So, today's Elephant Town page was supposed to look like this digital mockup on the left (I know, it's practically finished, but I treated it like a proof and used the lines as "pencils" for my hand-drawn inks):

I used a premade brush to lay down some "weeds" in the mockup, just to get a feel for the placement.

But when it came time to ink weeds all over the original art, I got cold feet. I wanted the weeds to feel like Shepherdstown weeds (I wanted them to be native plants, insert nerd-emoji here), and also I couldn't decide on an overall shape for the weeds to fill, because the weeds in the mockup felt a little distracting.

So I spent an hour last night looking up native weeds and drawing them. And then got up this morning and kept drawing them. And now I wanna toss all my future plans out the window and just paint native weeds.

But, well, this was meant to be practice for adding weeds to today's page, so I made these into silhouettes and dropped them into the file...

And they worked just fine as-is! So I'm gonna make a little less work for myself, and just let this be the final page.

Here's the original page (forgive me, it's a crappy screen cap) next to the newly weedy one, for reference:

If it wasn't so damn cold and unpleasant out, I'd be outside picking dead plants to study right now! Maybe Wednesday, when things warm up a little...

Love the added depth! And the added connotations, as well!!

Here in the 'burbs of Baltimore, I am sharing your frustration with winter's redux! And loving your native plants!

Looks great! Your sketches made me think of the glass flowers they have at Harvard.

dcorsetto

Had to look those up! Hooooly shit they are AMAZING

Tim Pendergast

I saw them on a field trip in HS and they have stuck with me all these years.

You had my attention at weeds, but you made my master gardener’s heart sing, when you decided to feature natives… However, as those who proudly wear nerd emojis are welcome here, I feel compelled to call out that while many types of asters & goldenrod are native to the US, curly dock and wild carrot are not. Though both are now naturalized (commonly found) across the US, they are not indigenous to North America and are even recognized as invasive in some areas. So, while all of those plants may be local to Shepherdstown, not all of them are technically native.

dcorsetto

Oh interesting! How long does a plant have to be naturalized before it's considered native, do you know? (Also, what makes someone a master gardener?! IS THERE A DEGREE)

Amy Crook

I love the real weeds, and all those little details you put in like that to make it so much more real of a locale. It's so much better than the original because they look like specific plants and not just suggestions of plants.

Sky

Naturalized to native is a huge debate. Master gardeners are courses, usually offered through agricultural university extensions, with the expectation that graduates then help people learn how to start gardening.

William Cole

This! I was thinking something similar last night but couldn't come up with any words. (Also, it's always cool to see process stuff and hear about the thinking that goes into these smaller details.)

dcorsetto

Ah how cool, thank you! I fuckin love extension programs. I wish they weren't called "extension programs" - I heard that term for so long without having a clue what it meant. It doesn't sound like AWESOME CONTINUED LEARNING THAT IS (most of the time?) FREE TO THE PUBLIC, which is what I would have named it. u_u

ayshela

All of both of these comments, which is the stuff I usually can't find the words for.

In Indiana, Purdue runs the EMG program & it was just $175 (a steal!) for 13 weeks of classes & a 600 page textbook. We commit to continued education (monthly) and volunteer work in the community to maintain membership. My brother is a park naturalist & would never call a naturalized plant native, but as Sky noted, opinions differ widely on this, as well as on how locally “native” is defined (some as broadly as by hemisphere/continent, others down to the city/zip code).

ayshela

What does the commitment to continued education consist of? That's definitely a steal of a deal!! I agree with your brother, honestly. Just because something was brought to the area a long time ago, that doesn't make it FROM the area. It's either originally from the area or it's not, you know? That's why there's a different word for it.

I love the lines! So beautiful.

The initial commitment here in Indiana is 40 hours of training (the 13wk course counts!) & 40 hours of volunteering in your 1st two years. Thereafter, I believe the minimum ask is 12hrs of each per year. With lots of opportunities to learn more, educate others, and volunteer, many of us log lots more.

You spoil us. I feel so rotten.

This is one of my faves of your Patreon posts - because Incel Weeds that could double as tattoos! I will line up to hear about any and all plant studies that make it into ET :)
