Happy Friday to you all! I hope you can feel your fingers today. Mine have been in and out of numbness. We're firmly in the Below Freezing section of the year now.

One of the painters who's renting the back of my house for studio space (I swear I'll come up with a smoother way to address them one day!), is Charlotte, who's been itching to get back into figure drawing for awhile now. Michael was kind enough to invite her to join our figure drawing crew the last two weeks.

(Forgive the black bars, I don't live in the fine art world at all and I have no idea what these titles were.)

I know he told me about this when it happened, but it didn't sink in until our model and Charlotte both stopped Michael's casual chat to confirm: ON THE MOON??

Yeah, on the moon.

Here's one about that aforementioned finger-numbing cold:

I know it's sorta cringy to talk about "drinking enough water" these days, but I literally just never drank water unless it was caffeinated or intoxicating, and I can't think of anything I'm doing differently now, so: DRINK YOUR WATER.

Here's the original art for this one! Remember to scroll down for your 50% off coupon!

(I did a little googling about the use of the word "hydrate" over the past few decades, and found this article podcast transcript particularly interesting if that's your kind of thing!)

I posted this next one early since it was timely, so you may have already seen it here or on Instagram:

Don't get me started.

The original for this one has already been requested by multiple people; it's available now for $200, and the full amount will be donated to the Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota. (If you purchase this piece and would like me to donate to a different org that supports immigrants and/or protestors in Minnesota that you'd rather I donate to, I'm open to that!)

Here's just a tiny homage to my wonderful Great-Aunt Di in Maine...

I thought that maybe I'd tricked myself into seeing something that wasn't actually there, until I asked my mom about it a few years ago! I never even met this woman?! (Note to my brother: sorry if this is the first time you're learning this!!)

Here's the original art!

Scott Adams just died, and I think I've only ever written about this interaction with him in text form. It seemed appropriate to make a comic about it.

He did a nice thing for an aspiring cartoonist. And I'm glad I never interacted with him again. Rest in silence, Scott.

Here's the original art if you'd like it.

FWIW, Basket Case 3: The Progeny was the best Basket Case movie, as rated by both Ryan and myself.

And yes, you can say "sally forth" without meaning it in a military kind of way! But it does have its roots in military use, bleh blah boringgggg.

Here's the original art for this one! Remember to use DAILYSMILE50 at checkout for 50% off, thankyouverymuch for being a patron of mine! <3

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to check the pipes in the back of the house to make sure they have not frozen. Have an excellent weekend, friends!

I like the juxtaposition of the Scott Adams comic and the one featuring "Sally Forth" because that's how my brain works. Yay free association!

Luke Steichen

Being in U.S. Army intelligence led me to rediscover my love for medieval arms and military history (fuck war and people who romanticize it), and boy howdy are there are a lot of modern phrases that trace back to weapons, conflict, and the military.

Monica Gallagher

I have so many thoughts! How about "Artist in Rear-idence" for Charlotte? (har har) I can't believe you had a Shadow Person for a great-gma, and I too used to force myself to read all the newspaper comics including Apartment 3G XD One of my favorite, all time jokes was made about Apt. 3G on The Golden Girls, VERY NICHE and I appreciate it to this day! Your ICE comic was beautiful and succinct, may it be seen far and wide, and may us comickers find more ways to reach people with these messages! <3

Zed

The hydrating might not be it! There are hormonal changes in the late 20's that are rarely mentioned and could have changed your skin's moisture/oiliness. Which is not to say don't drink water but

dcorsetto

SAME!! I've been trying to get more succinct in the text commentary on these, otherwise I would've made some joke about that, too. ;)

dcorsetto

Once you see it, they start poppin up everywhere! Just like baseball terms in the States, I've found.

dcorsetto

Ahaha I SO appreciate a comics crossover joke on the freaking Golden Girls!! Even without reading that one, I would have appreciated a joke about it there!

dcorsetto

OooOOoooOOooohh well damn!! I mean yeah I'm still glad I actually drink water now, ha. :) But yeah, I hadn't considered that at all.

dcorsetto

Do you actually have enough liquid in you to make that melty emoji??

Chelsea Watson

I love the pun for Artist in Rear-idence. I was thinking 'my studio tenent' which sums it up more clinically.

William Cole

You're right, you've been wasting your life not referring to your "friend who has art on the MOON". Constantly.

Tudza

You may refer to me as "Your fan who has art on 1200 wrists" then. Sounds like a good number, but the people that make money on this one site are in the 10-20K range.

Tim Pendergast

Seems like hydration is having the opposite effect on me as my dietitian has me drinking 48 oz. of water a day and my hands are more raw than ever. More likely the real cause is that now that I'm retired I spend more time at home with electric heat.

Douglas Appelt

Old castles & forts had small, usually hidden passageways with guarded/secure doors at both ends called "sally ports" that troops could sneak out to attack enemy troops that were assaulting the main gate, (or were encamped around the castle). When the troops went forth from the these portals, they "sallied forth"! How that became a name for a comic strip I have no idea. (other than just a simple play on words?) Language is weird.

