Luke's yearly birthday tradition is my favorite tradition and it's not even MY birthday!

Here's the doofy cake I made him! It DID NOT look like the cake I sketched out in Procreate!

But he loved it!

His card was also Tears of the Kingdom themed, although I believe the mashup (see Luke's shirt above) is a one-of-a-kind combo:

("Scaring the hoes" sounds way more offensive than it is!)

(My grandfathers were both very handsome men, I'm just a little miffed that I got the genes to look like both of them as I age!)

My friend Pang is taking up tintype and she invited me over to sit for one!! Boy oh boy was the first one humbling!!

I'm still cackling at how dark the face is!! This was Pang's first day doing tintypes on her own, so I was one of her test subjects - she's still figuring out the exposures! She took a second one in different light:

We were both impressed that my tattoos showed up so well! They usually fade off. Really wish I could've brought Pip for a truly accurate portrayal of me, but it IS a 7-to-12-second exposure, so... I think he'd get too wiggly.

I booked a meeting with my doc to start up a bunch of medical stuff after I finished Drive, knowing I'd have enough money to pay for them all (do any of my fellow self-employed people do this?)...

I did the PT thing immediately because I knew I'd lose the referral if I waited. I'm treating myself to preventative exercises to keep my wrists from breaking off before I'm 50!

How do people remember all the stuff their doctors tell them?? Does EVERYONE write copious notes like I do?? It felt like a part-time job this week to arrange every different thing! (And I still haven't heard from the gastroenterologist. >:T )

Luke brought me more clay. Guys I'm obsessed, I can't stop, it's getting ridiculous.

I've barely touched social media the last several weeks and my life has not been worse for it. Aside from sleeping in today and nursing a touch of a hangover...

At any rate, hanging out with people IRL is a lot better for my soul than scrolling through a lot of hate and anger. I'm sorry to those of you I used to connect with regularly online, though; I miss all the nice interactions we had. I wish we could all just zap ourselves to the Meck for an evening instead. <3

my docs print off an end-of-appt summary with everything i need, which i then skim if i remember XD also i have expanded medicaid bc i don't make nearly as much good good art money as you, and it's the best insurance ever? i have anxiety about starting to make too much to qualify tbh, which is ridiculous. XD also i feel you about the socials... i retreated to fandomland and tumblr, where we embrace being feral raccoons showing each other our favorite garbage. XD i have a bluesky but i don't know why to say on it! and i've kinda faded out of insta because FB is so terrible...late-stage capitalism enshittification sucks, danielle.

Do you have a password manager? I use Bitwarden; it's a lifesaver for stuff like mychart and PT logins and stuff that you use in spurts. Also my PT office emailed a PDF (or sent it through yet another health care website?) with my at home program exercises for reference which was awesome, but then it didn't get updated so I did have to keep new stuff in my head... but I'm sure you can bug them to update it!

Re: Luke Are you sure that's him? Dude has his shirt on. Re: TinTypes Don't watch any Ken Burns documentaries while admiring your cool tintypes. You might get sucked through a time vortex into the Civil War.

You definitely have to stay on top of the gastroenterologist! I think all of them are just always busy. I had to switch mine earlier this year and setting up with the new one took several gentle reminder calls from me, even though when I finally had my appointment they seemed totally on top of things. *shrug*

Re: Medicaid, I've HEARD!! Apparently I'm in this sweet (shitty) spot of income where health insurance is kind of disproportionately more expensive (for less coverage) than it should be. I read an article about it a couple years back and it doesn't seem like anything's changed since. Hope you get to keep Medicaid!!

dcorsetto

It turns out my MyChart login was already kept by whatever Google is using to remember passwords, luckily! And also luckily, the PT place is two blocks from my house and a friend of mine works there, so I'll be able to reach them easily. :) Thank you for the recommendation!

dcorsetto

Ahaha good point, that might NOT be Luke!

dcorsetto

I checked the ratings for this gastro when I got home, and they're all SUPER low. The biggest complaint is that it's impossible to get an appointment with them, go figure!

I was in the Old West portion of an amusement park and they had a dress up and take a picture store with old west clothes to use. I was a bit startled to find the girl running the place did not know what a tintype was. Never seen a drawn/printed added extension to cake art. If you made that up, super bonus points.

dcorsetto

Oh I'm not surprised at all! I used to work at an amusement park and we were all just kids who were medium-good at what we did. No photo degree required for a photography gig there! As for the cake, that was me leaning on my illustration skills and knowing my limits (as shown on the cake) with an icing bag! I have a LONG way to go and knew I couldn't make a convincing Link outta icing. ;)

My housemates are also in that spot, sigh. Don't worry (?) I'm nowhere near that kind of income yet ahahaha haha ha. The pandemic & recession have really killed me.

dcorsetto

Right? I didn't want to write "hope you stay in that income bracket!" either!!

I gave up trying to remember what my doctor said once I joined his practice's online tracker, which is good as my memory has always been crap. Best of all I can download my appointments right into my calendar, which is truly fantastic as I am notorious for transposing numbers.

Andy Ihnatko

Ha! Got an unintended laugh from your drawing of the Twitter bar sign. I initially misread the new "𝕏" logo as the universal "⛝" warning sign that a city puts on the front of a building when it's been declared to be unsafe to enter.

