Good afternoon, my dear Daily Comics consumers! I have a nice little collection of dailies for ya today. Let's start with one that shows my age (sort of).

Fennel's favorite place to step is the spot where my skull ends and the pillow begins, which is: my hair. Maybe I'll be making a comic about shopping for literal nightcaps soon.

Here's the original art, if you'd like it! As always, scroll down to get your Patreon coupon code for 50% off before you pull the trigger.

Last Saturday was the first super nice day this year! I spent 4 straight hours out in the yard.

I made it worse. 😏

It didn't work; her house is already under contract. Ah, well. (I'm being petty, and a hypocrite; I use AirBnB when I travel. Just needed to blow off some steam. I promise I'll be nice to the new neighbors.)

Here's the original art for this one, my fellow "if it's not supposed to be a PILE, then they shouldn't have called them 'compost PILEs'" friends!

Sunday was pretty nice, too, and some of my gal friends and I had planned a trip to Frederick. We hit HMart! Wonder Book + Video! Old Glory Antiques! Common Market! Back to HMart! It was the best!!

Actually, 75% of us were on the rag, but Amanda had it the worst. Good job, guy! (I did tell him to have a nice day, as a little treat for recognizing that prompting a woman to smile is filed under "creepy behavior.")

Whenever this topic is brought up, my Devil's Advocate wakes up, because I know there are people out there who will retort "He was only trying to be nice!" And I get it! So I wrote this comic:

Don't put cats in your lap and expect them not to claw you a little while they scramble to jump off.

Here's the original art for this one!

Last one, while we're still in Pip Mode...

He's... always right.

Here's the original art, if you please! Remember to use DAILYSMILE50 at checkout for any original comics art you buy! I've raised the daily comics prices to $75 for the general public, but that still means they're only $37.50 for y'all!

And since you made it this far, here's a bonus pic of Pip being a tiny baby kitten.

Back when he used to fit in the corner of the windowsill! You can tell by his enormo paws that he was gonna grow into the voluptuous beauty he is today.

If you're in Shepherdstown this weekend, my friends Jon and Amanda are hosting a literal tea party (and postcard-making party) at their new makers space, Make It, this weekend! Today through Sunday, anytime between 11 am and 7 pm.

I donated a bunch of delicious teas, so if nothing else, you're welcome to go taste test 'em. :)

The event is free (they're counting down the days for their business license be approved) and my friends are wonderful, so stop by if you feel inclined! 109 South Princess Street (street parking is free Sat+Sun!).

Whatever you get into this weekend, I hope you get some sunlight, assuming you want it! And if you don't, I hope you cave-dwellers have an excuse to not leave the dark comfort of your homes. 💛 / 🖤

Becky Fish

Did you remember to stir it well? I wish you better luck with composting this year! :)

Laura J Testa-Reyes

Guys being creepy is just such a thing. I love your reverse on it.

stevievanb

My son (human) is also like "STOP TALKING! TELL ME A STORY" when i get maudlin or philosophical during a snuggle.

dcorsetto

I've never stirred it! 😬 I just keep it wide enough that it doesn't cook - it just kinda... piles.

Becky Fish

It *needs* to cook to break everything down. It should be steaming on chilly mornings. :) ETA: Stirring allows everything to heat evenly without getting too hot. :)

dcorsetto

I should probably stop calling it a compost pile and call it... a pile. 😬😬😬

Becky Fish

Maybe get a barrel composter? It's basically a big metal barrel sitting horizontally on a stand. You load it up and turn a crank to spin it every couple days. Much easier and faster than a pile! (But still avoid putting meat in it.)

dcorsetto

I've seen 'em! And I've thought about it. Honestly, I think I'm just too lazy to keep a proper composter going. I know that sounds silly, but all I have the energy for is... a large pile where I throw my garden & kitchen scraps (no meat, I promise!).

Alenka Figa

Pip IS right but it is so hard to not think about. After losing one of my cats last year, I'm so paranoid about my other cat's mortality. She's about to be 14 and the tiniest of concerning behaviors threaten to make spiral! Cool and fun!

