Yesterday was Hourly Comic Day, but as you'll see in the last update here, I tweaked the rules to suit my schedule because I'm a 42 year old human being. So I'll have some hourlies to share with y'all later. :)

In the meantime...

Actually, Baley destroyed both of us. It probably didn't help that Ryan and I were too busy having our own feud after the sheep incident, but either way she slayed us. It was Baley's first win at Catan!!

Last Saturday was too beautiful out to stay indoors. So.

Burkittsville (with two "t"s - can I "sic" my own comic?) is the supposed location of the Blair Witch Project, although... well, you can read about it in the link. Most of the film was shot elsewhere. But locals know about Burkittsville because of it, and it's only about 25 minutes from us, so we decided to pop over for a tiny town visit. Other than a dry goods store and a closed post office, this was pretty much the whole town.

What I found amazing was that you could look around in any direction from the crest of the cemetery, and it was all just countryside. Even though I knew my (now fairly metropolitan) hometown of Frederick was due east of there, I couldn't really see it.

The first time I went to NYC, my first semester in college, I was dating a guy from Long Island and we went with his smartass friends who didn't like me. They were all a year older than me and gave me shit for looking up at the buildings "like a tourist." I spent the trip looking down and trying not to make eye contact with anyone.

The next time I went to New York, I'd broken up with that guy, and I looked anywhere I wanted. I think it was my second year in college. I was dating someone who loved me the way I was, who didn't seem to care about what kinds of jobs we ended up with in the future, and I felt more free than I ever did and probably ever will in my life.

(I'm not sad about that - the things that make me less free now are the consequences of all the things that I love and that fulfill me - but I'm glad that I had that flirtation with aimless curiosity for awhile.)

On a more whimsical note...

I swear to god if the technology that fuels ChatGPT and Midjourney isn't well on its way to improving dating apps so my friends can stop suffering through that shitshow, someone out there is doing something wrong.

The worst part is, I was looking at that basket full of original art below the window thinking "I should really move that."

I'm trying to channel Farel Dalrymple (on Patreon) with that CRASH sound effect. His sound effects are soooo satisfying.

IMO, Hourly Comic Day should be able to be completed the next day (or the day after that!). I'll be wrapping them up in the next day or two.

You may recall that I did the same thing with 24-Hour Comic Day, which is in October - I changed it to 48-Hour Comic Weekend a couple of years ago, so that I could still get in a good challenge, but also get some SLEEP. (I even went out for a drink with Ryan, as I recall.) A challenge is a challenge even if you tweak the universal rules; if you want to do one, you should fit it into your life in a way that makes sense for you.

I hope I get to do another 48-hour comic soon, but this October will mark the 20th anniversary of Girls With Slingshots (!!!) and I'd really like to plan something to celebrate it this year. I'll keep you posted either way, of course!

Back to belated hourly comics for me... have a nice weekend, pals. <3

Re 1/29, have you read "Cat Pictures Please", by Naomi Kritzer?

Patricia Rodriguez

I love that CRASH sound effect! It really made it sound like a big crash. ❤️ Ha! And the link for Blair Witch Project sent me down memory lane AND a rabbit hole about the franchise. 🤣 I hadn't thought of that movie in years! Looks like you had a great week. Thank you for these wonderful dailies and I look forward to your hourlies ❤️😁

Dan Berry

Love these, Danielle. And also, screw those rules, who cares?

Dirk Bergstrom

These daily comics are just so satisfying. Thank you.

Josh Smift

I came here to say that! It is *so good*. :^ ) There's also a couple of novels in the same universe, and that Clarkesworld page has a link to the podcast (narrated by the fabulous Kate Baker) if you like listening to your stories with your ears rather than your eyeballs.

Mads

My friends won't play Catan with me anymore. Last time we played, I ended up with the robber seven times in a row.

MaryAnne Glazar

You could do a comic about Hazel and Jaime 20 years later -- what are they up to now?

Deb with the purple bike

You don't actually have to hover-squat below your horizontal surface to use the Tay-Tay, do you?!? That one panel cracked me up so much! 😆 (I also prep my taxes by spreading out piles on the floor; second week in a row I feel so seen by these dailies!)

allanfranta

You hit the nail on the head with the AI one! Sadly, not one tech bro will step up to the challenge, wonder why? That last panel! *chef's kiss*

William Cole

Petition to put Danielle in charge of all AI policy!

Underpants and Overbites

Totally agree about making challenges work for you. I never really understood how Hourly Comics Day works without making half the comics about keeping up with making comics. Love the idea of 48 hour comics. I haven't pulled an all nighter in years. I think I'd have heartburn for a week!

Minzoku Bokumetsu

Was that Frederick, MARYLAND?! *now wants to see the squirrels*

Lisa

"the things that make me less free now are the consequences of all the things that I love and that fulfill me" -- This is such a helpful perspective! I need to remember that (and also use it as a yardstick to measure constraints by).

Tim Pendergast

With you on Hourly/24 Hour Comics. Arbitrary time limits on things are for when you are in your 20s.

Andy Ihnatko

UGH yes, Grownup Responsible Andy knows that the easiest way to manipulate me into taking preventative action right away is to assure me that when I _do_ knock that water bottle off the nightstand and it lands upside down on the laptop I've got leaning against the side of the bed, he's never ever ever going to stop reminding me that he warned me about Exactly That Thing and I didn't listen.

Boum

Gurl, I’ve been cheating on HCD for years. Every now and then I do the real thing but usually I chronicle my life for one day a few days before HCD, then I take one or two days extra to draw the whole thing and then on the day of I just peacefully post one every hour 😌 I have kids!! And we have work!! How else are we supposed to do this!!

dcorsetto

ESPECIALLY if you have kids!! Good for you for being smart about it all along!

dcorsetto

It is!! That’s where I grew up (specifically rural Ijamsville, just over the border from Montgomery County). Are you familiar with the area?

dcorsetto

Hah!! Naw, I was just being lazy and reaching up to my drawing board instead of standing up and writing like a normal human!

Minzoku Bokumetsu

I'm fairly local! We mostly go to Frederick for the one retro gaming store and comic store every so often (though we should explore some time)

Ursus Ridens

Yes, I know that there are other projects in train or lined up, but do it, please. Even though I loved the gloriously incomplete way you ended the strip -- I can hear McPedro's pot clicking down the street into the distance...I am literally frightened of what may have become of them, now that they're no longer young, hot, and able to make bad decisions without great cost -- Hazel's specialty. (But Jamieson and Maureen's kid is now twenty-something, so...)

Leslie Carter

Thanks for posting a photo of that cross-stitch! I have two my grandmother did back in the '30's (I imagine they were a "thing" to zone out on while enduring the Great Depression)!
