I've seen snow in my friends' feeds from Portland Oregon to Nashville Tennessee, so while I know not all of you are in the Snow Zone, if you are I hope you got to spend some time at home cozied up with something to drink and something to read.

And if you're at home now, here's something to add to your snowy reading pile. (BYOB.)

WOW HOW DID I LOOK WHEN I GOT THERE??

I did NOT go out afterwards; I went home and read a book next to Fennel until I could tell when my tongue was flopping out.

Even though it has never hurt in my experience, the periodontist numbs up half of your face for this procedure. For those wondering, "this procedure" is scaling & planing - really deep cleaning, and smoothing of the teeth afterwards. I have periodontitis - gum disease - which just means my gums are detaching from my teeth (mostly in the back, in millimeter increments), which affects like 40% of all adults and isn't even really my fault; it's just something some people get. Expensive upkeep, but at least my teeth aren't falling out!

Pip has the cutest spite-purr.

(This has happened multiple times. Baby steps.)

Flat Earth Lane is a doozy, but EMOTIONAL TOUCH come ON who named it that.

Monday night Art Night is my favorite. It's my favoriter when it's snowing outside. (I wasn't going anywhere anyway.)

I've been doing these mindless exercises where I just fill a page with triangles in watercolor lately. I don't know where it's leading me but the best part is that it doesn't need to lead me anywhere at all.

It just feels good.

Luke lives in a two-room house that can't be more than 400 square feet. There's a clawfoot tub in the kitchen next to the fridge. The living/sleeping/music listening room has a little couch and soft lighting and carefully chosen artwork on the walls. Like all of our old homes in this town, the kitchen is blocked out with a curtain hanging in the doorway to keep the heat in just one room at a time. It's cozy as heck.

PIP ALSO LOVES THE TOOOOYYYYY (He blushes with his eyeballs.)

He and Fennel have so much more in common than he'd like to believe.

Let it be known that if you write a joke book for kids, those kids will remember all your dumb jokes for the rest of their lives.

Stay safe out there, my snowy friends!

Oh man, I've lived in "cold but not much snow" territory for too long...I'd completely forgotten about putting wipers up. (Our winters tend to be on the dry side, as are our summers, springs, and falls.)

Hah, I was at the dentist yesterday too. I had two crowns cemented on. I did decide to run errands with a half-numb face XD Which mostly consisted of geeking out over books at the local bookshop with the shopkeeper and then grabbing groceries.

Briana Morey

Would you consider selling the triangle thing?

Ken Carlile

I adore that painting! Also, my Olympia does that same wild howl with toys that she's killed. We call her Mighty Hunter. Lately, she's been digging into the box of empty boxes that we keep for Xmas presents and pulling out small pieces of bubble wrap and killing those.

Funny thing about the street names, I just started reading The Address Book: What Street Addresses Reveal About Identity, Race, Wealth, and Power by Deirdre Mask, and the introduction has some fascinating information about West Virginia's historic lack of street names and ongoing work to get them agreed to and added.

Luke

I didn’t get your 2:30 (tooth hurty) joke until just now 😬

Cat

It's ok, buddy, it takes me a minute too.

Cat

Oooo I'm checking this out

Deb with the purple bike

"Tooth hurty" needs to be an answer in a NYT crossword 😆 "Ideal dentist appointment timeslot, perhaps?"

Cat

I too have long wondered about Emotional Touch Way... Maybe someone's massage business is there and they decided to up the name recognition?

Cat

I also am really hoping that "Flat Earth" is tongue-in-cheek but where we are, who knows? Bolivar and HF have competing street names -- Zachary Taylor Street (HF) vs Taylor Street (Bolivar). Henry Clay St vs Clay St. How much petty was involved? Perhaps one day I'll find out.

dcorsetto

And here I am making you look like you don’t like *fine puns* when you really just didn’t like that my tooth hurtied!

dcorsetto

And I am borrowing it from you.

dcorsetto

I was making it to cut up and make little thank-you notes out of, so that I have some in a pinch, but I’m sure this is the beginning of a LOT of future colorful triangle paintings!

David Neale-Lorello

Tooth-hurty was when one of my best friends got her wisdom teeth out! Over 40 years ago now!!! Yes -- it never dies.

allanfranta

NO! No more book recommendations until I get caught up, already 7 books deep on the unread pile! We have a Noroad here. No street, lane or other designation, it does end in an interesting cul-de-sac, near a Buddhist temple and a Shooting range.

MaryAnne Glazar

Ah yes, the jokes we remember forever. Like "How do you keep an idiot in suspense?"

MaryAnne Glazar

Berkeley CA has a street named Martin Luther King Jr. Way. Makes for long street signs...

NJGR

DANIELLE. You know that there are now THREE of your newer dailies that I have to buy, right? Why do you do this to meeeeeeeeeeee? ;) (I actually like it.) -j

kaitou

There's a town in Colorado called No Name. Another Colorado town has streets named Frankie Lane, Lois Lane and Wagon Trail.

Dean Reilly

Either that or it's the local makeout spot! 😁

Ash

Tennessee checking in. We’ve got that Northern-style snow that is fun for two days, but lasts for a week.

Cat

Oh, Boston can't help but increase the pretention by going with Boulevard. At least Berkeley only did "Way"

Tim Pendergast

No idea what the square footage of my place is but it tends to be cold as hell despite being on the third floor so I have plastic sheeting separating the kitchen from the rest of the place. It's not very elegant but either am I. I used to take it down in the spring and put it back in the summer but I got tired of doing that about 10 years ago.

Tim Pendergast

As for road names I live on Onway Lake Rd, which I inevitably have to explain is not "on 'Way Lake Rd.'" As annoying as my childhood address of Cluff Rd which everybody heard as Cliff Rd.

Andy Ihnatko

Again I say: weird old homes, made before the mid-20th-century when the cookie-cutter layout of rooms and spaces got locked down, are the BEST. The stories make up for the inconveniences. "Oh, this room is always chilly in winter. The house was built in 1837 as a mercantile. Our den was originally a storeroom for dry goods and cheeses. When the first floor was converted into living space in 1910, they just put up some interior paneling and made a half-assed attempt at insulation."

Minzoku Bokumetsu

Sterling VA has Warp Drive (by the company's demands)

Minzoku Bokumetsu

So we have Lost Knife Road, which I'm SURE is a fun story

Steve Boyko

Faraway Lane is not far away from where we live. I really wanted to buy a house there.

Margreet de Heer

Ha ha ha I love how you draw Pip. Some cats are so transparant.

dcorsetto

(Your fault for buying them THE BEST toy, though!! Why is it the ONLY favorite?!)

Glenn Fitzpatrick

That’s my sort of joke 😂 So much so when my dentist called me just now I was excited when they asked if I can reschedule mine to 2:30, then was incredibly disappointed when they said “oh, wait, 2:40” 😭

NJGR

It IS a cute toy... 😁

kaitou

I was having gum issues, too. When I went in for my cleaning, the tech suggested I use Parodontax toothpaste. Seems to have improved things for me.

dcorsetto

I think they sent me home with that! I'll pay attention to if it helps any, thanks! And good gums vibes to you.

Rich

THIS! :-D