Katelyn Sweigart

I got a "6 years this day" photo memory of my cat Sweet Potato when we got her and refused to believe she is 6.5 now. She can't be.

Becky Fish

For aesthetic then, you can do what we eventually did and got a compost bin. Just an open bottomed enclosure with a lid and a slot in the side if you did end up stirring. :)

Douglas Appelt

I've never met Pip, but I love Comic Pip so much! Also, losing pets hurts so much. I got really attached to my friend's chocolate lab, and when he died a few years ago it was like a knife to the soul. :'( (And.... now I'm worried about my neighbor's adorable pure white pitbull, who I've known for about a decade now.)

Josh Smift

> Maybe I'll be making a comic about shopping for literal nightcaps soon. Huh! Is a nightcap in the alcoholic sense called that as a reference to the hat you wear to bed? I assumed it was more like "capping off the night" than like "helping you sleep, as if you were wearing a physical nightcap". But now I'm not so sure!

Amy Crook

Ahaha I recognize those Harney & Sons sampler teabags! We have so many and we have a standard set of like 3 of their teas we reorder constantly, whoops. I feel you on the cat thing, Pod is 17.5 now, and Lenin (who you drew) is no longer with us (sorry for the sad news). It's so hard to let them go when they've been a staple of your life for so long. Pip, my guy, you've gotta stay healthy forever!!!

dcorsetto

I wondered the same thing when I wrote that, and I'm not so sure, either!

dcorsetto

Oooh Lenin! I'm so sorry! <3 Yeah, Pip's gotta last us a good long while. No one compares!!

Becki Brothers

Honestly, if I could convince my job to let me work 100% from home, I would love to be part of your community. I hope the new neighbors are kind. You should look into bonnets! I use one and it helps with breakage.

dcorsetto

Aww. :) If the house had been on the market longer, today I would have been sharing the listing and imploring y'all to consider moving here! Or sending kind people our way, at least. I've heard great things about bonnets! I can't rock one myself, I'm too wee and knobby - anything poofy looks silly on me! I'll try to pull off a Scrooge look instead. ;)

NJGR

Aw, jeez, Danielle! Quit making me tear up over here. Our babies are gonna live furever. Ronan promised (as did Rosie, but she was obviously a good liar). 💙

Miranda Schubert

I feel you, on the wondering if things could be perimenopause...

Tim Pendergast

I can't figure out the obsession some men have with women smiling. Men certainly aren't obsessed with smiling themselves. Speaking of which, early on in Covid I couldn't figure out why my mask kept riding up until I realized that I was automatically smiling at everybody who looked at me, which was apparently something I learned to do in 30 years in retail. I also realized that most retail workers scowl until they make eye contact! 🤣

William Cole

Hmmm, there's a chance my son might wind up in North Carolina after he graduates this spring, and Shepherdstown *would* be closer than I am now… 🤔

Ash

I couldn't be a more threatening looking dude, but it only lasts until I open my mouth. It's no harder to put people at ease than it is to make them uneasy. If *I* can do it, anyone can.

Joanna

A friend bought herself a silk nightcap a couple of years ago now, and she absolutely swears by it. Silk in particular is supposed to be super good for your hair somehow

Minzoku Bokumetsu

WONDERBOOK REPRESENT!! (I'm p sure I've only been to that one twice, Gburg is much more local)

Minzoku Bokumetsu

also I have always regretted not being able to snatch up the nearby for-sale houses so our perpetually home-seeking friends can move in (particularly the red-staters)

Michael Jantze

You are so consistently profiles. Is it the magnesium supplements!?! Also. These are lovely!!

Michael Steamweed

Ahhh, yes, purrimenopause. That inevitable bane of cat ladies everywhere.

dcorsetto

Omg PURRimenopause was RIGHT THERE I can’t believe I didn’t take it!!

