I've only got one page to share this Monday, but it's been taking me aallllll weeeeeek to draw.

(I've also been packing & shipping the last GWS book orders, and finishing my taxes, but MOSTLY I've been groaning over... drawing gutters. )

I finally had to draw out the entire Elephant Town house. This day had to come eventually.

I already knew that I'd have to fake the third floor - the IRL house's third floor is way too big (three bedrooms!) to belong to JUST Miranda:

... so I shortened it, but it doesn't structurally make sense from the front:

But y'know what?  Movie magic. It doesn't need to be perfect. No one's gonna plot out the house and email me about how wrong I am. (Except that one guy, but what is he doing with his life srsly.) Only you, fair patrons, will be let in on my dirty secrets.

Btw, if that shot on the bottom right looks familiar, it's because we saw it in Berto's first chapter:

And, yes, I drew it twice. I take a lot of pride in not copy-pasting backgrounds so that the original artwork has all the details, but it does take longer!

Anyway, thank you, I just wanted to show SOMEONE how much dumb work I'm putting into this, because I'm already a little embarrassed that I only have one page for Monday! (I chopped the original three-page ending last-minute, and decided to put it in the next Paul chapter. It'll be a lot more fun to share it in a few months instead of now!)

Okay, I feel really dumb right now: it didn't click with me that all the characters live in the same building! Now that I know that, though, things make much more sense! I think part of the issue is the page-per-week format messes with my sense of continuity. I have the same challenge with other weekly stories and periodically go back and re-read from the beginning (or at least the last several chapters). I'm really looking forward to the website going up to make that easier! Also, what LJT-R said above!

I gasped when I read this, because I felt like I just gave away a spoiler!! But, yes, you're completely right; when this is in book form, it'll click a lot sooner. I feel like the Patreon reading experience is more like... giving you guys a sneak peek at the book that'll come out in, like, 2026? and making sure I keep on a regular deadline for the pages. And YEAH, the website will make this a lot more enjoyable to read, too, before the book comes out! But flipping back & forth with paper pages will be *chef's kiss* the optimal way to read this sucker. :) Thanks for sharing your perspective, it's helpful!

I also definitely never realized everyone lived in the same house until now, haha. The BIGGEST kudos to you for drawing the backgrounds in every panel, I will never be that strong.

Jessica Bernard

You're not alone! This was an a-ha moment for me too!

Siobhan

My mind, like so many other people's, is definitely blown about all being the same house. But it makes SO MUCH SENSE now.

Jamie Noguchi

BUILDINGS!!!!!! Love all the details even though they get faded back when colored, but love this process!

Are you going to publish Elephant Town as a book? Even with all the hassle with printing and posting, I feel this story will be very nice in a book.

Jeanne Muir

Let's face it, that house has some architectural oddities even if you drew it like it is IRL.

Jeanne Muir

Also, the studio apartment on the first floor has somehow been stretched to the other side of the house to now be a one bedroom. Idk how that worked, really, even though I watched them do it.

dcorsetto

It is 100% intended to be a book! In fact, I always call this project "the book," and my boyfriend is always like "uh isn't it a webcomic" and I'm always like NO, I'm sharing it on the web BEFORE it reaches its final and perfect form, a BOOK."

dcorsetto

!!! Whaaat!! Well THAT'S news. I can't comprehend why they'd bother, since it had to have eaten into the OTHER first floor apartment, and it wasn't exactly big! Is the newly-stretched one the one for rent right now?

Jeanne Muir

Yes, I don’t know what they’ve bumped the rent to. It’s been mostly empty for more than a year as a studio.

Jeanne Muir

somehow they added a room that’s next to the door to the walk up on the other side of the building? They haven’t taken room from the first floor apartment on this side. Although I rely on your drawings for layout, I only know the cabin and the ones on this side.

dcorsetto

That is INSANE. This house as much sense in real life as it does in my hacked drawings!

Meisterj

You do so much work, it is impressive.

Tim Pendergast

Hope you're not out of GWS hardcovers! Just went to order it and discovered it's been sitting my cart for who knows how long. I'm just a terrible person.

Boum

These are so impressive, Danielle!!

A.J. Golash

Always so impressed with your craftsmanship (I really wanted to say craftpersonship, but then I just think of knitting pirates) especially in that it’s combined with such excellent storytelling!

dcorsetto

I just saw your order! You're not terrible, I pay no attention to what people have in their "carts." ;) I'll get back to you soon!

Tim Pendergast

Wasn't sure. On some sites keeping things in your cart prevents others from buying them.

Cat

I did not realize it was "Creamy Neil," not "Creepy Neil." Somehow that just kicks the inherent creepiness up by 17 notches.

Cab

Woaaah!

dcorsetto

Hah! Ask me next time we hang out, I'll give you the full (short) story behind the name. It' surprisingly PG.

dcorsetto

Oh right! Yeah, no worries; I relist these books often, they're not running out anytime soon. :)
