After kicking around a list of at least 30 title ideas, Elephant Town finally stuck. :)

While elephanttown.com is owned by a domain squatter asking for $2k*, my wise friend Rich nudged me that www.elephant.town was available, so that'll be its home eventually!

*I just checked, apparently elephanttown.com is a page full of Microsoft links now? Bluuhhhh!

I want to promote the project in April (and start sharing pages with you guys in May, before they're public), so I think I'll try one of those takes-up-a-whole-row Instagram things, like this:

Ideally, each of the square posts would be lightly animated, because I can't seem to quit this animation habit, so why not?! Here's a very rough idea of how subtle the movements would be:

... proving that redrawing each panel (rather than just copy-pasting moving parts like I did here) really pays off!

This story is going to be... long, and slow. The first four chapters are already 80-90 pages. But I want this story to take its time, and breathe.

I sketched up a possible update schedule, and decided the best way to share the pages is to update scene by scene, so you don't finish reading an update mid-conversation! Scenes would be between 2-5 pages, and might update once a week, twice, or three times in a week, depending on what feels right. Either way, I'd be drawing 5 pages every week.

(Routines scare me.)

It makes for a heavy workload - a page a day - but my incentive is that I think you'll enjoy reading it more the faster I get them out. According to this schedule, you wouldn't even be meeting Miranda until August, and I don't want to stretch it out longer than that!

I'm curious how y'all feel about not having a set "update day" for Elephant Town? I feel like most people just use email notifications to find out when serial stories update these days. What do you think? Let me know!

PS, even though this is a "Sneak Peek" post, I'm including $3 patrons, because asking you to "help me write the book" has been such a bust this year!! The answers you sent for those few "story polls" I ran in 2019 made it into the first few chapters of the book (and made it more fun for me), so thank you for contributing things like... like albondigas, a word I didn't know before. ;) Anyway, I thought I'd let you in on the Sneak Peek level this time, since it's been otherwise pretty quiet for your tier!

I know I'm oblivious to schedules and need notifications of some kind

dcorsetto

yesssss this is what I like to hear

Monica Gallagher

Eeee I'm so excited and kudos to you for the intense sched!! You got this! (and I'm so glad you haven't kicked that animation habit!) <3

dcorsetto

ANIMATION I CAN'T QUIT YOUUUU (thanksss!!)

Julie Howard

I need notifications because I work night nurse shifts and my brain gets gooey at times. I am so excited about this! I think a strength of yours is your story writing and character development. When you say you have 80 to 90 pages already for the first four chapters, that makes me so happy! I kinda want to go rob you and see all of what you have written right now, but hey, I’m going to be patient!

Sheri Spangenberg

I think i wasn't expecting to see it online, I thought we just had to wait until it was published! But yes, I like update notifications. About half the comics I follow have a "get the post a day early" as part of their patreon. Now I forget to check the other comics I follow who don't do this. I'm so used to just getting them in my inbox, instead of having to actually remember to check. So I think i'd like either patreon nudges, or be able to follow a facebook page/instagram that lets me know when an update is available.

Bradford

I don't mind an inconsistent update schedule. I'm sure Patreon will let me know when there are new pages.

Tiffany Pincombe

Yay! This is so exciting, and no set schedule works for me as well.

S

Update whenever makes sense for you. Don't want you to burn out! I'll still follow my standard check-every-day-for-new-content-and-bookmark-last-read method of reading web-comics :D

Christina

I like set update days. I get way too many emails to add notifications for everything I like to read to that. If there's not set update days, it doesn't bother me, because I'll just check in from time to time and catch up.

Andy Ihnatko

"Update Day" creates good reading habits. Without them, even a strip I love can fall off my radar. And "Elephant Town" is the title of something I would definitely check out...even if I had never heard of the creator before!

dcorsetto

I think I'm *always* going to have updates on Mondays... but there would be some Wednesday updates, and some Wednesday + Friday updates, and at other times, if a scene is 5 strips long, JUST a Monday update would do for the week. For those of you who like a routine and might only remember to check on Mondays, what can I do to help you catch up with the updates in between?

dcorsetto

That's what I was thinking/hoping! I think Mondays will always be update days, but you can catch up on the middle ones then. I just asked Andy this and I'll ask you, too; if you know that Mondays are always worth checking in on, what can I do to help you catch up with the updates in between?

