Hey, I never got around to posting these last week!

Last Wednesday I guest taught my first class for CCS up in Vermont (virtually, of course). I had a jam-packed lesson planned, briefly covering a bunch of small-but-powerful tips that I wish I'd known ten years ago. (If this intrigues you, be sure to read the end of this post!!)

We started off with 30-second and 1-minute warmups as always:

Then I did a little lesson on hands & feet, and talked students through how I draw the head at odd angles. Then I had our model do some closeup head-at-odd-angles poses for us:

After that I talked about placing the feet so that they inform the viewer of the ground (without drawing the ground), and then we talked about forced perspective. Our model was kind enough to place his webcam on the ground for some good forced perspective shots:

While he was posing for these, he also had a second camera above him so that students could see the difference between the effect of a wide-angle closeup (forced perspective with lots of dimension) versus a farther-away shot (more like a flattening telephoto effect).

I forgot all about the from-above camera until the literal last minute! You can see me attempting to quickly capture the above pose in the large bottom-left drawing here, before we finished with 1-minute cool-downs:

SO HEY. I had a great time teaching the CCS students and I'd really like to share these lessons with you guys.  The heads-at-odd-angles one is an especially solid skill to learn for those of you who want to step up your art game.

I taught these classes live by screen-sharing my iPad so that I could show the students my drawing process (way easier than still slides/text!). If I live-taught these lessons on Zoom, would you be interested? I could just share the Zoom link here with you top-tier patrons, and you can either watch me teach live (in which case you can also ask questions!), or just watch the recording later. Classes will probably be 20-30minutes, nothing intense.

I'd really love to get more practice doing these lessons live online, and I could use your feedback afterwards!

What do you think? Gimme your brain-thoughts below and I'll start scheming!

I'd love it! I always liked the patreon classes you had here, would be even better to have it live/recorded!

Very interested! These are skills I'm really looking to level up on/gain.

Sarah Swett

Yes indeed! What a fascinating and useful thing that would be.

Andy Ihnatko

Sure sounds like a neat idea!

Amy Crook

Yes! Schedule permitting, it sounds amazing.

I would be very excited for an online zoom class!

Ooh, I would be very interested in that! It sounds really fun!

I'm late to the party, but I'd at least watch. I might try my hand at it, but I already know I'm terrible at art.
