Gooood Daily Comics Day, friends!

On Saturday night, I was 60 miles away in the woodsy mountains near the Maryland/Pennsylvania border, working a caricature gig. On my way home, my "low oil pressure" light came on, but then it turned off, so I proceeded with caution. On the opposite side of the road, heading towards me, was a large, strange creature backlit by very bright lights, nearly blinding me. I was ready to believe it was some strange local cryptid, only to pass it and realize it was a horse attached to an Amish buggy with super bright headlights.

I was already picturing how to draw that for your first Daily Comic of this week, when the oil pressure light came on again...

Anybody else have a sudden flush of ideas when you're stuck waiting for a distinct amount of time? (FYI, in newer cars, you can keep an interior light on for a very long time without draining the battery.) (Also, thank god for AAA.)

I ended up trashing the ideas I wrote down on that folded scrap of paper, but at least I got one last mediocre script out of the way so I could move on!

Here's the original art if you can relate! Scroll down for your 50% off coupon, as always!

So I didn't plan on writing about cars for every comic, but "upend my whole week" was kind of an understatement, because...

Four years of extra work to avoid a conflict? Put me in, coach!

Here's the original art for my conflict-avoidant friends!

Okay I'm assuming 90% of you don't care about cars, so skip this next paragraph if that's you. I'll make it visually obvious when Car Talk is over, using emojis.

For my car nerds: here's what happened.

A local shop changed my oil about 2.5 months ago. I haven't driven much since, and didn't notice the deep puddle of oil that had been slowly leaking out of my car. I had my car towed to a (different!) shop about ten miles from my house; they called on Monday to tell me they found it 3 quarts low on oil, and the filter was super loose. They added oil but couldn't get the engine to turn over, so they tried to turn it manually with no luck. They concluded that the engine had seized.

I'm probably leaving out some crucial information here, so feel free to ask questions in the comments if you want more info!

Okay back to comics.

... comics about CARS, muhahahaha!! [seasonally-appropriate spooky Halloween laugh]

Funny enough, I made a comic about my face when I'm angry, and it was the OTHER time something happened to this car (third comic down on this page).

Here's the original art, for my fellow look-stupid-when-mad friends!

I asked my local shop - the culprit shop - to let me know the moment they picked up my car, so that I could be there to take notes as they inspected it.

It's a crime to post this comic without photo evidence, but he tucked his tongue back into his mouth before I could get a photo.

Here's the original art for this comic, my fellow cat-blep fans! Remember to use DAILYSMILE50 at checkout for your 50% off!

And now I must return to my new part-time job as Defender of Julie the Kia Niro, a job I did not ask for and do not qualify for, so that I can make some headway on new Elephant Town pages! I'd hoped to launch this Monday, but you know what? That's not likely. And now you know why! So let's have a proper launch when this car business is out of the way. I'm sorry for the stupid wait, I hate it as much a I hate my face when I'm mad.

May all of you... just... not have car troubles this weekend. That's my weekend wish for you. No car troubles!! Even if you don't have a car, I hope you don't have to hear or see a car all weekend long. I hope at least one of you is going somewhere blissful where the number of cars is zero.

I do hope you see one blep. May you see a blep! Blep you all and have a blepped weekend!

Oooooooooooh that gets my hackles up, yeah auto shop you done messed up a really foundational, 101-level part of an OIL CHANGE and you’re absolutely, zero-doubt on the hook for this 😐

S

yeeesh. A nightmare, for sure! Best of luck πŸ«‚

Boum

Ughhh that sucks!! I CRY when I'm angry so I feel ya. Crying at the auto repair would suck too. That last Pip comic is the best! Hang in there, we'll be patient!

Becky Fish

Let your lawyer buddy take charge, or they'll find a new way to screw you.

Chris Wichtendahl

Uhhhggghhh. Happened to me once too, but it was totally my fault because I'm an idiot, so I had to buy a new car (which ended up being my favorite car I ever owned so it worked out). Hope your car drama is over!

dcorsetto

Oh nooooo!! (But oh yessss favorite carrrrr!)

dcorsetto

Oh god yeah, I mean, I guess it would help your case but crying at the repair shop would not be fun for YOU! Bless Pip, he's got me.

Pocket Vinyl (band) & The Touring Test (comic)

Been there! Almost exactly there! Hope the shop and all that caves and it all works out financially because damn that's rough. At the very least, let me remind you life goes on, and you'll figure it out. I feel like I always think something like "if this bad things happens, my entire life is ruined" and sometimes it does, and life isn't ruined, and time continues, and things get figured out one way or another. Not sure if that's comforting at all, but it is to me! Soooooo.....*forced smile*

Hilary R.

I'm so sorry - take care of you!

