I keep forgetting to share these sketches with you guys!

My sketchbook has been pretty sparse due to covid (I only use it when I go out), so these span back a few months.

This one's probably from a show at the Ottobar - Luke and I have seen a few of our favorites there over this year. (Some so-so sketches of Greet Death are cropped out below, but they're my new favorite band so here's a link!)

Below are a few sketches from the big open house thrown by the new owners of The Mill in town (literally, the house with the mill attached).

The big-haired young guy was cheerfully playing drums at the Dev down the street on a night when I didn't realize it was Open Mic night.

A riveting conversation at the Dev.

A really nice tree in the backyard of the Meck. I forced myself to draw it, because trees take time and I'm not great at drawing them, but I was there to RELAX, and if I had time to relax then I had plenty of time to draw a tree.

We got to see Dan Deacon! It was super fun! He's a bit of a local celebrity, and this was also at the Ottobar, so it was like going to watch a home-team game. :)

This girl had the most AMAZING mushroom-print one-piece that I couldn't stop staring at.

Just like the other tree sketch, this one was drawn because I was on vacation and told myself YES, you CAN sit and just draw, and not worry about finishing it if it takes too long (trees take long!!).

My dad and I both have that overwork gene that makes it hard for us to relax, but here we were, on vacation, both of us sitting in the sunlight on the back patio of our rented house in Carmel, and forcing ourselves to RELAX. I think he may have even been taking a nap! Good job, Dad.

We were there in July, which is when three of our family members were born, so I'd tucked away three blank cards, my Prang watercolor set, and the Caran D'Ache water brush I got in Copenhagen, so that I could make last-minute cards for the Birthday Bunch.

I had to wait til everyone had gone in to take naps after wine tasting in the desert heat (ROUGH DAY) and snuck out onto the back deck (we'd moved on to a different rental in Paso Robles to meet up with our extended family).

That first one is of my now-bearded brother Brent - GWS fans may remember him from various family photos I shared throughout the years. Next I drew my cousin Lisa...

... who had a concussion in February and hadn't been drinking much since then! She took a sip here and there with us, but mostly played it safe.

Her dad, my Uncle Greg, was the DD of the group, and even swapped cars at one point (long story) to accommodate his tipsy family!

Here's a photo of the whole lot of us at Adelaida, my favorite vineyard on the tour:

(I made Brent's beard a lot fluffier than it really is!)

Thanks for being patient with me last month while our family got together for what was supposed to be a 2020 reunion! I missed them and I'm so happy I got to spend real vacation time with them. :)

Completely unrelated: You must look at this cat.

Her name is Licorice and she lives a block away and I've only seen her twice, through the window, like a LIVING NIGHTMARE and it turns out she has a whole Instagram account if you wanna follow it. Long live Licorice!!

With my European knowledge the tree looks more like a rowan, chestnut leaves look more marijuana-y (in lack of better descriptors).

sjlxndr

There are some rowans in the US but I don't think they're very common. To my eye that looks like it could be pecan, walnut, ash, or butternut.

sjlxndr

Oh or maybe hickory.

Sarah

Their patterns are the most fun! Highly recommend!

Joachim Weiß

The tree could be some kind of robinia.

M Aidan

Mountain ash if there were little orange or yellow berries!

Keith Bass

Tree could be a black walnut if there are (slightly larger than) golf ball sized green fruits on it.

Tyler D

*chants* Long live Licorice!!!!

Your family looks so. . .normal.

dcorsetto

Hahaha yeah, it is WEIRD! (Luckily they're all super nice and kinda just love & accept everyone. Which, from what I've heard of other families, is also weird.)

Ruth Merriam

That photo is very much a "one of these things is not like the others" moment. It's perfect.

dcorsetto

Hahaha excellent!! If only my hair had stayed MERMAID GREEN for this shot!