Dirk Bergstrom

Whenever I lay on my back in bed one of our cats walks across my junk. I keep a small stuffed animal handy for protection (and also as a between-the-knees pillow). The Pip-into-my-50s comic reminds me of the brutal scene in Mad Men where Peggy's mom tells her to get a cat: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qiSstxuaXRo

Keith Bass

Really feel that last one. My cat, the last survivor of 6 related cats in our family, is 20 and getting very creaky.

Michael Steamweed

Glad you like it! I hereby bequeath it upon you. Use it well! :D

Danielle Shuping

yeah that last one is hard yo! why are you making me think of my cat's age?? HMMMM??? she was very put out with me when I went into the hospital and didn't let go of my arm for three days...the claw marks still haven't healed. I don't want to think of my life without her.

Andy Ihnatko

I gotta extend some empathy for anyone who works a counter and is required to have dozens, sometimes even hundreds, of social micro-transactions every day. SO many opportunities to come across -- despite best of intentions -- like a complete [insert any of about 17 different nouns describing an unpalatable human here]. It was YEARS ago, and I'm STILL trying to recover from the time I got distracted by a counter worker's _gorgeous_ full-color Frida Kahlo sternum tattoo, became aware that I might have been looking at it for a conspicuously-long time, tried to cover it/apologize, and walked away from the counter with a scone, a beverage, and resignation to the fact that I probably shouldn't return to this coffeeshop for another two…no, three…weeks.

Andy Ihnatko

Jeez…and I remember when Pip was "introduced to the strip's cast" as Elle's unwanted, high-octane disruption to her steadfast stewardship of the household napping schedule. The Junior Staff Cats must look at those strips and ask Pip "Wow! It's so hard to believe that you used to be so _fun_ and _chill._ What happened?" (Pip opens a single eye, sighs, replies "YOU happened," returns to his nap.)

Farel Dal

great comics. if i am reading that correctly our birthdays are only two days apart, but the age is inverted. 54 years for me, fellow pisces

dcorsetto

We're still pretty far from NC, but closer is closer!

dcorsetto

And I've been to both up here, but haven't been to the Gaithersburg one!

dcorsetto

Ha! I don't take magnesium, but I do snort a whole teabag of earl grey every night! (I don't.) (And thank you!)

dcorsetto

Whoooa, no joke!! Are you the 21st? I'm the 23rd, which just barely ekes into Aries, though I've always been a bit timid about the amount of fire people presume I have when they find that out. I'm pleased to find so many 50-somethings who seem to be un-age-able; y'all give me hope for my next decade. :)

Minzoku Bokumetsu

would inform you they redesigned but then I guess you wouldn't know to tell haha

Farel Dal

whoops, thought i was reading yours was the 20th. mine’s actually on the 18th. so i guess that makes it 5 days (+ like 9 years or whatever). i have plenty of aches, memory loss, and regret of being in my 50s but for reasons unknown to me not as many wrinkles and gray hairs as i probably should.

dcorsetto

Ahahaha it's so true! Didn't Pip JUST get here?? He's in full Ellie mode now, especially with Quetza...

Chris W.

Interesting that you call it a compost pile. Out here on the Left Coast I've always heard it as "compost heap". Wonder if that's a regional difference?

Ursus Ridens

Well, I mean, a full-color Frida Kahlo sternum tattoo. The counter worker expected no one would look at it, ya think?

Ursus Ridens

Awful, awful pun. Thank you.

Ursus Ridens

45? Congratulations, and a very happy 46th year to you. That ain't decrepit. Do keep getting older. You have friends and much good occupation, and will probably enjoy getting older. I'm _much_ older than that, am kept alive with medicines and spare parts, and (largely because of my sweetie) am still glad to be here. Take a deep breath, everyone. Good, huh?

Naufragous Kat

I have almost caught up, Danielle! I’m in March now! Anyway, I wouldn’t be surprised if it had both meanings from the outset, presuming the actual head-clothing item predates the other sense of the word, which it must.
