Hello, pals! Perhaps you live somewhere that's hasn't been frozen for two weeks? I'm still wishing you a happy Frozen Friday, if for nothing else, to get you in the mood for today's first comic. You ready?

You're not ready. Put a heated blanket on your lap.

Okay, now you're ready.

And they were! I left home for one night, and came home to frozen pipes. Honestly I may have caught it too late if Ryan hadn't peed on ice and then told me about it.

Original art is here if you want it! Remember to scroll to the bottom of this page for your 50% off coupon!

I'll tell you the outcome of the Frozen Pipes Story later. Spoiler: it's WET. But not the sexy kind.

As I mentioned last week, Hourly Comic Day was pushed back from February 1st to February 8th. I wanted to finish mine early and share them here, but I haven't had time, so I'll finish them on the 8th alongside everyone else. And then you'll know all about my pipes (again: not sexy).

Since I'm still chronicling Feb 1st for HCD, you'll see a bit of this next comic in those Hourlies, too:

Good thing, too, because Heather's immaculate dining room looked as though a child with very discerning taste in detritus had run around in it after rolling down a hill.

I've decided to start making comics about the health fears that I haven't been telling anyone about. (They're all fairly benign, don't worry. I don't think they're cancer.) (Shit that's the very thing you get cancer for, isn't it. For saying "don't worry, I don't think it's cancer." I take it back, it's probably cancer.)

Anyway, I haven't been to an optometrist in over a decade and it shows.

Does anyone else have An Eye Thing? I can't even watch Luke put in his contacts. Definitely can't look at Eye Stuff in the horror movies Ryan and I watch. He knows to let me hide behind him whenever there's Eye Stuff.

I doubt I need surgery, but I wish they could just remove my brain and then put it back in when all the Eye Stuff is over. And when I say "Eye Stuff" in this context, I mean that one test where they blow a puff of air into your eyeball. UGH!! Just let me go to my appointment hammered already.

Here's the original if you'd like to own it!

I have good news about that ladybug problem I had last week!

Here's the original art for this one!

I can't decide which cat would be most likely to cannibalize the others. Pip, with spite and intention? Ollie, a slave to his hunting instincts? Fennel, the one with all the street cred?

Speaking of Fennel's street cred, check this shit out:

Pip straight-up DISAPPEARED. Fennel? Leapt STRAIGHT TO THE SOURCE OF THE DISTURBANCE. I'm so proud of her. I hadn't seen her tail that fluffed in awhile!

Here's the original art for this one!

If you wanna buy any of the original art in the store, make sure you use your Patreon discount DAILYSMILE50 at checkout for 50% off!

That's it for now. I'm having some neighbors over for SOUP this weekend, I recommend you do the same this month! I invited them with this little invitation, which I hand lettered in watercolor and old crusty masking fluid, because everything I do needs to be on hard mode. I thought you'd enjoy seeing it.

Oh, right, I guess I need to tell some people what to bring, too.

I sincerely hope that those of you who are also in a "winter wonderland" right now are able to warm your mitts on a bowl of some tasty soup very soon!

DO go to the eye doctor immediately and get that checked. I've had eye surgery (for cataracts) and find it far less traumatizing than going to the dentist! You're very much on the young side for cataracts but you never know.

Boum

Yep, go get that eye checked!! Signed: A cyclops

Margaret Lutz

Omg, I just moved to Toronto into one of the craziest winters they've had in a long time (apparently). And yes! I made soup last weekend! (leek + potato + white bean :) )

Margaret Lutz

Literally I don't think it's been above freezing since I arrived and the University campus has closed twice due to snow...

