You have no kitchen but you DO have this cool pair of hot plates. In addition to the hot plates, you have a hot date. That's great!

What impressive, delicious dinner do you cook for your hot date on these hot plates, that she thinks is real great?

(Other items you possess: pots, pans, a sink, knives, legendary cooking skills, charm.)

The very thing I cooked for my very first date with the lady who would eventually become my wife: Chicken Cacciatore. Big frying pan with chopped up chicken and veggies and spices, 100% fresh real ingredients (no bottled sauce, puh-lease!) and a big boiling pot for the noodles. Not shown: a bottle of fine wine to go with it. Dessert in the fridge: a store-bought cheesecake, fresh strawberries, jar of gourmet chocolate sauce, whipped cream. And yes, I -did- posess those other items, thank you. ;-)

Also weird idea but there’s this guy on YouTube that travels a lot and is vegan so he cooks a lot of his meals in weird ways- like making ramen in a coffee pot And cooking tofu with a clothes iron- he’s called the vegan macgyver and he kind of makes it seem like you can cook anything anywhere ... not sure where I was going with this but it might make it easier for a character with bare minimum appliances to make something fancy if they’re the kind of person who would do anything to make the perfect meal?

Two pan dish that impresses every single time is Spaghetti Carbonara. Boil some spaghetti in one pot, crisp up some chopped bacon pieces in a pan on the other burner, take the bacon pan off the heat and toss the pasta into the bacon, with a bit of pasta water, a TON of pecorino romano cheese and a couple egg yolks, and a lot of freshly ground pepper. The heat from the pasta turns the egg yolks, grated romano, and pepper into this luscious sauce, and the crispy bacon lardonnes add a salty, textural element. It's perfect for any meal, and Italians are known to eat it for breakfast as well. Of course, Italians use guanciale (cured pork cheek) instead of bacon, but it's near impossible to get good guanciale here in the USA.

Risotto is THE classic one pot fancy date meal. I cooked the person who became my wife one with pancetta (cubes) and thinly sliced savoy cabbage (plus a ton of cheese), and the pink bacon and dark green cabbage together looked amazing and tasted better. If said hot date is non carnivorous, it's hard to go wrong with pea and asparagus tip (but really, I hope they're not vegan cos cheese, y'know?). And in the other pan gently fry some green apple slices in butter, add lots of sugar and a slug of brandy, caramelise that mofo and tip it over the very best vanilla ice cream you can get :)

Thai green curry stir fry on one burner, tom yum soup on the other. Both dishes are all about prep & fresh ingredients with very little actual cooking time, and they make your house smell like a lemongrass and coconut garden! Also very flexible and easy to adjust ingredients for vegetarians / vegans / lactards. Most Americans seem very impressed when someone cooks Thai food at home, but I guess that will depend on the ethnicity & origins of the characters involved!

Yes, I was thinking a stir fry as well. Precooked chicken, so you don't have to worry about the raw with the veggies.

Paella, hands down. It's just possible on two burners, not terribly complicated but LOOKS tricky to make. Lots of steps and ingredients, so you and your date get to spend time in the kitchen together and s/he helps by chopping onions and chorizo. Then the dinner itself involves a pitcher of sangria and refilling little plates from the common pan, as opposed to an entree that's plated into two big separate dishes.

Spinach ravioli. The stuffing can be made in bowls, the pasta can be rolled out by hand and stuffed by hand. One pot to boil them in and one to make your sauce (mmmm alfredo) in.

Grilled cheese and tomato soup would win my heart sooner than anything fancy!

I've got a recipe for Alfredo that's so rich it might possibly give you heart disease just being in the same room with it, involves literal pounds of butter, whole cream, and cheese. Give me a couple cans of chunked chicken to throw in, put pasta in the other pot.

When I took my parents camping in the mountains a few weeks ago I made us all personal pizzas on my coleman camp stove. You let the dough rise in a bowl beforehand (or a pot if you're me), roll out, put in oil on a skillet, cook dough on one side, flip over, sprinkle cheese on so it melts, ladle on sauce and your various toppings. Yum! Pad thai is another thing I make on the camping stove a lot.

It must be fate to have this hot date but I’d hate for you to be late finding something to sate your hunger so don’t wait and go straight for some cheese to grate and don’t abate because you have a date on your slate and you want to show that your cooking is a good trait in a mate so don’t debate and start to create but try not to fixate on the state of the plate or at least that is what I’d advocate.

Oh that is EXCELLENT, I love it!

dcorsetto

Oohh this is a recurring meal my housemate makes for us and it is SO GOOD. Good call, I may use that! Thanks!

dcorsetto

Ooh that's a good point, sharing from the same pan. :) (Also now I'm hungry AND I want sangria!)

dcorsetto

Oooh smart to put the cheese right on the hot dough! Ahh that sounds amazing, you must be a great campin' host. :)

Sorry I just wanted to collaborate, I didn't mean to make you exacerbate. Did I miscalculate?

I've got it far worse: now I'm hungry _and_ there are five restaurants and a coffeeshop within a ten-minute walk. I can be disciplined about impulsive eating and compulsive spending but when the two of them team up...

Hmm. My wife says of her favorite things I make, it's either the filet with Dijon cream sauce or ribs. The filet really should have more side dishes than 2 burners can handle, so it's ribs (I've actually made this on a 2-burner hotel suite stove.). Take baby back ribs with a goodly amount of meat on them and have the butcher saw them into lengthwise strips: each rack should be cut into 3 strips. Slice them into individual little rib pieces. Heat peanut oil in a wok until good and hot, and brown the ribs, a handful at a time. (Add some ribs, chow them until browned then removed them, let the oil heat back up for a few seconds, then add another handful, etc. Once they're all browned, dump them back in, add enough soy sauce to make up about a third of the height of the ribs, put a good scoop of sugar (or two, depending on how much soy, it's something you just kinda have to guess at,) and bring it to a good boil. Boil it until the soy and sugar start to caramelize and thicken, turning the ribs frequently with the chuan. On the other burner steam some broccoli that's been cut into florets. You can serve with rice (two burners means you'd have to make it earlier) or a sliced crusty baguette works well, too. Any extra sauce is good on the broccoli, or for bread dipping. (Leftovers, if any, reheat well, and I just gnaw on them cold...)

I do enjoy complex dishes, but if it was being cooked for me, I'd be turned off by someone cooking something fancy just to show off their skills. For the love of the meal and the flavours though, would be a different matter. I guess it depends what the characters' preferences are, however good quality foods prepared simply, but with a twist, can be even more impressive. Some steamed beans and broccolini in a vinaigrette with slivered almond and hemp seeds is a great side and there are so many easy variations. Served alongside the perfectly cooked protein of choice, leaves plenty of room to enjoy a dessert afterwards.