Amy Crook

It's so cold here, too! Brrrr. No matter who started the hydration craze, I notice a definite uptick in yawns and lagginess if I don't hydrate, so my water app and I will stay deeply in llama love.

Andy Ihnatko

I have friends like that. They're telling a story about this AWESOME new dosa place that opened up near where they work, and we're all nodding along about the fillings, and someone who's kind of new to the group explodes. "GO BACK. WHAT?" "...I was really hungry because it was a super-long day at work?" "STILL FURTHER" "…because we found a lot of problems with the workflow the aerospace contractor I work for is developing?" "ONE MORE" "I was stuck in an EVA suit for like eight hours, in the neutral buoyancy tank at NASA, performing a simulated panel replacement on a full-sized mockup of the International Space Station...?" "YES THAT YOU SKIPPED OVER THE INTERESTING PART" "…didn't I mention that they had like five kinds of chutneys…?" (And the rest of us are like "But getting back to the chutney: was it too coconut-ey? Or just coconut-ey enough?")

NJGR

I once had an international student ask me why every idiom in the US referred back to guns or gambling, and I've been thinking about that ever since.

dcorsetto

Whoooa yeah, guns, too. Hmmm I'd have to have the gambling ones pointed out to me I think!

dcorsetto

Well now I'm intrigued! Do you make watches? Bracelets?

dcorsetto

Oohhh I'd written off the fact that my old apartment had baseboard heating! I wonder if that was part of it, too...

NJGR

My phrasing that triggered it (!) was, Your best bet would be to...," and it literally never occurred to me how much gambling terminology we use until that moment. I became much more literal in my work language to avoid so many terms that are unfamiliar or even offensive to the people I'm talking to regularly.

Paul W.

I love knowing where words and sayings come from - until I suddenly don't.

Chris Mac.

yeah, fun sayings like "Son of a Gun" and "The whole 9 yards" come from the military. I used to know a lot more, when I was younger and was supposed to know such things. The ICE one definately hits home.

Amy ☣

I just about died laughing at the last panel on the Scott Adams comic. I am genuinely glad you got him on a not shitty day, and I'm even more glad you never had to interact with him again.

Krysten Devro

I love telling people about "the whole 9 yards", because most people assume it's an (American) football reference. Nobody ever guesses the actual origin. (I mean, who would? It's pretty obscure.) ...and, yeah. I've been wondering where all the "I need my guns in case the government turns on its people" people are now... and suspecting a lot of them are in ICE. Apparently "its people" meant "people who are just like me" and nobody else.

Kate Caturjelly

on the language note, I had to refresh myself on "cued up" vs "queued up" from that last comic – I've been using "queued up" in the sense of "this is what's next in line to do/watch", but "cued" as in "ready to play" is more accurate! wonder if this is one of those where you hear it before you see it and get the wrong homophone with a backported meaning! anyway thank you bc I love a language rabbit hole: https://grammarphobia.com/blog/2020/09/cue-queue.html

Minzoku Bokumetsu

I mean, back in ye olden days, what did we have the most of? Fighting and gambling 🤷

Minzoku Bokumetsu

That's one of the nicer memorials I've read! "He was so nice to me once! Glad I never met my hero!" also YIKES on the ICE strip, for its accuracy (related incident at work today that I prolly shouldn't discuss even anonymously online)

Ursus Ridens

With the "I need these guns" strip, you hold up our wold to us. But it's painful that you need to.

Michael Steamweed

No logical argument that has ethical assumptions at its base (such as "the us executive branch should not summarily kill us citizens without due process") will work with the 2a-fanatic gun-nut crowd. They've never been about the guns or against govt tyranny; they've always been about the right white conservative people being in charge of the tyranny.

Dave Stebbins

"Rest in silence" is an absolutely amazing turn of phrase. I need to remember that for future use.

Chris W.

Scott Adams had a similar incident when he was just starting out in cartooning: he wrote a letter to some professional who encouraged him to submit his work to syndicates. So he was paying it forward to you, Danielle!

dcorsetto

Aw I didn't know that! I wish I knew which cartoonist it was...

dcorsetto

I had "queued up" penciled out first! I'm glad I've become less egotistical about spelling, and started doubting myself in my comics; I've learned a LOT of phrasing and spellings that I was doing wrong all along!

dcorsetto

Oohhh!! I remembered your digital watch faces, but it never occurred to me that they could be used on a smart watch! Now it all makes sense. :)

Chris W.

I poked around a bit, but I can't find where I heard that, sorry.

Cathi Andrews

I'm sorry, but when you finished with a note about checking the pipes at the back of the house, I was fully waiting for a new furtively-unearthed shadow-relative.

BrenaMarie

While I was in Texas visiting family at the end of December, I started drinking more water. And when I got back home, I kept doing it. It's now been a month and my clothes are fitting more loosely and I'm just like "WATER DID THIS?!" because I've changed nothing else and it's CRAZY.