Casey

Omigosh a Soup Party sounds like the best idea ever. So does a seed exchange! I'm definitely going to do both those things with my friends this year <3

Crushbot (security*)

I don't have a constant cloudy spot, but I do get one in one of my eyes about 30-45 minutes before I get an ocular migraine.

dcorsetto

We are opposite people when it comes to traumatizing medical stuff! I kind of (feel free to judge me for this) ENJOY going to the dentist? Even the visits that require a local anesthetic... idk, it's just never bothered me. Eye Stuff... woof, I can't imagine ever being okay with eye surgery. THAT SAID, I'm very happy for you that you got cataract surgery and it wasn't terrible!

dcorsetto

You know I've been thinking of you this whole month as it's become more of a problem!!

dcorsetto

I just audibly oooOOoooOOed at that soup! Delicious!

dcorsetto

Nice of it to warn you, but uff, sorry to hear it!

Tom @ Magic Chopstick Games

As someone who has very, VERY similar feelings about his teeth: the only thing worse than hearing “this needs to be fixed” is hearing “this could have been fixed”… ❤️

allanfranta

My right eye has a blob just off center which I acquired back in 1993. I thought something had got detached at the time and was basically told there wasn't anything obvious wrong with my eye, but that -the vitreous body that resides within our eyes changes as we age and can draw away from the retina- (use that bit for your web search). It appears to be smaller than it was originally, basically I can ignore it.

allanfranta

Oh yeah, Vegi Pea Soup! With Sourdough Bread!

William Cole

Yeah, as unpleasant as fixing things now might be, fixing worse things later is never a good trade.

NJGR

Eyes seem too squishy to do anything with, so I'm right there with you when it comes to eye horrors. Leave the eyes alooooone. - jess

William Cole

I've made soup a few times since the current Fimbulwinter began: a sausage/lentil/spinach soup that's one of my go-to meals & a new-to-me black bean soup where I overdid it on the chipotle peppers. I finally got the heat under control with some rice & a dolop of yogurt, and then it was pretty delicious.

Megan Serenco

I laughed long and loud at the comic of Fennel ready to hold the defense, and also, *awwww* Fennel’s awesome

Pete Jordan

Don't talk to me about faded spots in eyesight 😟. Two bouts of optic neuritis here, one in each eye; I sincerely hope you're suffering from somefhing less exotic 👀💕

Boum

I hope it's nothing!

David Neale-Lorello

I think I've said here before, I LOVE milkweed. Not least because people like me with brown thumbs (no, not THAT kind of brown thumb...) can't kill them, but mostly because they're huge, they have amazing flowers that smell fabulous, and I love the seeds and pods. Been fascinated by them since I was a kid. Haven't seen any Monarchs on mine, though (in, what, four years? five years? of having them); someone told me that it's not true that they only eat milkweed, so I dunno, but I love the milkweed anyway.

Crushbot (security*)

It's a pain to deal with the cloudy spot for that long, I can't imagine having it constantly. Please go to the eye doctor, Danielle!

Erik Greenfrost

We also have a "guard cat" who would be absolutely useless in an actually home invasion but with a door in the way he makes a lot of noise!

Erik Greenfrost

Also... I think it was nearly 70 in SF yesterday? I had friends going to the beach ... #SorryEastCoast #CaliSun ☀️🌈

Amy Crook

It is so very winter, but, we got our house re-insulated awhile back and it makes SUCH a difference omg. Also, I wish our ice sculptures would fall naturally, we get huge icicles that have to be whacked off with a mallet. Brr.

Chelsea Watson

Over here in Australia, it's definitely not frozen! It's been a heat wave on and off for two weeks, and around 38°C - 40°C

Prettydragoon

Yikes! Frozen pipes are bad news. It is known even here in the sunny south of Finland, where we're basking in -15°C. To me, the only good thing about it being that cold is that if it snows, the snow is so light and fluffy you can just brush it off your car. And I did just have some nice pea soup yesterday, as is the way of my people.

