We've been REALLY lucky with models over the last few years. I think Michael's just really good at weeding out the ones who won't take it seriously before he even gives them a chance; he's been leading these sessions for well over a decade now.

So we were blessed with this wonderful first-time model again tonight! Bonus: he's a DnD nerd. (He DMs, naturally.)

His five-minute warmup poses were all stellar!

He's getting into making little stories for the poses now. "I'm raking leaves, but I just heard something over there." (Like I said, he's a DM.)

He didn't bring an actual bow, but he did a great job acting like he had! So I drew it in.

I didn't notice that I flubbed the scan for the next sketches until just now, whoops!

But it doesn't really matter, because I took a lot of photos tonight! That cropped sketch on the right is on the left in this next photo, being used as reference for the final drawing (right, on a watercolor block).

One of the beautiful things about taking a phone photo is that it's mysteriously easy to notice when something's off. His shoulders and arms were too stiff. So:

I started with pinks!

Then teal and "harvest gold," I guess. Interesting combo, D. But I've got a pretty good track record of making it work by the end.

Also yeah I somehow got that tiny green smudge of paint above his head before I even started adding paint! Blast!!

I went with warmer colors as the night went on...

And, finally:

I was sorely tempted to photoshop out the smudge, but, eh, it's part of the painting now. No going back!

Some closeups, for your enjoyment! And mine, truthfully, because...

... I reeeeeally liked how his face came out. I kept trying to add his little mohawk-ponytail thing, but the shape of the back of his head looked so nice without it, so I abandoned it.

There were much darker shadows on the legs, but I reeeeally liked the shapes on the legs and right knee (on the left) this time around, so I took care not to drown them out with dark purple.

And a final shoutout to this foot:

I haven't said it in awhile: I really love hot pink gouache. (Not an affiliate link, just want you to know where to find it.)

We've been on a roll lately for Wednesday nights, so fingers crossed we'll have a model next week. See ya then!

Edit: Totally forgot to put this one up in the shop! It's $95 for regular people, half of that for you Art Night people, so if you want it, use ARTNERD50 at checkout for the 50% off discount! Thanks for helping me afford these sessions!! ♡

The knees came out great! And I love how kind his eyes look, you really captured what a nice dude he is. Also that teal in the shadows is great!

I'm glad that came across! He's a great addition to our crew. :)

If he crouches on top of the box it's an "eek! A rust monster" pose. (remind me to check my character sheets from 1980 for extra iron spikes)

The way you did the nose makes me want to see a photo of this guy's face.