Andy Ihnatko

I have _always_ divided expenses/purchases into "must be done by, or on, X date" and "can be put off." Being a freelancer is like being part of that generation of people who grew up during the Depression. The eyeglasses I wear for distance vision (like when I'm in a theater) are old and scratched up. I got an updated lens prescription in January. I can literally walk across the street from my house and have new lenses made. I can definitely afford them. And yet, every time I consider it: "I mean, if I just tilt my chin up a little bit, I can look through the part of the lenses without any scratches on them and it's totally fine..."

ughhhhhhh I'm supposed to get a mammo, too, but the first (and last) one I did, I passed out from the pain :p REALLY not looking forward to that again

And as a public service I mention this fundamental rule of computer use: Do not, repeat not piss off the sysadmin.

Beta blocker? You take care of yourself, ya hear?

If you're curious about genetics related to breast cancer, check out the WISDOM Study (for women over 40 right now, soon to expand to over 30, that provides free genetic testing for known markers/mutations). I discovered that I am a carrier for one gene, so I get mammograms yearly and breast MRIs also year (basically, a breast test every six months). I don't have any family history, so that was a surprise, but I'm also not particularly worried about it. Also, I keep thinking that you should just start a Discord that's connected to Patreon for Patrons. At least it's one place you can control a little bit!

M Aidan

Aw i wish i could be zapped to the Meck! Ofc i would spend the whole time distracted, looking for GWS refs 😆 and then you'd all laugh at me when i fall asleep after a half pint 😂

M Aidan

And YES i take copious dr notes! Between therapy, physio, my kid's orthodontist, and my middle age, the "Med/Rx" pages of my bullet journal get a lot of use!

dcorsetto

Oh wow, that's really interesting, thank you!! Discord has been recommended to me in the past; personally I cringe at going in there because there are like 6 groups I've been invited to and a billion notifications that I can't keep up with! But do you think patrons here would like that, even if I only showed up once or twice a month?

dcorsetto

I should have elaborated: it's a quick fix for calming my nerves during public speaking! :)

dcorsetto

Oh noooo that's awful to hear!! I was expecting pain and pressure (I'm a sensitive little baby), but my experience was surprisingly GREAT?! And completely pain-free. I wonder if you could find a lab in-network that has great reviews? Going to mine felt like going to a spa!

NJGR

I think it'd be fine if you only popped in a couple of times a month, but you'd definitely want some moderators to keep an eye on it when aren't around. Maybe you could team up with a couple of other artists that'd be willing to give it a go via Patreon or just ask a few patrons that you trust.

Minzoku Bokumetsu

I have the feeling it's not the care so much as the... mass? Like, squeezing that amount is bound to be painful no matter who does it, idk

Ruth Merriam

I love Discord! You can share media, unlike here.

PT and your wrists - I immediately thought about an exercise a chiropractor taught me some 30 years ago when I was still working as a dental technician. If there were just some way for me to send you a short video clip I'd film myself doing it. It's easy and painless and you can do it for 30 seconds a night while you sit and watch TV.

dcorsetto

30 seconds!! :) With any luck I'll learn that one and more at PT. Maybe I'll do a lil comic about it and you can let me know if yours isn't one of them. :)

Deven

I'm glad my doctors started having notes from the visits available online after so I can check those when I forget stuff. Despite getting a mammo AND a breast MRI every year (before 40 boob cancer survivor) I always forget to schedule both. I need reminders slapping me in the face. Doctors appointments are just so easy to forget to schedule. Speaking of, I'm supposed to follow up on a knee injury...whoops! XD

I did not know what to expect with those tin types. Both your grandfather's faces at once" 😂. Sometimes when a weird bad picture of me gets taken I imagine it being the only one that survives after my death and it somehow makes it funnier. Like, "That my great grandma Jackie. I hear she... had a fun personality." Also, I definitely plan expenses around big projects. Not so much for health things because luckily I'm on Pat's plan, but I lovvve buying little vacations for my future-soon-to-be-more-broke self. All camping trips are booked like 6 months in advance. Hope all the medical things go well! It's soooo much to navigate 🙄

dcorsetto

AHAHA I think about that too, all the worst photos of me being the ones they inevitably decide use in my obituary! I've wanted to write a comic about viewings, too: when we saw my Grandpa Corsetto at his funeral, I'd read Caitlin Doughty's "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" book about the funeral industry, so I knew a little about how morticians prepare a body for a viewing: they have to clamp the jaw shut and glue the lips closed. Well, we Corsettos have huge teeth and tiny little lips; unless we purse them close, we can't cover our teeth at all. Gramps looked uncomfortably tight-lipped and unnatural! So I'm thinking we should skip the viewing when I die, lest I look like I'm holding in a big fart for eternity.

Underpants and Overbites

hahaha I too am from a big-teeth-not-enough-lips family. My grandma did not look quite right in her open casket either. I'm hoping to be incinerated (or abandoned at sea) because it still weirds me out a little to think about my grandma chillin underground a few miles away. I feel like if she was nowhere, she could be everywhere. But really, she's a few hundred feet off Lake Ave...
