Since we didn't get together for figure drawing this week, I decided to treat myself to Jared Cullum's guest teaching for Babs New's online figure drawing Sunday night.

Jared's an amazing watercolor + gouache artist and when I saw he was teaching tonight, I knew popping in would give me at least one useful tidbit I didn't know before. We warmed up with 2-minute poses, during which I was still getting situated, so not all of them were completed:

And bumped up to 5-minute poses:

Then we moved on to a 20-minute pose, but not before getting a brief lesson in COLOR TEMPERATURE within the figure from Jared. He explained that the center of the body, with its mass and all the organs deep inside it, tends to look COOLER, while the extremities and the top part of the face tend to look WARMER.

I considered that maybe my issue with yellow lately has been that I've placed too much of it in the center of the body, and perhaps I should try to make the center of the body cooler. I applied this to the first 20-minute pose:

More pinks and purples and blues in the center, greens in the closer extremities, warm colors in the lower extremities and where the bone is close to the skin.

To my delight, Lucy Bellwood was in the class too, and brought attention to the fact that Jared was even using reds and warm colors in the SHADOWS of the extremities. I tried to do the same, at least under the chin. I think it worked nicely!

Another 20-minute:

I strayed a bit. Final 30-minute pose:

And none of the shadows were overdone! Which tells me that maybe the hour-and-a-half-long poses we do on Wednesdays are too long for me.

We'll see how many of these lessons are remembered when I'm back on my regular horse. ;)

I think you overlooked a tag: #foreshortening! 😀

I love the knees on the 2nd one, but the colors on the 1st & 3rd were so great, you got such different moods despite similar lounging poses.