Meisterj

Oh no, I'm so sorry you've been going through that. Car problems are so expensive. I hope the culprit shop does the right thing

Lars Gottlieb

We wish you a merry blep-filled weekend and best of luck getting Julie the help she needs

William Cole

Ugh, sorry Danielle. I wish we lived in a less car-centric society, because they suck so bad.

David Poole

I felt so much secondary social anxiety from this. Sorry you're going through these problems!

dcorsetto

My most repeated thought this past week has been "cars are so stupid cars are SO STUPIDDD!"

Katelyn Sweigart

No not the Niro! I have one too and it was my first new car. My other one was a Kia Sedona that I ran into the ground, 250k+ miles.

Caroline

Ironically, I'm doing a neighborhood Art Walk this weekend which is a spread out enough neighborhood that... it kinda requires a car if you wanna hit all the houses in one afternoon

Andy Ihnatko

Ugh, I'm so sorry you have to go through this. Good for you for doing all those things you hate doing!

allanfranta

In RE: "you can keep an interior light on for a very long time without draining the battery" In 2023, I flew to my 50th high school reunion (Go Scouts!) and somehow managed to leave an interior light on as the CRV sat in a long term lot for a week. The battery was so weak that the key fob didn't work, you could hear it trying though! Airport parking has a courtesy vehicle which came by when I figured out how to contact them (Drama of my own device) and gave me a jump. I figured the battery was done for, but it is still going over a year past warranty expiry. Highly recommend Costco batteries.

Monica Gallagher

OMG what a nightmare!! I hate that you have to deal with this shit, but so glad your support network is in full force! And I'm VERY proud of your confrontation!! You got this!

dcorsetto

I did one of those screechy long inhale-gasps reading this!! Aww buddyyyy I'm glad it worked out in the end! Sometimes a little drama goes a long way!

dcorsetto

You KNOW I've been missing my got dang SCION right now!! (I know it wouldn't have mattered which car it was, but at least the Scion doesn't have a BILLION safety features *without* having a single feature that lets you know when you're 3/4 low on oil!!) THANKS HONEYYYY

David Neale-Lorello

1. Good job you for standing up for yourself! 2. That sucks SO MUCH, but good job standing up for yourself! 3. I hope this gets resolved quickly and smoothly and good job standing up for yourself! I grew up in a car family. My grandfather owned an Esso station (they became Exxon, for you young'uns) and my father and uncles grew up wrenching for him. My dad built a GT40 replica (that's a race car) when I was a kid and I helped him maintain our family cars, including pulling engines and transmissions. I rebuilt the engine on my 1974 VW Thing and made more repairs to my girlfriend's '76 Rabbit than either of us cared to admit. I don't do any of that anymore. You have to enjoy it and I don't. But it is scary trusting your primary mode of transportation -- and/or a beloved object -- to someone else. I agree with everyone else: that was a bone-headed mistake that the garage should make right. I also enthusiastically endorse the suggestion to let your attorney handle it. It might cost you a little more in the long run, but what it will save for your mental health is worth it!

Amy Crook

Bleps are magic. Cars are....less magic. Good luck getting the shop that did the bad thing to own up and do the good thing!

dcorsetto

Hahaha aww David, you know just what to say! I had no idea Esso was the pre-Exxon! I always had a weirdly warm feeling toward the lettering of that original "Esso." How freaking cool that you rebuilt your gf's car!! Funny enough, my high school boyfriend drove one of those (maybe a bit newer... but maybe not? He was COOL). I don't have an actual lawyer picked out - my pal's a real estate lawyer - but I'm still waiting to hear what the owner's going to say. If I'm honest, I've been avoiding my phone for the last hour because I don't want to know if they've called. But I know I've gotta rip the bandaid off sometime...

Douglas Appelt

New comic idea just dropped! "The Adventures of Danielle Corsetto" now featuring Amish Cryptids! [Kicks Mothman out the door. "We'll call you if we need you!"] Bee Tee Dubs, *everyone* needs a Pip in their life!

Allison Matthas

They did WHAT to poor Julie?!!?! 😨

Ben Hatke

Oh Danielle! Car stuff is so miserable! I really, really know that horrible math about "if I do one $50 art for X years..."

Lisa Engle

Here is a recent blep for those who need one.

David Neale-Lorello

I KNOW how hard it can be to stand up for yourself sometimes! I expect I'll always struggle with it, even as I've gotten better at it. Exxon's branding is actually really interesting. "Esso" is a phoneticization of "S.O." or "Standard Oil," which is one of the company's progenitors. There also was "Enco" and "Standard" and a dinosaur and a buncha others that I don't remember. They were one of the first companies to rebrand themselves, consolidating all those brands together in the early 70s, I think; I remember when grandpa got the new sign. It's worth Googling if you're interested. Of course, that's not to suggest that Exxon is any less evil than it is, but I naturally have a warm spot in my heart for the Esso logo, rest my sweet grandfather's soul.