Minzoku Bokumetsu

I was JUST thinking I should order some soup for dinner! I think I ended up getting "warm cookie" instead, which is prolly a mistake but at least a $2 mistake

Minzoku Bokumetsu

I also enjoy the dentist? I mean, maybe not ENJOY, but it's a solid hour where I'm OBLIGATED to lie down and do nothing (except sometimes keeping my mouth open is hard)

Tim Pendergast

I have been getting the "blow a puff of air into your eyeball" test since I was a kid, as it is the test for glaucoma, which runs in my mother's family, so while I'm used to it, I am not fond of it. Speaking of eyes and health fears, 6 months ago, my eye doctor thought she saw the beginning of a cataract and other possible diabetic damage and therefore wanted me back in 6 months rather than the usual year. Luckily, everything was fine but now I have a new worry: This was part of a lot of good health news recently and now I have that old Irish fear of too much good news means something really bad is around the corner. I can hear my mother's voice in my head telling me to look out! The phrase that haunts my thoughts is "All this joy must be paid for."

Tim Pendergast

Fennel is a tortie, so is always spoiling for a fight! ;)

Underpants and Overbites

Pat has an eye thing too! He can't stand hearing about any eye related injuries / procedures, but beyond that, he can't stand eye close ups in movies. He looks away until I tell him the camera has moved on. You're not alone!

Sherri French

I have an Eye Thing too! Can't stand anything touching my eyes, so I refuse to wear contacts. I also hate doing eye drops. I would rather go to the dentist than the eye doctor. So OF COURSE I get diagnosed with glaucoma and have to do eye drops 3 times a day and see my eye doctor every 3 months for pressure checks. I'm living my own nightmare. ;_;

dcorsetto

What a cool club we're in!! Omg I'm SO SORRY you got the script for the thing you HATE!! Aauugh you have my sympathies!! I've gotten better at eye drops, but I remember being a tween and having to be HELD DOWN by several nurses to give me eyedrops for my horrendous allergies. I was laughing uncomfortably the whole time going "ha ha I swear I want this ha ha ha I just can't let you do it to me ha ha ha!"

dcorsetto

PAT!! I feel you bro!! The phobia is reeeeeaaal!!

dcorsetto

Mmm what a wonderful thing to love! This same friend gave me some started Hairy Balls milkweed (lolololol) and I was surprised to find DOZENS of monarch caterpillars on them! The common milkweed that was intentionally planted around my town, otoh, had NOTHING. Not sure what makes them decide which milkweed plants to chow down on, but I hope you get some this year!

dcorsetto

I wish I had the stomach to look that up and find out what you've got, but I don't... but the one thing I KNOW you've got is: my sympathies. I hope it's not debilitating for you!!

dcorsetto

Hahaha yes!! It doesn't hurt that my dentist and all his hygienists are super chill and friendly.

allanfranta

I think it's very subjective, with an N of 1?

Pete Jordan

Thanks! Optic nerve jnsulation rot, generally a manifestation of MS (that I probably, but not certainly, have). I'm good, but down to under one eye's worth of vision, between the two, which is why I don't drive any more, and read far, far less than I wish I still could… PITA, but I can live with it 🙂

David Neale-Lorello

Oooo, that’s really interesting! Explains a lot. I’ll look into it…

Chris W.

Ignore your teeth -- they'll go away!

Cathi Andrews

I can't see that anyone has asked already, but what is involved in 6pm apps? I can't for the life of me think of what this might mean in a social context, only picturing you all sitting around various digital devices and sharing new, useful discoveries that make life better as opposed to the garbage ones that allow other people to make everyone else feel worse. I hope you can find the courage to deal with the vision issues, and that it is something you can correct with minimal intervention. Would it help to think of it as letting you see all the wonderful things better, and ignoring the actual body part that does the thing? Hugs either way.

dcorsetto

HAHAHAH I had to explain that to the invite recipients, too!! It's short for appetizers 😂 I'll definitely get the vision thing started! Very kindly, a doctor who follows me here on Patreon just sent a suggestion for something called benzo, which might knock me out enough to deal with the anxiety if I need to have anything more than a puff test done. I'll get it fixed! It's just a stressor. Thank you, Cathi!

Cathi Andrews

Appetisers seems such an obvious answer, now you've shared it too! :D
