Hey, Sneak Peek patrons! Here are some turnarounds I worked on while I was in Denmark for Miranda, Nicole, Kris, and Paul (Berto, Meighan, and Bryan are still a wip).

I've spent a lot of time tweaking and simplifying, and experimenting with character-specific color schemes without being too over-the-top (Miranda and Nicole's color is gold; Kris's color is a reddish purple; Paul's is computer screen blue; Berto will be some kind of green). Nudging the hue of the dark linework toward each character's color did the trick!

I've also been tinkering with styles a lot. I love the idea of simplifying my linework more, but some of the personality gets lost when I pare down the lines. Take Kris's initial simplified design, versus to the more "typical Danielle style" I landed on:

Not that everything about the first ones were bad, just... not really me. And definitely not Kris.

At some point I even thought I might get rid of the linework entirely. I applied this to Miranda and Nicole's designs...

...but ultimately there's just so much more story in those first drawings, even the imperfect black-and-white sketches. It was a fun experiment, though!

On the topic of simplifications, I redrew the first Miranda strip I made a few weeks ago to simplify and clarify it a bit, and landed on a pretty happy medium that I'll refer back to when I start drawing the finished pages:

And I actually drew two versions of Pauls' turnarounds. I wasn't gonna show you, but, fuck it, I just won't tell you why. ;)

Thanks for letting me share these with you guys! It makes all the work feel a lot more justified, and I love letting you in on what I'm doing to prepare for the book.

And now if you'll excuse me, I need to see the town librarian about an elephant. That'll make more sense in a year or two. ;)

Let me know what you think about these in the comments, if you have any thoughts! Even critical thoughts, those are always welcome!

Everyone in this comic is so grumpy except Nicole! XD I'm so excited.

I would never have noticed the colour changes in the linework if you hadn't mentioned them, but I can see how they make the characters more individual, and whole? even. I agree with you on the linework. I enjoy seeing your simplifications vs detail in the life drawing posts, but here the detail does seem more "you". While I'm prepared for the wait, I'm still pretty keen to see this once you're ready.

Aaahhahaha I didn't even notice that! Good ol Nicole!

I totally love seeing your process of creation!!

It's worrrrr-kinnng! Gotta admit that I'm intrigued by the look of the art without the linework. At the same time, your linework has SO much energy and I'd miss it. I'm a little surprised to see Miranda in shorty-shorts. She seems like the sort of personality who subconsciously dresses to match her environment, as a form of protective camouflage. I don't know much about Nicole but I can already look at her turnaround and think "That's SO Nicole!" All of this stuff looks terrific and gets me more and more excited about Project X!

I struggled with Miranda in those short shorts! But she's very interested in fashion, and she's so concerned with how her outfits will look aesthetically that it doesn't even register that something she's wearing could be considered "sexy." If the scene makes it into the book, this is something we'll get a little glimpse of later. :)

Oh, and samesies on the lineless style - I'm glad I know I could swing it if I ever had a story that the style worked for! Having the time to play has been SO NICE!!

Andy Ihnatko

I can totally see one of your "one big panel, no need for words" strips in lineless style.

I love the color styles and your tweaking of characters soooo much! Also would totally love a line-free comic at some point - your designs are so strong they can werk that too!

Aww girl, thank you!! I was thinking of you today; I tried out a little brush & ink. Holy shit I don't know what I'm doing!! I'm gonna want to bend your ear in a couple of weeks (YEEEEEE!!) about how you do this so well!!

Monica Gallagher

Brush & ink party for sure! I always forget you DON'T already use them, that's how good your linework is. This is why we always need some technical Art Knowledge Swapping Time whenever we get together - I have so many questions and learn so much just from us sharing. :) And YESSSS GHOST O'CLOCK IS ALMOST UPON US
