Hello hello! I finally have all my Hourly Comics all done for this year!

I'm a bit late, but this isn't the Olympics, so there are no real rules. You just chronicle a day's worth of activity, in comic form, for every hour you're awake.

I decided to finish mine well after the actual date I was chronicling (February 1st) and so far no referees or judges have come to disqualify me.

Anyway, let the hourlies begin! (This is a free post, but if you're a Patreon member of mine, surely you recall what Ryan pissed on to start this whole thing.)

Surprise! The pipes in the add-on unheated hallway, full of windows and doors, that used to be the exterior of the house, burst again! The leaking water rolled under the washer all the way to the door of the girls' studio, before I could shut it off.

Obviously it's not great, but at least it's tile. Then again, tile isn't warm. The water began to freeze on the cold tile in minutes. But! Look at how pretty the ice was!

If you're a science nerd who knows why it froze into such intricate patterns (and can explain it to a kindergartener), I'd love to hear an explanation!

Alright, back to the house crisis.

A lesson I've had to teach myself over the course of many years: just relax and have some tea.

Gordon actually texts in full sentences, I'm just expressing awe at his emoji flourishes.

I managed to get the brunt of it off the tile, though!

Two of my New Year's Resolutions complete! (Clearing the desk, and starting a budget book. Claw clipping is a biweekly thing.)

I know how to make a jar of Bülow licorice last, lemme tell you.

Boum does some of my faaaavorite hourly comics! Here's a link to hers from this year, and here's a link to Lucy Knisley's, another big fave of mine! (They're here <-- Boum and here <-- Lucy on Patreon, too, if you wanna see more work from them!)

I can't wait to be stuck on the phone for an hour with them yaaaay. (I'm outing myself that it's been 11 days and I still have not called them.)

The end.

And, spoiler: Gordon fixed the pipes and it's above freezing so I can breathe again!

If you participated in Hourly Comics Day, feel free to share a link to yours below in the comments!

And if you're not a Patreon member yet, but you'd like to see my daily comics every week, it's literally $24/year to join the lowest tier (slightly cheaper if you pay for the whole year upfront) and you get to see allllll the comics I make. No pressure, but some of you love this autobio comics shit (and SO DO I), and you'd probably like what I make here!

Frozen pipes, oh no! But I love the sound effects of the shop vac scchlurping up the ice.

Brendan

While I am a certified Science Nerd (tm), my specialty has nothing to do with cool ways water can freeze. That being said, it looks like it froze as it was flowing, and as more water came along, it followed the existing shapes. That would explain both the curves and the layering. Just a guess, though! (and growing up in upstate NY where Weird Ice was a regular occurrence)

Boum

Danielle!! Omg! These are SO GOOD, and SO BEAUTIFULLY DRAWN, and I am SO HONOURED to be mentioned and I don't know why mine have anything enviable at all haha!! I love the watercolour look-- but they're digital, right, unlike your dailies? Masterfully drawn. That crowded bed. The joke about going to bed, wait the pipes wait the push-ups, I love it. I love everything.

allanfranta

Neighbor lost 2 hose bibs this year because they didn't know to let them drip. At least it was an easy repair job!

Tim Pendergast

Been lucky the monstrously cold winter and haven't had the pipes freeze YET *furiously knocking all available wood* I'm in the converted attic of a 120 year old house and somehow the freezing usually takes place below me, which is very annoying as I'll jack my heat up for nothing and with electric heat that runs me some $$$.

Crushbot (security*)

Danielle, PLEASE get your eye checked! Insurance sucks, but being blind in one eye is worse.

William Cole

Sorry for your Pipe Adventure! At you got some great Hourlies out of it.

dcorsetto

YES!! They're digital, which means I took waaaaay too long on them (how is that even a thing?! I guess because I had the freedom to go back and tweak too much!). Yours are fun and funny and clear and you made FOUR PANELS every time (I think?!) and you're selling yourself short, they're so wonderful!! So, thank you, because that means a lot coming from you! 🥰

dcorsetto

KNOCKING ALL THE WOOD FOR YOU!! (And SAME, all these pipes are in places I don't hagn out AT ALL, so the electric heat is just wasted on dumb poorly-placed pipes!!)

dcorsetto

I thought ND's were wonderful, too!! I've got yours in a tab ready to read tonight when I'm back!! <3

Hannah K

One of these days I'll scan things and add them behind a password protect space so AI can't scrape them. I miss Instagram not defaulting to using your art for their algorithms (if you're US-based at least). Siiiiiiiiiggh

Prettydragoon

Hooray for fully functional pipes!