TL;DR: ugh cars! Long time reader, first time commenter. I read this today, on the day of selling my car to an online junker for a surprising $1100, considering the salvage yard was offering $400. A few years ago I had one of my axles replaced, and this may have caused a leak into the transaxle, killing my transmission. I would have thought about talking to the shop that did the axle replacement, but for better or for worse, my car got me all the way an hour and a half away from home to my friend's house in New Hampshire before fully dying last week. So having a Boston shop come look at it wasn't exactly going to happen. Quite grateful to the shop up in NH for not pressuring me to do six thousand dollars of work on my car (the transmission plus the rusted undercarriage that would have to be replaced to get to it) and for hanging onto it for a week before I could get back up there with the title. And grateful to my friend for driving me back up today to deal with it. Sorry yours is having such a time! Congrats on talking to the shop about it! I hope the logistics don't swamp you too badly!

Mandy Wright

I don't have a car, so I can guarantee you that I will not be having car troubles this week! You're welcome!

ellafine

Oh no, transaxles. On my beloved 88 Chevy nova, I had a β€œfriend of a friend” (note to self: never again) replace the axle or part of something related to it…it’s been a long time since this happened…anyway, he installed it really badly (might be related to the fact that he literally hotboxed in my car while driving it back from his home garage to where I was meeting him) and it was left way worse than it was when we started. Which I learned after having it towed to a local reputable shop. I didn’t have a lot of recourse with the dude, since it had been informal and under the table - he wasn’t working for a shop. (Never, ever again..) Edit to clarify I had to replace the transaxle after what was supposed to be a simple part replacement for the axle iirc)

Minzoku Bokumetsu

how I had to replace my battery, somehow I managed to leave the interior light on before parking for the WEEKEND (Spouse drives on weekends and since we have 1 assigned space, I generally don't even see my car all weekend), so come Monday it was DEAD x_x so now I have the light set to NOT turn on (and just struggle at night), so when it comes on, I know I touched it on accident

Chris Driggers

One of the things I loved about the Nissan Leaf I used to own was: zero oil changes. I had it 6 years and only ever changed the tires and brakes once and the air conditioner filter. I love cars but wouldn’t think twice about ditching mine if I could live somewhere with legit public transportation. Atlanta ain’t it.

Krysten Devro

I had a shop do kind of the reverse mess-up: they forgot to put the oil cap back on. I found out when the oil light came on and I opened the hood to find I had 2 quarts of oil sprayed all over my engine compartment. This is definitely their fault, and it's what shops have insurance for. They owe you an engine, no doubt.

Monica Gallagher

Yeah I miss the cars that were VERY simple to understand and fix!

dcorsetto

I literally NEVER THOUGHT about electric cars not needing oil changes!! Incredible. And yeah, same, I love driving but I'd be just as happy to borrow a friend's car any time I need to make a quick trip, and rent a car when I need it for a signing tour or a long trip!

dcorsetto

Ah man I'm sorry about YOUR car! But hooray for the online person willing to throw you extra dough for it! And thank you!

dcorsetto

We've all done this artmath game at some point!! I'm sure I'll do it again for some part I'll need to have replace on my own body one day! πŸ˜…

dcorsetto

EXACTLY!! You know I'll be featuring our Drama Kid Julie in a comic once I get her back...

dcorsetto

Hah!! Thanks for writing the kickoff premise for me!

dcorsetto

Ooohh I love this kind of stuff! Even when it's not something I'm interested in (gas stations), it's something I'm interested in (branding, language, etc.) Thanks for this little backstory David!

dcorsetto

Hahaha I have definitely played this "struggle now, but never regret later" game!

Allison Matthas

Hoping for a painless recovery for Julie and your wallet. πŸ™

Isa

Blep proof is also hard here... It's tongue inside or look at my butt instead here. I might even have the phone in my hand but cats feel we want to have a blep souvenir... I'm seeing cars this weekend but I'm hoping for zero car trouble and at least a blep 🀍 I hope the culprit shop fix the car at zero cost to you. Because it certainly doesn't cost them all that to fix it 🀞

Worst Journey Graphic Novel

Ughhh this sort of THING! When they talk about the downsides of adulthood it's all knees and taxes and not 'Surprise! This totally random thing is now sucking up all your time, attention and money! Too bad about the job, ha ha!'

Margreet de Heer

Aw man. And blep blep hooray for our pets who continue to show us what's really important in life.

Luke Steichen

I can empathize! One time I had my oil changed by the dealership I bought the car from, and they FORGOT TO PUT THE OIL CAP BACK ON! Thankfully I caught it relatively early, but my engine, engine bay, and driveway ended up covered in oil. Also, I hate that blame game that always ends up happening with expensive car repairs. Hugs and empathy!!!
