I've been reading Julia Wertz's Impossible People, which of course is just totally excellent, and she's so honest in it, it's contagious. So I'm venting a bit this week. I'm even letting you in on some hot Farmers Market gossip (don't tell my honey guys I have nicknames for them).

These first two are pretty saccharine, though; my parents came to visit for a night and I love them a lot.

I mostly fought with my dad when I was a teen, and barely talked to him in college, and I think that's why we get along so well now. If you have a bratty teen, may you also be blessed with a better relationship in their adulthood.

Locals, don't snitch on me.

Ryan and I BOTH missed out on appreciating that sweet sweet free hour of sleep on Sunday morning, because we were too busy thinking it was supposed to happen on Monday morning. At least I just felt groggy and confused all day; Ryan went to work an hour early by mistake!

This is one of those things you're not supposed to talk about, I guess, but I'm going to talk about it anyway:

If you bought a GWS book from anywhere other than me in the last 5 years, I haven't received anything for it. Well, now that my publisher is finally dealing with the unexplained error, I guess I'm about to receive a lot of cents for it. Just in time for my car, mattress, and laptop to politely request retirement! Like Amanda said, I suppose: GIMME.

On to more fun topics...

I feel like an idiot. But, the public needs cats doing yoga.

The reason I don't make political cartoons is that I don't usually understand what's going on. Like I have a Typical Citizen's grasp of it, but I don't feel like I can comment without really researching the topic; political cartoons can have an insane amount of power over the masses.

I've stopped feeling bad about it; it's not my forte and I wouldn't be any good at commenting on it. What I'm good at is sharing experiences from people in situations & subcultures you might not understand, in a way that you might understand better.

Coincidentally, the person on the other side of the phone was my friend Josie, who's the first friend I ever had to transition long after I became friends with them. She desperately wants me to write comics about the trans experience, and I desperately want to make a whole book interviewing her. Let me be good at what I'm good at, and make some small difference in the world that way.

And on that note, here are some silly yoga cats I made the other day (they'll be available this weekend at the Over The Mountain Studio Tour!):

Here's what happened last night while i was cleaning for the aforementioned Studio Tour:

The PAINS I WENT TO to find whatever dead thing was stinking up the air, you'd think I'd never experienced a cat taking a dump in a litter box before.

Well, anyway, no dead animals for the studio tour! I'm going to finish packing things to sell tomorrow. If you're thinking about going on the tour, you can read more about it here at our website, or you can peruse the other artists' work via the Instagram account I've been uploading our photos to all week!

Hope to see some of y'all out here this weekend!

When I re-read GWS, I go get my luxury edition, put it in front of the 'puter to enjoy, then put it back still leaving the shrink-wrap foil on, and open the website to actually read... So those cents will reach you now? Sweet.

Amy Crook

I'm so glad you're getting a paycheck when you need it! 💜 And that you figured out why you needed to blame the cats for the Smell, lol.

Tim Pendergast

Parents that come to visit you and don't demand that you always come to them? I have no idea what that feels like!

allanfranta

Freakin' capitalism... Enjoy the fruits (the money I thought went to you) of your labor! Febreeze works for short term odor control, I spray it in the garbage can. It also confuses the daylights out of ants, which makes sense.

Tim Pendergast

Yay, accounting error in your favor! (BTW there should be a single word for that!) I try to order as much as I can through my local comic store to support local small businesses, my former employer, and my friends who work there, not to mention getting my still active employee discount. But when I went to order GWS last year it was out of stock from Diamond, so I ordered it from you and I'm so glad now. Very happy you got your money from me immediately. Enjoy your belated windfall!

Around here, everybody knows at least three people who sell honey, eggs, or firewood. Having a friend over who sees the eggs in your fridge and knows that none of their own hens lay eggs with those colors is tantamount to if your partner removes a load of laundry that you put in the drier and discovers a wholly unfamiliar set of underwear. (Actually, my current drama is bumping into the neighbors who run the cafe across the street. Because the answer to the question "We haven't seen you at the place in a while" is "OK you started making your own donuts and they aren't half as good as the donuts you used to bring in from the fancy bakery the next town over just don't hate me ok")

Andy Ihnatko

Ollie wouldn't do that. Not the day before. You won't see his stockpile of heads and butts and viscera until he sets up his little merch table on the day of the event.

dcorsetto

I inhaled LOUDLY at the thought of your chicken-having friend seeing SOMEONE ELSE'S EGGS in your fridge!! I'm lucky that none of my friends run eateries in town, because I too would have to cover my mouth if they wondered why I wasn't eating their (slightly inferior) food anymore... I don't envy you!

dcorsetto

Yeah I figure he's holding out til it COUNTS. (Or Fennel will - she's the one who drags his trophies INTO the house. Or, half of them... )

Jamie Noguchi

Damn, sorry about the teaching gig! That always sounded so amazing!!!!