Douglas Appelt

I guess I'm an outlier: I just bookmark comics I like and then use Firefox's "open all in tabs" every day, so I actually visit 100+ websites once a day whether they update or not. (I'm also a PC-only user; never mobile)

dcorsetto

Oh bless you, bless you and the ad revenue you bring in for everyone on your list!!

Douglas Appelt

Heh. My comic sites are the ONLY websites I have AdblockPlus & Ghostery turned off for. :D

Paul W.

I use rss and read whenever. I have enough schedules from work without ones from my entertainment. ;-)

One of my favorite comics (Something Positive) updates (and I quote) "When I feel like it. I try to post one every day, but that doesn't happen." Seems to work fine for Randy. I personally have my favorite webcomics bookmarked and derive joy in randomly clicking on them to see if there are updates, but I'm also slightly OCD.

Andy Ihnatko

The UI of the strip's site can give me all the cues I need. Whether I need to come back in two days, or I need to go back a bit to pick up the strips I missed. The only problem that's hard for me to solve as a reader is a totally irregular posting schedule. Even if I only know that new stuff is posted at least once a week, I'll settle into some sort of weekly routine for hitting a site.

Betsy

I like knowing update days, but TBH I'll usually wind up checking nearly every day even if I ought to have learned by now that a particular webcomic doesn't update that frequently. If you plan to usually update on Mondays but sometimes also on Wednesdays and Fridays, then maybe it would help catch people up if you had a little prompt that indicated that there were other updates in the past week. Even something as simple as numbering the pages would be helpful, or a caption or note on Mondays that mentioned whether the comic had updated on Wednesday or Friday.

NJGR

Timing doesn't matter to me. I prefer to either get notifications through an app (Webtoons Patreon, etc.) or via my RSS feeds. I catch up on both during the weekends (and read specific ones that I love every time they update). -j

Christina

If it's easy to tell how many updates happened in the previous week when visiting, that would do it for me.

dcorsetto

Julie you always know just what to say to make my night! <3 Thank you.

dcorsetto

Haha oh good, my new devotion to "underpromise, overdeliver" is working!! ;) It's funny, with all the push notifications we have available on our devices (idk about you, but I have all but texts + calendar set to OFF), Patreon reps have told me that most patrons access their posts via email notifications. That works well for me! Oh and I'd like to offer the book on Instagram eventually, as well, so you might be getting that option later in the year. :)

dcorsetto

Cool, I will try try try to remember to do that! I'm debating how to link things below the post updates, 'cause I'd like to make it easy for y'all to find the previous pages (there's a lot of easter egging & calling back to previous chapters in this one).

dcorsetto

I love that you quoted Randy; I don't think I'd read that before. :) Thanks!!

dcorsetto

I'm hoping that getting into a routine of updates every Monday will make it easy for me to remember to link back to the previous updates! Either way, the hashtag #elephanttown and the post names (which will definitely be numbered) will be consistent. As always, my filenames are the most accessible, sensible, and organized thing in my life. ;)

Erik Greenfrost

It's from the FAQ page. I knew that you were buddies so I figured you'd like that. Not to disqualify what other folks have said in their comments, but I think you can also give yourself permission to do whatever works best for you and we will be fine. :-)

Mary

I do this, too! Open all in tabs, read through the ones that have updated, repeat daily. XD

Sheri Spangenberg

haha yes, I hate push notifications for stuff for anything that isn't a calendar or a reminder of a thing I have to do. I basically ONLY check patreon through email telling me there's a new post. But i do like getting the emails, because otherwise I have to remember to check it and i'd probably forget for weeks or months at a time.

Amy ☣

I follow a mix of comics that do it both ways. I just keep all the ones I don't have an update notification of some sort in one bookmark folder and load them all (about) once a day after 9pm (because pacific time) and read which ones that have updated. But then I also follow others via twitter and patreon, and I like that because it gives me a chance to read right when they're posted if I'm not otherwise busy. I feel like I'm less likely to miss an update from patreon notifications, so that's my ideal solution if I enjoy the comic enough to want to support the artist monetarily.

Ralph

I’m happy with updates when I get them in he mail. That’s when I read An Embarrassment oF Witches. I don’t even know if there is a fixed schedule for that comic.

Nancy K

I use an RSS for webcomics so I'll catch updates whenever they're made. I do like getting whole scenes at once!