Amy Crook

Hooray for fixed pipes! And it's really unfair to show me something I could send you as a surprise friends-sort-of gift when I've spent all my money on character art commissions. Hmph. I will forget by the time I have money again, so just know that in my heart I want to send you licorice to savor.

Katie McMahon

Oof, the pipes! I live in an old, old house as well, and the pipes are a constant worry. Huzzah for above-freezing temperatures at long last! With regards to Bulow's gourmet licorice, my partner surprised me with their advent calendar this past December!! I have no one in my immediate circle who would appreciate what a lovely gift that was, so I had to share with you ^_^

dcorsetto

Omg AMYYYYYYY 😭😭😭 Can you just trust me that the THOUGHT of that is enough of a gift?? You sweetheart! <3 (Yaaaaay character art commissions!!)

dcorsetto

Ooohh that's so sweet!! My pal Jess Fink (I hope you know her work, but if not, look her up!) is also a big fan of that stuff, as is NJGR (two people, but mostly the J part!) here on Patreon! You're in good company, and your partner clearly rules!

dcorsetto

omg these are great!! I'm RIGHT THERE WITH YOU on the splits - that is NOT my jam!! I really like the 9:30 am one. :) And yeah, it's TRADITION to let them sizzle out throughout the course of the day; that's why mine are just one panel near the end! (Also I do not have a kid, and this is my full-time thing; I'm always WAY impressed by parents who can swing HCD!! Congrats!)

Minzoku Bokumetsu

"WAIT SHIT" I know that feeling! JUST after going to bed, too!

Dean Reilly

I'm curious- if you were worried about the paintings, why not move them to higher ground?

Andy Ihnatko

This winter has been flat-out brutal. The temp was 37 degrees today -- second straight day of above-freezing weather in what seemed like weeks -- but I kept doing Seventeen Degree Weather things just out of habit. I had to remind myself that no, I don't need to work in bed today; it's not crazy-cold at my usual desk, next to the window. And, today I can just go ahead and put my pants without any intermediate steps; I don't need to put on long underwear first, followed by flannel pajama pants tucked into my socks...

Andy Ihnatko

Salted black licorice…the "I double-dog dare you" of the candy counter.

Josh Smift

The secretly-twelve part of my brain reminds me that when I was a teen, the phrase "a good set of pipes" referred to someone with a loud voice, aka big lungs, aka a big CHEST ... And so my secretly-twelve brain immediately concluded that "Hey Danielle how are your PIPES??" was going to be about your boobs. (I have this vague sense that teenagers today aren't as immature as my friends and I were. My personal kids don't seem to be! Who knows.)

dcorsetto

They're all VERY big, and there were a lot of them, and higher ground was... kinda far and several doors away. I honed in on the reality that if anything burst, it'd be water on the FLOOR, and the shower curtain would take care of any splashback toward the paintings. Didn't stop my imagination from going wild, though... !

dcorsetto

Ha ha ha THE SAAMMMMME. The only thing I swapped out were the fleece-lined leggings (for regular sweatpants).

dcorsetto

I LOVE the milder versions, but the REAL salty stuff is... a challenge!

dcorsetto

Ha! I don't think I'd ever heard of that one! Just to cover all the bases, my pipes are GREAT thank you. u_u

dcorsetto

Oh gosh!! Thank you, that was the FASTEST FOLLOW!! (Well, it would have been, except Substack does this "before you join Magreet's substack, look at these OTHER substacks! Want to recommend Margreet to friends? No? Skip? Okay fine." before it lets you get to that person's actual substack page. Yeesh!!) Thank you for sharing that here!

Margreet de Heer

Yeah, I love/hate that Substack does that (it IS good with getting me new subscribers, but do they have to be THAT pushy about it?) - thanks for sticking it out and WELCOME!!!

Dean Reilly

Oh, just middle-of-the-night paranoia. I know it well! 😁

Danielle Shuping

I saw the email about Danielle's pipes and d went "ohhh is Danielle talking about me?" and then remembered nah....Danielle's talking about Danielle in the 3rd person cause she's awesome :D also please come over and trim my cat's claws...I can't ever get her to hold still long enough!

John Monteith

I am in awe of your tenacity and strength, woman And you also make amazing comics? I must increase my game and my hustle
