that on its own was delicccccious!! I'll blend up any leftover pears and eat it like applesauce. :)
