So I do this How To Draw Comics workshop with teenage Girl Scouts every winter at their annual Chill Out retreat in Gettysburg, where the girls are allowed to pick 4 elective classes to do (mostly indoors) on a cold Saturday in February. It's a retreat my troopmates and I loved when we were kids, so I try to make the workshop one that I would have enjoyed way back in the 90s. :)

The old ones were... well, speaking of the 90s...

They weren't BAD - I even traced some of the mouths for the new one - but they deserved an update! And the addition of some tricks & tips.

Usually I just print out a few of these and make the girls share, but every year most of the girls beg "can we keep these??" So this time I'm printing enough for everyone, and letting them each take them home.

This will be the first year I'm doing a two-part session; the girls will warm up with some facial expressions sheets and create two characters in the first hour-long session. During the second session, they'll apply those characters to a comic strip.

I'm looking forward to seeing what they come up with. No doubt, a lot of manga, and some anxiety-driven romance stories.

...damn, now I wish my parents had signed me up for Girl Scouts when I was a kid.

If any of the girl scout comics are good, can you get permission to show us them?

I enjoyed seeing all of these, but for the life of me, I could not imagine the central mouth in the first row as part of a face. Any chance you could slip that into a character in your next daily drawings?

I was thinking about it, but I think I'd feel a little weird about putting a minor on the spot like that! I'll feel it out.

Would you be OK with me printing these out and showing them to my daughter? The local brownie troop won't let her join (long story), but she really enjoys drawing and I'd love to give her some girl-scout-inspired experiences!

Oh that sucks, I hope it was just dumb bureaucracy and not anything personal! But YES, as long as it's not distributed on a large scale, shared publicly, or sold, you're welcome to print anything I post here. :)

Deb with the purple bike

Thanks so much! I promise they'll stay on her desk. (And yes, it's bureaucracy -- they want the troop to be an even number of girls, so until another girl wants to join, my kid is literally the odd one out.)

Her stuff is nice and dark! That Instagram minifilm - Not sure what I was watching. But dang, it was good! Left me wanting more as well as an explanation! Thanks for asking about links to your girl scouts! This chica has the power, seriously!

WHAT?? Ugh that is SO DUMB, in my experience there's always one girl absent anyway! I'm sorry, I hope they change their mind sometime!