Andy Ihnatko

"I MADE A BIG QUICHE OVER THE WEEKEND AND I RAN OUT I WAS DESPERATE I HAD NEEDS..."

Andy Ihnatko

Just don't let them undercut the prices on the dead varmints you assembled for your OWN merch table...that's just not right...

David Neale-Lorello

I totally appreciate your point about political art. There are so many important, valid, and compelling issues to care about and address, that it can be difficult or impossible to attend properly to even a few of them. Humans are not built to care about things beyond their immediate perception, yet we have developed technology that inundates us with information that, were it happening directly to us, would be catastrophic. The solution isn't not to care, but to care about what one can. There are enough of us that, when we do what we can do, a difference can be made. Your work makes a difference to the communities with whom you share it. I'm so glad you see that and can stand on that. ❤️❤️❤️

I really like reading your daily comics. It's a nice view into the life of a creative person.

Arend

I’m a little ahead of you time zone wise (in a country without daylight savings time) so i read this after just waking up. Perfect! Also, loved the bit about your parents. Very relatable.

Ash

I wish I could just *be* and not have stupid opinions about everything. Not healthy.

Paul W.

Well, glad I bought books from you then. Enjoy the well earned and long delayed pay.

Cat

I feel this, my guy. See also where I attended The Halloween Party as the ghost of Rachel Corrie (wearing a kaffiyeh) because I can't ever just be chill 😞 bless our girl, tho, because without good people like her there wouldn't be any safe places for our social justice warrior brains to take a break. (Danielle: our only-lightly-informed but still "woke" Den Mama).

Cat

There probably *is* a single word for it. In German.

Tim Pendergast

No doubt it is 47 letters long and was formed by welding 6 or 7 other words together.

Dean Reilly

How does a publisher make a math error for FIVE YEARS? I would have thought that some level of competence with figures was a prerequisite for running a business.

dcorsetto

That is the highest compliment coming from you, gal. I might write a comic about how I can't let myself go off the deep end thinking about The Hard Things because my body literally can't handle it. I'm just a lil flake of skin, really!

Tim Pendergast

That way you know it's meant to be shouted, like most German!

NJGR

I'm happy to hear about the publishing company... Seemed hinky that your weren't getting $ from Iron Circus over these years. I also understand that feeling about the politics and art thing. No one artist/writer/etc needs to have a voice about everything and it's not possible for a creative to be able to create something effective about everything topic or issue under the sun. But FWIW, there are political elements in Elephant Town and GWS, you're just looking at them from the lens of your characters, and you do that very, very well. - - Neal

NJGR

Okay, I'm glad they fixed the error (especially because knowing you weren't getting your cut was deeply troubling to me), but how the heck does it take FIVE YEARS? (Jess)

NJGR

Dangit, it sent. I also love your note about your dad, and it rings so true to me in my own parental relationships. 💙

Luis Alonso Herrero Scotto

Yay 5 year money to Danielle :D! It's funny that you despicted something similar in GWS when Hazel didn't realize she was getting paid for a whole year cuz she moved with her mom and didn't know her mom put all her mail into a box for her, where all her then-expired paychecks were.

Boum

Omg I'm so relieved you're getting money from GWS.

Theadora

There is something very ... calming? about your Dailies. Thank you.

dcorsetto

(Apparently old-school emoticons show up blank? Pretend there's a little heart up there!)

Theadora

That's funny! The e-mail notifying me of it had the "less-than three" emoticon!

E

I really really hope the GWS kickstarter big book money went to you before this. That is awful. Glad they finally got back to you.

dcorsetto

It did!! And it was a lot. I paid off my student loans with that Kickstarter cash. :) Thanks!!
